I'm an African-American woman. I'm only 7 months into being a realtor, and already, I'm making lots of interesting observations. My goal was to enter the luxury market. How soon did I realize the luxury market, monopolized by Sotheby's, Compass, Christies, and a few others are dominated by much older white realtors. If you were to visit their staff pages online, then you will see that there are hardly any younger people of color on their payroll. This doesn't give realtors of color an opportunity to sell luxury or much of anything to strive for in the future as they gain more experience. In addition, when you first join any brokerage, the first thing you'll be told is to contact your "sphere of influence" (family and friends) for prospects. A lot of African-Americans, unfortunately, aren't in the position to afford homes and they're uninformed about the whole homebuying process. And even within the black community, there is distrust and blatant discrimination against realtors of color. Everyone, including black people, seem to have in their mind a "profile" of what they believe to be a competent realtor. It's usually the image of white person that is believed to be more "capable" and "professional". I've had a family member hire a white male realtor, instead of me, because this family member didn't feel confident that I'd know what I was doing. Lastly, another barrier to new realtors gaining work experience is the Realtor - Mortgage Lender relationship. A lot of realtors and mortgage lenders are close and they give each other prospects all the time. This is how it works. As soon as a borrower gets pre-approved to purchase a home, the borrower is "assigned" by the lender to his favorite realtor, who is usually a veteran agent. This keeps borrowers from looking for realtors, on their own. Borrowers, completely unaware of the lender and realtor is working together, simply accepts the realtor they're given, instead of insisting they'll choose a realtor on their own. So new agents are completely left out of the equation. This actually happened when I sent a prospective buyer to get pre-approved by a lender. Instead of returning to me to sign a buyer's representation agreement, my prospect was convinced by her lender to go with the realtor that HE wanted for her, a white male. It's WICKED and SLEEZY. The lender basically "stole" my prospect and gave her to his realtor friend. The both of these guys then laughed all the way to the bank, because of the ignorance of my prospect. NEW AGENTS WATCH OUT FOR THIS. Do not send your prospect out into the real estate wilderness. Be sure that you have a conversation with everyone involved so that there is a clear understanding.

Did you go through the pre license review chapter or just kinda skim it. It’s super long and covers the main points of the chapters before the unit test

I chose Real Estate Express. Found material and course structure very confusing and wording difficult to understand. I have had to Google and use other resources for clarification (which is really disappointing after paying for their Plus package!) Using free Real Estate U courses has helped - they provide infographics, real world examples, straightforward wording and audio material. Just posting because I wish I would have considered learning styles and looked at its reviews for Real Estate Express before purchasing!

How did you study for the Real Estate Express Final exam? Was it the same questions from all the quizzes from each chapter?

Hi I have a question. Did you still take a grand final exam at the end of all the courses? I was kinda confused on how you actually receive your license. I know you said you have to pay for a proctor per section and once you finish all of those you were able to print out your certificate. But was there a final exam still or did the test for each section make up for the final exam?

so you get your licenses thru the course or you have to register your certificate of completion so you can take the state test ????

If you can stare at text for hours and remember what you read, this will work for you. If that's not the way you learn, stay away. It's all reading a monotonous. Plus they word things tricky to fool you, and its tough if you don't learn that way.
