I want to try more Garrison Brothers to see if their other stuff is better than the Boot Flask, which I couldn't stand. But their whisky is so expensive I'll probably never be able to afford it. Oh well, there's plenty of good whisky that I can afford. 🙂

Another good review. Like the proof, hate the price. Typically, honey finished offerings are cloying and candy like, still remnicent of those "honeyed" ones the big brands keep pushing. This seems to not be the case. Good for them. Perhaps on day I can taste for my self.

I’m not a fan of some their core bottles. The Double Rye and Bourbon did not impress me. However, the cask strength and finished barrels are very nice.

1:05 I'd never even heard of Latitudes until now, but even if I had, I'd not visit. I've only driven over to that part of town twice in the past 10 years or so, and I won't again. I'm only 64, but the older I get the harder it is for me to drive on roads I don't know, or in heavy traffic. So I stay up here in the Heights. 😢 I've been resisting the Glen hats, even though they're free, because I haven't contributed to the support of the channel. But I think I might yield to temptation. 🙂

Great review, I really enjoy New Riff and it is something we need to check out! I definitely think it's the economy. Whiskey is still going strong and the market is getting flooded, that's for sure!

All those rum referances and dark sugar-ness leads me to think LA cane sugar. May be involved. Rum was a staple on those cane plantations before those Frenchmen ever even heard of bourbons . Good review.

I'm not used to barley whisky providing spicy notes. Fruit, yes, but not spice. It sounds very interesting.

Awesome review! Almost picked one of these up last month but passed. Price point is tough for something that's out of the ordinary/new for a distillery. Balcones red wax Single Malt (the gold standard imo) has increased in price here in Texas ranging from 65 to 80 bucks so maybe they're not that far off. I'll probably continue to pass until I can try some at the local watering hole. Also, the Glen toppers definitely are special. Used one of my WhiskeyOne toppers at the pool today to keep the bugs out and the flavor in!

I've not heard of the Labybird from GB. Thanks for mentioning it. We aren't chasing anything specifically this year. We are choosing a lot from independent bottlers this year though. We've picked up 8 or so from SMWS so far.

It's the Deep South, and if the Meleck operation is in southern Louisiana (I've not checked) they're aging their whisky in a *very* hot and humid climate. 3:28 @SLBDrinks is one of my favorite whisky channels. It's a father and son up in Indiana, I disremember where, but I believe they're in the northern part of the state. I've never had rum cake, but I love chantilly cake, which has all sorts of berries in it. 6:36 You might like the Knob Creek store pick that Kelly Liquors has done. I'm on my third bottle now - I've gotten them all from the Mountain Run store - and it's *delicious.* It's 120 proof, and it's only $56.99. I don't know whether they have any left, but they had six or eight bottles on the shelf last week when I got the current bottle. 8:59 Same here. I like to drink whiskey, not whisky and water. 🙂

I have one of the barrel select cask strengths that they released in Texas. I ran into Mia from JT Meleck at the Dallas Whiskey Riot and tried their standard whiskey and was impressed. When they dropped the cask strengths in Dallas, i snatched one up and love it. It’s such a distinct flavor and I just love it. Great unique flavors.

Great review! I've recently delved into tequilas from the bourbon side. You should review more tequilas, especially the anejo's.

I finally broke down, a couple or three weeks ago, and returned to Facebook after several years away specifically to join two groups - Randy Sullivan's Bourbon Real Talk Community, and the Cult of Balcones. I applied to join the CoB, and nothing happened. So I tried again, and now I can't even find the group - apparently they blocked me. I answered the questions, so I know that's not it. I hate to ask a favor, but if you could let someone from the CoB know that I'm a real person and love Balcones Distilling, I'd really appreciate it. 🙂

Like it, but if they source their bourbon from several places, where does the limestone water from north of NYC fit into the final product. It seems to me that water would be used at the beginning of the production not after sourced whiskey is shipped to Brooklyn. Maybe stupid question, but wondering

Good to see you again, Israel. 🙂 As you know, I'm a Balcones fan. But it breaks my 💔 heart that they're discontinuing the Texas Pot Still Bourbon. That's good juice, and the cheapest bottle they have. 2:41 I wouldn't call what makes Balcones whisky distinctive a "funk." That term implies something bizarre or unpleasant, and it's neither of those things. I call it "the Balcones touch," and it's why their juice isn't part of the crowd. 🙂 If I was on Facebook still I'd go hunt up the CoB group, but... 🥃 I'd start my own version (with a different name, so as not to steal y'all's 🙂) on MeWe, but I've found that so few people in the whiskey groups I'm in like Balcones Distilling that it wouldn't be feasible. 11:27 Oh, I gotta answer that! 😀 I started drinking whiskey in September of 2021, and since I'm a Texan 🤠 I wanted to try every Texas whisky I could. In December of 2021 I got a bottle of the Texas Pot Still Bourbon, and it was *GORGEOUS.* It was my favorite whiskey from the first sip. I've also found the Baby Blue and the Lineage delicious, and so was the one bottle of True Blue I've had. The only thing from Balcones I've had that I didn't love was the 100 proof rye - and that I couldn't stand (I might like it now, but I'm afraid to try it again, it was so awful). It occurs to me that from what I've heard, and from my limited experience, most Texas distillers are trying to moderate the aspects that are unique to Texas, and produce stuff that resembles Kentucky juice (e.g. Still Austin's Musician or Firestone & Robertson's TX bourbon). But Balcones isn't trying to be anything besides Texas. We say that everything's bigger in Texas, and the folks at Balcones don't apologize for that Texas confidence. They have the same attitude that lies behind the saying, "One riot, one Ranger." ⭐ 40:42 When I posted a picture of my True Blue on MeWe, it was so dark that someone claimed that Balcones had added color. But it was a straight whisky, so that wasn't the case. It's just that two years or more in the Waco climate, even in used or uncharred barrels, imparts a ton more color and flavor than you get in Kentucky or Tennessee. 53:59 I'm a Southern boy, so to me Miz Brenna is perfectly normal. It's how we show familiar respect to someone who we know well enough that we don't say Mrs./Ms. X, but not well enough to just use the first name. 🙂 1:01:06 Balcones was the first legal distillery in Texas after Prohibition. Garrison Brothers was the first legal *bourbon* distillery in Texas after Prohibition. Balcones beat Garrison Brothers by a year or so, but it was with barley whisky, not bourbon. 🙂
