Building cars, mostly from the couch, with use of 3D scanning, Fusion360, and some bloody knuckles sprinkled in.
Currently building a 2016 BMW i8 with a 13B-REW mated to a VAG 7 speed DQ500 DSG while retaining full hybrid functionality...or at least that's the plan.
Follow along as I overcomplicate a complicated BMW and nerd out on making it all work together.

It won't replace everything a 3d scanner can do, but you can get quite far with a flatbed scanner and a contour gauge. Better than a 3d scanner for many things, like that coil bracket. Also dirt cheap.
Very interesting. Well done
Wow. I was not expecting to find someone doing almost exactly what I wanted to do for my build!!!! Awesome!!!!!
I really liked your use of the magnetic markers. How thick are the magnetic markers you used? I have been looking for 10mm x 1mm black coated magnets but haven't had any luck finding them (Amazon used to carry them). I imagine a thicker magnet (2mm) would leave artifacts you'd have to post process. Would the edge of a 1mm thk silver magnet interfere with the scan? Really interesting videos -
I think you would be fine with the silver edges.
@@CouchBuilt Thank you
I've been watching from afar, this is some amazing stuff and I'm looking forward to seeing more. Best wishes!
This is really inspiring! Do you have any resources you would point to someone to learn the fundamentals needed to tackle a project like this?
Felicidades
I am looking at purchasing an Einstar and wondered what the specs of your PC was to help me gauge what I would need to have a good user experience. Thanks .
I’ve been running a 2020 Asus G14 with 40gb RAM and an RTX2060. It’s done well enough for all my needs but I’ve got an Asus Proart P16 enroute with 64GB and an RTX4070. It’ll be interesting to compare the two.
Can you make me a full custom exhaust?
Awesome project! I dream of building things like this!
Thanks!
This is freaking Awesome! I dream of building things like this but I think I have too much ADD to do it! Great Video!
where did you get those spring loaded connectors?
Can you upload your own designs to the canchecked screen? Would be sick to get a designer to make the gauges match the i8 stock gauges to keep the same vibe.
Yup, that’s one of the reasons I chose that option. You can create fully custom screens that’s the plan to match the general feel of the stock cluster.
Subscribed so I don't miss the programming half of it
I salute you for this level of craftsmanship-absolutely outstanding work! I do some things myself in this field, but I'm not on your level... yet.
it´s cold outside... lets make a coldstart an race the first 50m like a moron. NICE
Car was driven all morning. Outside temp is independent of engine fluid temps. I know, thermodynamics are a tough subject.
Amazing… Speechless! I learn more about my trade then any books out there (car locksmith) Can I ask what books you have in your library!
The future is now old man
This is the best possible way to handle the "modern cars are too difficult to work on because of all the electronics" gripe. Dive in and swim, make something awesome!
Awesome build but I'm worried about the longevity of the PCB due to it being sandwiched between the rack and the steering mount like in 32:05. Wouldn't it be better to use some sort of metal spacers? As it stands I feel like this could lead to some wheel wobble over time.
I haven't gone down the rabbit hole of designing my own PCB as yet, but you have shown it is approachable. Thanks.
Excellent and inspirational as always! I have a question about the CAN bus connections. I assume you’re converting wheel button CAN bus signals to LIN bus using the reverse engineering you did earlier for the IDs and bytes. Will you need to reverse engineer the CAN bus button signal IDs, or will the wheel manufacturer provide them to you? I also assume you’re connecting to the car’s CAN bus for tach, speed, and other analog sensor data you want to display on the wheel and digital display. Will you be working with multiple CAN buses? If not, are you concerned that the wheel switches might-however remotely-have an ID that conflicts with the BMW’s existing CAN bus IDs? I’m also curious to see how you’ll program the display to map the CAN bus signals of interest. Lastly, is programming the microcontroller similar to Arduino code, or is it something different? Thanks for your videos and for sharing your knowledge!
Very nice!
Love this video and this subject matter!! Thanks for uploading your journey.
Amazing information and very nice way of showing your subject. Great video! Subscribed!
Where I can buy the conector of the quick release?
It’s part of Zestek’s quick release hub. Not sure if they’re getting them molded or it’s an off the shelf part. Pogo pin connector is what you want to search for.
Brilliant work! It may have already been said but a rubber grommet on the wire pass through hole would prevent the carbon fibre from possibly wearing and shorting the wires, doesn't look like it should move but nvh and all that jazz! 😂
Jon for transport secretary.
Hey stranger
Amazing.... Ive always wondered what modding cars in the future is gonna look like and now is on this you tube channel. Thanks for the video
Insane how much knowledge you have just to make the steering wheel work. The screen tied in perfectly with the aesthetic of the wheel, it looks so sick!
Amazing! That was great to watch!
Thanks!
Much appreciated!
Fantastic job. Great explanations and nice humor too. Love this project
"rapid, unscheduled disassembly"
The content and detail you go into in these videos is fantastic, thanks for sharing
Man you have been truly blessed with some talents! Amazing work dude.
"obscuring the turn signals, bmw, doesn't matter" LOL, Gold.
are the high temperature resistant steering wheel parts for how fire the driving is gonna be? also good joke about hiding the dash lights
phenomenal , cant wait to get to get to this stage on my build , top video thanks!
Gosh does that steering wheel looks great! I'm really impressed. Any reason you're using KiCAD over the integrated Fusion360 EDA (Eagle), other than the price? I'm really looking forware the upcoming software focused video. Thanks for sharing
I tried Eagle for a bit because I liked the fact that it did have integration with F360. I found it to be unintuitive hot garbage with an awful library management system. I picked up on Kicad instantly and it hasn’t given me reason to look back.
Я в ахуе. Я не могу понять когда мне понадобилась вышка чтобы смотреть видосы про машины
I'm speachless, great video as always with immense learning value. You show great experience and expertise and its great following along seeing how you tackle these seemingly impossible tasks, many shy away from messing with the cars electronics but you show that it not only is possible but that results are amazing.
If you need someone to get you some bmw data hit me up

What was the cost of such a part when printed with Craft Cloud?
I have an Einstar and I love it. I reverse engineer parts for classic cars. This is next on my list. I'm in CT as well. :) Can i use a turn table with the Vega?
Looks properly mad, i love it. How much space do you have for an exhaust manifold with the axle there?
Just watched another of your videos, that is a tight fit! Are you worried about the heat affecting the axle at all over time?
more amazing content.
