Building cars, mostly from the couch, with use of 3D scanning, Fusion360, and some bloody knuckles sprinkled in.
Currently building a 2016 BMW i8 with a 13B-REW mated to a VAG 7 speed DQ500 DSG while retaining full hybrid functionality...or at least that's the plan.
Follow along as I overcomplicate a complicated BMW and nerd out on making it all work together.

In this episode we look at the Shining 3D Einstar scanner and the projects that Ive used it for over the past year. I also go over some general thoughts, tips and tricks that I’ve learned over that year to improve your scanning experience. The case is not something the Einstar comes with, but a Pelican case purchased cheap off Marketplace. Harbor Freight has some comparably sized options at a d...

Budget rotary, in this economy? Building a 13B Rotary i8: EP 2
Переглядів 4,3 тис.5 місяців тому
Lets take a look at what a $957 of "for parts only" 13B had inside. Buying a used rotary with an unknown history is generally ill-advised, but in this case it seems to have worked out.

Bad ass!!!
Those are some nice welds.
Keep this up, rising star in a flooded YT genre, you have a great unique approach/presence and an awesome project. 🙌
I'm here again and all for it!!! Don't be surprised if i show up at your door with a R-Title I8 I will supply the wide body from EDO Motorsport!!! not kidding btw!!! love the project!!
The magnets are an excellent tip!
Absolutly love this build, all the details and design process that you go across is amazing and inspiring really, the exhaust and intake looks awsome, keep working hard!
This is absolute GOLD . Ive very much wondered how you draw this kinda thing up from a scan. Thankyou so much for sharing .
Je kop staat scheef
Fantastic work, man! I'm picking up so many good tips/ideas from your build. Thanks for sharing!
Man, a 13b i8..that should be fun. I always wanted to put a k24 turbo in one
Quite normal that the dowel pin holes on the scan might display slightly different diameters, the actual common value of which you can just set on the sketch from a reference or part spec search. How best however to establish each one's actual center, without worrying about a scan error of the order of the shown scanned diameter differences, if a trans is not at hand to check, for example, by superimposing a print of the sketch? Thanks, and great explanation of procedure to follow.
I love it ❤. Looking forward to each new video. Much appreciation from Germany
Quality exploitation and showing
Yesss🎉
New to the project. I'm curious about the high rpm of 13B and the dq500s internal oli pump and possibly other parts not meant to rev that high What is the plan/thoughts?
It’s a turbo motor, so it doesn’t need to rev to 10k. Based on the 8374 dynos I’ve seen, it should be good to shift around 7500.
I watched the video twice 😊
Thanks for double dipping!
Easily one of my favorite channels for this year. Thanks for taking us along on a cool project.
One good channel with a project to another 👍👍👌👌
an LS fitting in the subframe lmao…truly no limits to where you can stuff that thing 😹😹😹
Transmission for the LS is a bit more challenging, but I’ll do a video on alternative swaps in the future.
Check out a transverse LS4/4T80E combo :) It's not a direct bolt on as you have to do some clearancing, but it is solid and had been shown to handle 800hp in FWD W-bodies.
Have a 3D scan to share by chance?
This is gonna be awesome, the i8 always deserved this kind of treatment
Great series! I love this project. 👍🏽👍🏽
Cool build and I can't wait to see more. Be careful with attaching carbon directly to aluminum because there could be a galvanic reaction that will cause the aluminum to corrode.
Good observation. There should be the slightest air gap from adhesive, but time will tell if it’s enough.
Best part of my day.
Ah love the content! Keep it coming!
Nice little atlas lathe, love those old things
Love seeing the build come together!
Also the most underrated series on YT!

The Facebook marketplace and eBay searching “ searching only to find used up parts for top dollar” 😅😂 I felt that shit😂 that shit was 😂wayyy too accurate and the comment I’m just a dude in a garage trying to make some cool shit 😂I like this guy
this is legit so cool
Some ceramic high temp powder coating to finish this manifold would be premium. Like the Rob Dahm 4rotor
9:15 Maybe even some UV lights? Provided you use fluids that react to UV light (some Castrol oils have a UV dye in them from the factory, for instance)
That rear hatch looks almost OEM!
Putting in the comment for the algorhytim because you deserve to be seen more on UA-cam! Great Engineering and wrenching especially with the project you're undertaking.
Your project is very interesting. I'm thinking about doing something similar. It's possible to shere model of subframe? Or same sachets of it?
Love the rotary swap everything shirt at lime rock
I've looked at those quick release buttons time and time before. Just didn't know if I would trust them for my bumpers. Now you've used them would you reccommend the ebay specials for bumpers and hoods? Love the vids, cheers from the Netherlands
I’m not sure I’d trust a hood or bumper to these real cheap ones. They would probably be fine, but I’d want something from a reputable manufacturer.
Did you think of using tempered glass instead of polycarbonate? Whyd you choose polycarb?
Any link to the split style "brass threaded inserts"?
McMaster Carr sells ‘em under pn 94510A340 or 94510A255 for M6 and depending what side you’re inserting the fastener.
good stuff
Awesome job!
Only thing missing is a video on your CAD process. I know you said there's educational vids on other platforms. But I'm interested in the whole process. Maybe you can make more videos on the whole process in detail?
My next video will have more DIY details on working with a scan to crate solid models. This one didn’t lend itself well to a broadly digestible lesson. The parts here were done mostly with the sheet metal tools. HP Academy does have some really well presented lessons on that topic, which you can find kinda for in the description.
Super cool engine cover! Maintenance lights would be nice, but to be honest I think they need to be display lights too. When you are done with this it will be a work of art. Besides, that little 3 cylinder deserves a spotlight for its last send off. (: They’re not quick release and I don’t think they would fit your aesthetic but if they are not on your radar already PIKA screws are really cool, I’m excited to use them on a similar more permanent cover project. Can't wait for the next video!
The great thing about 3d scanning and building off the car is the car is not down for months.
I plan on the actual swap only taking about two weeks. The pre-work, more than a year.
@@CouchBuilt this could be a game changer for custome building. You dont need the car down for a year, you scan, fab, scan, double check in the computer. Then build in a couple of weeks. This is geniuos.
Nice progress. Is it heavier than the stock cover?
I had to weigh it after you asked. It’s 2lbs heavier.
@@CouchBuilt Thank You for taking time to read my comment, weighting the cover and answering. 👍👍👏👏
you’re so good at this, taking notes from superfastmatt but I like your detail. thanks for sharing
Thanks! Definitely a fan of Matt’s presentation style. Just far less ham sandwich content here.
@@CouchBuilt we're going to need you to ham it up a bit... At least half a sandwich worth. Lol
If you find yourself 3D printing large multi-part items like that in the future that you do want some rigidity from, an easy trick is to design some peg holes and use nails you cut the head off of or any other similar sort of rod or wire. Strengthens and helps index as well. Excited as always to see the next video!
This project really gets me excited, I've always looked at the i8 and questioned what are the possibilities for a better engine Greetings from SA🇿🇦
I just wanna say thank you for everything
