EFFICIENT Editing In Unity With Expansions
Ah... EditorPrefs, another black magic in my arsenal. Thank you, master
Oh EditorPrefs are super useful
The only thing that could make it better is if it had a button like the Undo history. Its amazing either way. Thanks for the tutorial.
That would be a nice edition.
You deserve a ton more subscribers! Great video, I learned a lot and I'm actually exited to create some Tools myself (if only I had some ideas yet :D). I've heard in the recent @Jason Weimann podcast you were participating in, that you have created a debugger script/tool to automate the process of validating changes instead of playing through the levels yourself. That sounded super interesting and when I heard it, I thought to myself "I need that, and I need it NOW!!!" :D That would help a ton in my current project, so any plans on showing us the magic on how you build that tool? And if not, how much do I have to pay you to show me? :P
I am glad you liked the video and enjoyed watching the podcast. I believe I spoke about two concepts; validating and debugging your games. In regards to the first validating your game before playing and build there are several videos on this channel, here are a few Required Attribute ua-cam.com/video/BN6NXMHJ8v0/v-deo.html Scene Validation ua-cam.com/video/fnMLyUk1TlA/v-deo.html Validate Builds ua-cam.com/video/fnMLyUk1TlA/v-deo.html As for the all power Game Debugger that is more concept than solid piece of code, it resolves around writing your game in such a way that you expose actions you perform as the player (like pulling a switch) and then having a window in the editor that lists them all and enables you to use them from anywhere; also in regards certain game types the ability to teleport to locations. Pro tip add routines, like teleport and give me that key and then have that pop up in the debugger as an option, so you can teleport to the location of a door with a key you would pick up elsewhere in the level. The Game Debugger is planned on being one of the early dev logs in the upcoming series for my new game.
You are doing great!!! keep it up...! Thanks for the excellent explanation :)
Thanks, glad you liked it.
is there any way to detect when a file is dragged over the window? before the file is dropped
Check out this video on drag and drop ua-cam.com/video/FpOAcfULmTE/v-deo.html
@@WarpedImagination well that wasnt really what i was looking for. what i meant was related to this tutorial, this script has the funcionality to detect dropped files, but doesnt detect when files are being dragged over the application. i need it to work on runtime so thats kind of why drag and drop cant be used since its a editor script
@@slowkit Sorry I have made so many of these I forgot it was runtime So the window wrapped only checks for the WM_DROPFILES parameter and there isn't a WM_DRAGFILES alternative to check for. You could run through the other parameters to see if one would suit your need and alter the Callback method
@@WarpedImagination yeah i kind of tried to look for one but there wasnt anything that could be useful i think, anyways its okay
Excellent!
Glad you liked it!
another great video, a small addition would be maybe adding if(SelectionHistoyToolSettings.SetSceneView) SceneView.lastActiveSceneView.FrameSelected(); in the SelectPrevious() and SelectNext()
That would make a good preference option thanks for bringing it up
Impressive of what you can actually do with the Unity Editor. I always feel lost when trying to create something for the Unity Editor. It became easier with UIToolkit though. Anyway, I love your content! There are very few UA-camrs who are actual experts in topics like Unity Editor / Advanced Scripting IMO!!
Glad you are liking the content .. I really need to do more videos with UIToolkit
WindyBeard?
Ok you lost me whats the question?
Because it's good, and my arms are too short to reach the "stop" button 😂 ... So what happens if you you hit back a few times and then select something that was not next in the history stack ? I'm assuming it removes everything after it in the stack ? It would be cool if there is a way to "insert" steps in between the history..
Yep it clears the stack like with browsers. I thought about the insertion idea but it felt off to then make four or five selections press next and get something from 8 selections ago.. I agree though there might be a nice middle ground maybe after 2 selections it clears .. something to play with maybe
Always loved your editor tutorial, unity need morw this kind of tutorial, anyway if you don't mind, i have request if you you show how to make button attribute, this like kind of basic but unity not provide out of the box, i know they have context menu item, it's just I'm prefer if can be simplified as button can be clicked in editor inspector
Just to make sure I understand correctly you're looking for an attribute you can stick above a method in your class that shows up a button in the inspector that runs said method?
@@WarpedImagination yes, that the one
ok good to know .. I should probably do a tutorial on buttons and all the places you can insert them.
@@WarpedImagination yeaa, thank you
I still don’t understand why you don’t have at least 10k+ subscribers. UA-cam algorithm, do your thing.
Kind of you to say. I am terrible at self promotion and probably doing something wrong.
@@WarpedImagination Well +1 sub today. Seems like the world has gone crazy and good content just doesn't get elevated any more for whatever reason.
@@indieguy7297 Thank you
@@WarpedImagination nah, your time will come. bet on that.
Fomo is real, gotta make sure I'm not missing any last minute nuggets... + already wishlisted + all of them. Also, looking forward to your devlogs too.
I am often conflicted how to finish these videos First devlog will be this month, I have been pushing it back too long.
@@WarpedImagination I really hope they are worth their time-weight in wishlists for you! I would have a very hard time breaking off the time for a devlog when I could be making the game. Though, marketing is stupidly important. 🍀
I like to give back to the community with these videos and as you say it seems a good way to get the game out there in front of people for wishlisting and of course feedback.
Fantastic! Thanks.
You're welcome!
Unity team doesn't expose so much stuff that should be hacked by looking into source could and using reflection. I'm not speaking about sheer variety internal calls to c++ part. That's so annoying after Unreal' open soreness (if there is such a word)
Agreed
Was gonna say that there are similar free tools, why'd you pay for this one and marketing it.. then I realised you made it 😄
Yeah I could be clearer that it was mine
Wow, I didn't know your tool had such a good user experience
Its thanks to the back and forth with the community
Nice breakdown - a lighting video might be interesting
Noted!
I just picked it up, really great tool! A few thoughts on usability: I would love a window that shows all bookmark assets to centralize global scene navigation. I would also love a temporary bookmark wherever the scene camera was positioned before moving to a bookmark. This would allow you to get back to where you were, if you wanted to quickly check how something looks and swap back without having to create a bookmark, or simply getting back to where you were because you accidentally pressed B. I believe that if you move the camera after pressing B, when you press B again, it should go to the bookmark that you last went to instead of the next on the list. Imagine going to a bookmark, moving the camera while moving objects around, then wanting to go back to that bookmark. I know the alt+b menu is an option, but a simple press of B to go back to your bookmark would be really nice. I understand if these features are out of scope of the asset, I may end up adding them myself if I decide them to be crucial. Regardless, great tool, I'm off to rate it now!
Glad you liked the tool and thanks for rating it, that really helps with its visibility. I was actually planning to do a sprint soon on feature requests on this tool so I will add these to my notes .. they are all good ideas and I agree with the going to the last bookmark I put that one on myself a couple of weeks back.
@@WarpedImagination I think it would be useful if there was a shortcut to go to the nearest bookmark to the current scene view. Also being able to mark a bookmark as the scene default and have a setting to go to that whenever you open the scene (similar to how you press B in this video to go to the overview bookmark).
@@legendlazy sounds good I have added those to my feature list with the requests from the people who left reviews.
Great video. I would love to see a deep dive on how you approach occlusion culling!
Glad you liked the video .. Occlusion Culling and Lighting is definitely going to get their own dev log episodes
@@WarpedImagination Looking forward to it!
Is there a difference between your tool on the asset store and the tutorials? Does the asset store version have any extra features or something of that nature?
You should be able to build the tool from the videos you see on the channel starting with the one in the description .. its not a step by step guide to get the exact tool in the store but from other videos and what you see here you could piece it together over time
awesome... must have tool!
Glad you liked it
You made a great case for picking it up, so I did. And yesterday I spent $100+ in assets through your link. I got some great new tools to play with. 😊
Gotta feed that asset habit
Pretty well thought out tool!
Thanks I am glad you think so .. I use it day in day out
Noice!! 🎉
Glad you liked it .. it was nice to be included in the dev day sale.
my projects does not load properly with VS 2022. I previously edited them with vscode... should I delete some dirty? bad files?
Check Preferences > External Tools > External Script Editor is set correctly
Your content is brilliant but what I can't grasp is why all youtubers at some point tend to add pic with themselves to the video. What's the point?
Glad you are enjoying the content There is a prevailing wind that appearing in your videos creates a recognizable and memorable presence, associating the face with the content in the channel .. which I understand, I might not be overly comfortable with it but I get it. However it wont happen a lot on this channel, because it is so much more effort to set up, film and edit .. and I have a face made for radio and an attitude problem.
@@WarpedImagination thank You for the frank reply. Btw Your face would fit any TV show :)
You're too kind .. at one point I thought of using a scan of my head rigged with blend shapes and using a tool to move my lips along with the script.
@@WarpedImagination oh, common. You looks great. No need to use any artificial substitutions. But anyway please continue to make content. I'm 10yrs exp dev and still get insights from Your videos
Thank you for the high quality video. It is nice to see in use some assets I have purchased, like HD Retro House and the Moster Full Pack Vol 1. They are very good assets. Sadly, my PC is short on disk space and processor, so it is hard to use the 5GB house and the 1GB monsters.
Glad you liked the video .. assets just seem to get bigger and bigger
Excellent video that goes way above and beyond just simple recommendations! I found it extremely useful how you demonstrated each asset in your own project as it made it a lot easier to envision how an asset could be used in production instead of just seeing the asset's examples from the store. Also I would love to see videos on the mixed lighting and audio.
Glad it was helpful .. I will put another vote in for a video on mixed lighting
And I thought you always procrastinate by extending the Unity Editor to death.
Got to dog food my own creations and though I started in the industry as a tools dev 20 odd years ago I do love developing the gameplay as well.
Thanks for choosing our content to implement in your game project! :)
Thanks for making such amazing creatures .. I will reach out soon to chat about them
@@WarpedImagination Sounds good! feel free to reach out.
great video, as always! :) Please do a video about mixed lighting.
There will definitely be a dev log episode devoted to mixed lighting .. it is a super fun topic that can make all the difference.
Good job!

Fantastic video, great selection to highlight. Thanks very much. I'm always happy to see Unity content that dives deeper than the basics. One of my recent favorites on the asset store is HotReload. Once I figured out how to really capitalize on it's time savings, it's been a gigantic quality of life improvement for anything needing rapid code tweaking to get just right. It has a generous free option for Unity Personal users, too.
Glad you enjoyed the video and my selection. Another developer was ranting and raving about Hot Reload to me a few days ago .. I will have to give it a go.
How did you not mention any of your own assets? Scene selection and audio previewer being a must for every project.
First off glad you like my assets .. thank you. I wanted to promote others in this video and the Dev Days event (and I am terrible at self promotion). The Scene View Bookmarks tool is on sale as well .. I pinned it as a comment

@@WarpedImagination It does certainly puts a handsome face behind a nice voice and awesome content! ❤
You're too kind
Cool! I had seen custom stuff for the Inspector but not like this.
Glad you liked it, you'll find lots of editor extensions on this channel
This is another very helpful tutorial, thanks!! I had to modify two things to fix some bugs: On 'EditorUpdate', I added a check to HasOpenInstances. Indeed, GetWindow will return an EditorWindow even if it's not existing. This has the annoying behavior of forcing open a hierarchy window when we start a standalone profiler. HasOpenInstances does not accept type as an argument, so we can copy the behavior of the function from the Unity source code: public static bool HasOpenInstances(Type windowType) { UnityEngine.Object[] wins = Resources.FindObjectsOfTypeAll(windowType); return wins != null && wins.Length > 0; } On CustomGUI, I added a check for null before component.GetType. The component can be null if we have a missing script.
Great additions thanks for bringing them up
Your videos are kick ass awesome! Quick to the point and very good tips and tricks! Keep up the good work!
Thanks glad you are enjoying the content.
omg so handy. Toggling gameobjects on/off should have this by default and even a keyboard shortcut. Just pressing Q or some easy accessible key would be even better. Great tutorial, many thanks! Can you implement a keypress shortcut into this script aswell, would that be simple or more complex?
Glad you liked the video .. the default shortcut is Alt + Shift + A to toggle on and off game objects
@@WarpedImagination oh it is, damn I missed that one. Thanks for sharing
I'm using unity for years and I never had the idea or will to upgrade the different standard windows. You just unlocked a new option in my head!
Glad you liked it .. plenty more tweaks to the standard windows coming up
maybe it should be a free asset on the Asset Store
I would want to round it out a little more with a couple of extra features
FANCY! Another Unity YT channel, git-amend, mentioned you in their last video. You guys should make a collab or something
I have been really enjoying the content that git-amend is putting out .. I recommended him a while ago on the game dev show as a good channel to up your skillset. I haven't caught the latest video of his I will have to check it out
Well, I come from a design background where I use ctrl + 2 shortcut for locking objects, so I made it as shortcut for toggling on/off gameobjects.
I use the Alt+Shift+A myself most of the time
The basic unity windows like hierarchy and project were improved so little over the years...
The API for them is fairly limited as well .. leading to some less than ideal hacks
This should be included default layout.
Yeah probably an option to be able to turn on
Still watch your videos, even though I didn't touch Unity since....
I have some general gameplay and tools videos planned with a dev log series starting up very soon
@@WarpedImagination ohh looking forward to it now :)
