    as someone who got hired at 19 as a product designer and had major imposter syndrome over the years (I'm 26 now), this video has helped a ton. I never knew what people look for on a portfolio since I didn't get hired the traditional way (I was a junior software engineer from a bootcamp but transitioned to design). I didn't want to spend my entire career at once place and never knew where to start. This has helped a ton as I'm afraid to ask people I work with since the company I work for is known to get rid of people the second they mention other options and the only friends I have in this industry are my coworkers.

    Hi @lifeatmiro ! Thank you for the video and the product you build. I have been working in IT for 15+ years. I've made the path of SWE -> Sr. SWE -> Entrepreneur -> Tech lead/Team lead -> Delivery Manager. It was laid through companies of different sizes. Now I work for one of the biggest European tech. But still, I have the following questions about the EM role: 1. Could you pls explain the "Why" behind having the EM role in the company? What is the real need for it? 2. It was a long explanation of the role, but no real-world examples of the results. Could you pls mention something tangible and measurable? 3. It was mentioned that the role is impactful. So, what are the examples of the positive and especially negative impact of someone in the role? 4. One of the EM role challenges mentioned was "delegation". But is the EM role associated with any responsibility for a product scope/deliverables in your company? What exactly does EM delegate in your context? 5. Another aspect of turning into the EM mentioned was "the art of letting go". But what about acquiring new skills as then there is free capacity after dropping the technical contribution?

    Everyone needs a friend in technical recruiting as a software engineer. When I reflect on earlier CVs I sent out for jobs, I shudder at how bad they were (and now understand why I never got any calls). It was only after sending the CV to a friend of mine who was a technical recruiter, and after she gave me a scathing review that I got it fixed and started getting calls. Everything they are saying in this video should be listened to. Well done folks! @Miro, what is your take on adding key skills to your CV?

    It's so lazy when hirers assume that your portfolio is a reflection of what you can do as a design professional--because they forget the strangeness of the hiring process, mistake themselves for the actual users you'll design for, and tend to have selfish expectations--like wanting to be entertained (ahem) and not wanting to do much reading. Summarizing past work and dealing with yourself and the anxiety of a job search is so different than being motivated by other people and other problems to solve, working as part of a team. And any recruiter worth their salt should know that interviewing well is at best a modest indicator of performing well in the job.

    I would like to add a point here that presentation of conceptual craft design and hierarchical methodology is the best way to convey the insights and depth of a product which helps everyone understand it very quickly and saves you alot of time and thus feeds your company to keep prosper.

    I’ve heard of companies talking about how difficult it is to find the right candidates, so it could be helpful to see from a job seekers point of view. Like you, job seekers don’t have time to read a lot of text. We’re applying for tens of jobs every day, so if a job posting has several paragraphs about how their company is a “Leader in the industry” and using vague business Jargon that any company can use, then I wouldn’t apply. I want to know right away what your company does, and what you need from your new potential employee. Long winded job postings like this give me the impression that the managers will also be vague and not be able to pin point what we’re doing as a team, or provide constructive feedback.

    Haha wait, you saying that interview is a conversation, and in 30sek you saying that there will be a dedicated time to ask your questions. By that means, that 20min a person will answer your, recruiters, questions, and maybe will have a time at the end to ask his/hers own. Am I understanding this approach right? 😅

    • @lifeatmiro
      @lifeatmiro Рік тому

      Good question! Your recruiter will be aiming to answer a few key questions about you to move you forward in the process, so it's a good idea to try to get those covered first. But feel free to ask for clarifying information throughout. The time at the end can be used for any extra questions you weren't able to answer for yourself earlier.

  • @IvanLobashev
    @IvanLobashev Рік тому

    Sometimes if you done a really deep research about the company, it could be hard to find a question which u were interested in but didn't know) But I ques we can ask questions to go dipper in the details in such cases. Thank you very much for the video, there are a lot of useful tips!

    • @lifeatmiro

      Very true! If you're stuck for questions, here are a few you could ask: • How would you describe the culture? • Why is this position open? • What are you looking for in a candidate? • What do you see as some challenges for the person coming into this role? • What does the growth path look like for this role?
