Hey there! I've decided it's about time I stop and smell the Peacebloom. Rather than pumping out high octane guides, I'm beginning to reflect on what I find to be the more important aspects of World of Warcraft. If that's up your alley, stay a while and subscribe!

why we still play Classic WoW.
Ever wonder why Classic WoW still thrives after 20 years? In this video, we’ll break down what makes Classic WoW fun. Slower pacing that turns leveling into a journey, class identity with quirks like Hunters managing ammo or Paladins “seal-twisting,” and a community where friendships form organically. Hidden zones and unfinished secrets spark curiosity, while a player-driven economy makes every gold matter. If you’ve ever wanted to lose yourself in a living, breathing world, this is why Classic WoW is still fun.

plunderstorm is dead... already

The title says it all, but the video says more. We waited a long time for the return of this mode, even though it was unexpected. And we got really nothing new out of it. Hopefully next year I can be in the Creator Royale and show off my plundering abilities, or die trying. Take care!

The title says it all. The War Within has been an awesome experience so far, and it really feels like a return to the World of Warcraft that I've been dreaming about and reminiscing about for so long. This makes me excited for what the future may hold for not only this expansion, but the expansions beyond in the Worldsoul Saga. Take care! For business inquiries: rotanwarcraft@gmail.com

the real liminal spaces of WoW.
Переглядів 21 тис.8 місяців тому
I've seen a host of videos about World of Warcraft's "unreachable" or "unknown" or "secret" or "hidden" or "liminal" spaces, but they all show off the same places. And I have to admit, I'm guilty of showing off some of those too. I wanted to go further, I wanted to explore, and find that child-like wonder again. But I didn't know where to look at first, since I knew most every zone and instance...
i miss when WoW was just a game.

World of Warcraft used to just be a game to me, something to get lost in and wander around purposefully for fun, to enjoy myself. Nowadays I find myself more concerned with my or others' performance in raids, dungeons, and any facet of the game really. I'm experiencing a personally longing for the simpler days of exploration for the sake of seeing something new, not being rewarded extrinsically...

I've never played Plunderstorm. I don't even know how it works, but I feel like it might be pvp, and I refuse to pvp.
I hate that the cosmetic/mount store exists at all. I suppose I can jive with your point of they should have made it available somehow in game first, though.
I've been in some of those unreachable locations back in the day. There were spots where you can glitch your character through the wall and be sort of "under" the world. There, you could VERY CAREFULLY fly and reach that WKM room for example. If I remember, you had to get into a spot where you barely fit, like a tight squeeze. Then drink a giant potion, then get on the biggest mount you could. Then disconnect and log back on, and you've done it!
Far side was great for checking out what PVP would be coming up back in vanilla when it was dangerous it's a travel alone or get the jump on big groups.
Realm identity was true also in TBC, people from dragonmaw EU could remember Daki right? 😂
The sets .. 1 out 10. Do not recommend.
lol and then you imply that Vanilla WoW wasn't "good game design". There'a lot of butt hurt going on in this video. You can explore anywhere you want, nobody said you need to raid or even do dungeons.
I really liked what you had to say about the stories being so cataclysmic. There is plenty of reasons to keep stories smaller and contained. I returned to WoW retail after many years just a couple weeks ago and found the Zandalari content so fun. The art and music and voice acting was so great. I am sad I have finished it but I will be back to cruise the jungle treetops with my pterrordax mount again and again.
I live classic wow. For the best game ever. But it requires an absurd amount of time.
Thanks for making this video, I'm trying to organize my game's plot elements right now and I was worried about making significant end game results for every play through type. I just recently finished Songbird's mission in Cyberpunk and the ending felt so incredibly bland. So much hype and action just to send an NPC I didn't like on a rocket to space with way too many forced cinematic elements. The player's motivations need to be considered more often in games and I think trying to force the player to care is the opposite tactic devs should use when creating story lines.
Short answer because ya’ll have bad taste
If i would want to play again, i would only play classic up till wotlk.
wow classic had a soul
The only time when I play classic actively is when I have to listen to an audio book for school or for myself . I can play it like runescape where my character just stands and attacks while I am 100% focused on the book that I am listening to . I would highly recommend you all to read Dostoevsky's books , I have only read Crime and Punishment since I had to do it for school , but I will definitely read the other ones and hit the max level when I finish them . If it were not for this I would not play classic . PVP is less fun , endgame repeatability is less fun , class design is WAY worse , like why am I not able to thunderclap when in prot stance ? Tanking is also much less fun , you have much less control over your survivability but are heavily gear happed over skill gapped , you are less important as a tank , healing is mostly just casting with no playstyle variability , no transmog ( which is why I am using morph addons when playing , if it were not for these then I would also not play classic ) . World design , especially in terms of quests is worse , especially when comparing it to cata revamp since reading all of those quests was ton of fun ( imo that was peak of worldbuilding while staying true to the wow from the past ) , while in classic it is just kinda dry . And overall you have much less control over your performance and you are much more gear limited in classic , which again is derived from the classes being much simpler and having less complex design and that leads to less skill expression . Like look at warrior 1v1 duels , it is literally based on luck ( who crits , parries etc. ) , you can not find such lack of control over the outcome in retail . Sure this lack of control and prioritizing time spent into the game/farming over skill expression might be better for some , but since other games that I enjoy like aoe2de ( online 1v1s/teams etc. ) and league are heavily prioritizing skill expression , I just can not find classic being more fun personally Also the thing that no one has mentioned yet . When you mentioned that classic was much more difficult than retail , but then showed a clip of leveling process only . Why not compare other content as well like raiding , dungeons , pvp etc. And then make an argument that many people prefer the leveling itself being more difficult than the endgame due to reasons , but doing it your way was just a bit dishonest . Also how does a green flat blob with some mountain blobs look better than dragonflight's emerald dream , the latter one at least has textures xd
your choice is Turtle WoW <3
cus retail is dogshit
why do people hate retail? what is so bad about it?
Bro yes. This resonated with me 100%. My first experience with WoW was during WOTLK - me and my friend were hanging out during summer vacation from school playing Arcanists on FunOrb and wanted a new game. We kept seeing trial offers for WoW but being silly teenagers, we thought it was just for super nerds. We finally gave in and the second we stepped into the world of Azeroth we were hooked. We were exploring everywhere, we accidentally turned pvp on because "The shield looked cool on our portrait", and then a stray level 80 horde came through, stopped, looked at us and then destroyed us before an ally level 80 helping his low level friend came by and they got into this epic duel. And we thought it was the coolest thing ever, and wanted to be like that. Oh man..good times...
I agree
Agreed, the journey aspect is especially strong in this one - that's the main pillar that all of the game's mechanics are diverging to I believe
Spot on
Huh? Are you one of those players who only grind dungeons and take the most effective pre-made builds? All these water skills are extremely useful and practical in certain situations. Both when you need to kill a bunch of underwater enemies or when you need to run somewhere and the shortest path is through a lake or some other large body of water. It's very useful as horde in stranglethorn when doing the murloc quests or trying to get to the deadmines, etc.etc. In TBC it is also useful to get to several dungeons. Yeah, you don't "need" these water abilities, but they can help you save a lot of time. By your logic you also don't need any of your other buffs or mounts.
It's weird the amount of hate this video is getting. I think this is a very well put together video and I agree with all the points you made. I played retail WoW for 20 years and I've slowly watched it turn from the game I love, into a shambling corpse that no longer resembles any of the things that made it great in the first place. I'm sure it's greater than ever to many people, but after Legion, the game just kept getting worse and worse to me with the only improvements being in minor QoL things, meanwhile the story and overall gameplay languished and withered, dying a slow and painful death. I made my return to Vanilla this year, and my God, it's such a night and day difference. I truly feel like I'm home again. And many might say it's simply nostalgia, but no: it feels like I'm playing an actual *game* again, not some brightly colored Skinner Box with flashing lights and an endless treadmill. And that's to say nothing of how well-crafted and truly alive the world itself is. When Classic came out, I scoffed and thought: "Pfft, who would ever want to go back to that? We have it so good here. Retail WoW is the formula perfected," but at the end of the day, that's all that Retail truly is: a formula. And for the people that enjoy that formula, fantastic! I wish it's always as fun to you as it is right now. But for me, that formula got stale ages ago; meanwhile Vanilla manages to feel as fresh to me as the day it came out over 20 years ago. I think that boils down to passion, worldbuilding, mystery, and a commitment to being an actual social, player-driven RPG.
Yez, the chat part is a sad one, even on private servers they were avaible as gobal/world chat, damn miss those times. Edit: for the sake of endgame only they sacrified the whole game / gameplay.
I tried it, got to level 60, and decided it definitely wasn't for me. Give me all the smoothness and variety of modern wow any day, I just struggle to be entertained by what feels mechanically outdated. Also, the difficulty being the characters were mechanically weak and there was a high threshold for the minimum effective performance that isn't there in retail, but the reality is that the complexity in higher tiers of play absolutely outmatches anything Classic ever offered. There is a reason why Molten Core was beaten in greens. Not completely fair of you to show your lvl 10 character decked in heirlooms either, considering you mostly had no stats on gear in vanilla. I think if that character of yours in retail had no gear it would have worked quite closer to the initial WoW reality, just felt a lot better to play. Mind you, I am also a person who played in vanilla, so not like the nostalgia glasses aren't available for me to pick up and put on, I sincerely believe we have only gotten better (minus a few drops in the story, that is). Any chance I had to change my mind evaporated when they decided to start cycling classic up into the later expansions as well, only interest I may have had would have related to managing to work within an "evergreen" character progression where I could get something geared up in a way that wouldn't eventually be outdated.
as someone who started in cataclysm i could never get into classic , i could see the appeal but its not for me , as the video says, classic required way more time and player interaction but that made it a way bigger time sink , im playing retail from time to time but i dont touch the endgame, retail is has a lot of flaws but its very casual friendly , i can just jump in do some legacy raids for xmog , pet battles , complete achievments ( im working on loremaster rn ) etc.. , i do miss the time when your character was just a random adventurer not "the champion" tough
U mean a bot-driven Economy
Fr, the nostalgia glasses are thick with this one
@ why so mad ?
That’s a problem with the developer, not the game
Classic is a great game but i disagree with the "reading every quest" i don't know a single person who doesn't use Questie, in fact i couldn't tell you the last time i read a quest.
Sometimes it's time to move on.
And people will if there is enough reason to.
Agree, I played retail, then I moved on, now I just play classic.
To a better game, yeah. That's why I play Classic now.
I mean, that’s why people play SoD. Instead of playing the same ol Classic version over and over… what’s the definition of insanity again?
Used to play Retail. Then Classic released in 2019 and never went back. So I did move on 😂
I'm convinced. I'm gonna try classic WoW thanks to this. Never played it, only modern retail WoW (which I had some fun with too!). Looks like a nice diversion from Final Fantasy 11 which is my go-to MMO. I played the first version of Final Fantasy 14, which for good reason was dramatically panned. I don't think it was great either, but it also had some good things going for it, and in its final patch before shutting down I thought it was so close to genuinely being a good game. The Final Fantasy 14 reboot just isn't doing it for me, because it lacks so much if not everything of what you mention in this video, and as it is today plays like diet-WoW. I've played the reboot since it launched and I still log in for its patches to say hi to my friends and maybe see if it's gotten slightly better. Everything is instantly gratifying, everyone can teleport anywhere on-demand, classes don't have much in the way of unique abilities that make them more desirable than the others, and they all play essentially the same way, spamming their combo over and over until the enemy is dead. Nothing is situational. The fights and dungeons have all followed the same formula for 11 years now. Final Fantasy 14 1.0 had what you talk about; it required and rewarded patience, manual travel, player communication, and gave you classes that were genuinely unique and true to the series' roots (mostly), but the classes all had things others didn't that required people to work together to succeed. It also didn't force any class to be a tank, healer, or damage dealer. Of course a paladin was more suited as a tank, but that was only a norm, not a game rule. Everyone was free to experiment and utilise their classes as they saw fit. So hearing you talk about all these things that you miss reminded me of how much I miss them too in FF14. The series has been with me since childhood, first playing FF9 on the PS1, and the fact I can't have fun with its popular MMO makes me sad. Maybe WoW Classic can scratch this "I wish MMOs could take a little step back" itch for me. Thank you.
If you're looking for a way to play for free in a place that has a great and friendly community, I recommend TurtleWoW! :D
I played an alliance rogue. I knew the horde rogues by name. The server had "characters", people "hung out" in stormwind. Each class felt like its own class. The rogue hideout in arathi was so cool too. Ive never had a game since with the same level of community.
I mean, most of the points talked in the video can be explained because "we" were kids. When you are very young, and things are brand new, many things (even simple) can be extraordinary, fun, and interesting. Like pretending to be the character in Skyrim and just walk around.
ppl who made classic wow was like "hey lets make our favorite game of all time" ppl who make retail is like "add more glitter to the turd"
They all kinda look like ass tbh.
Play hardcore
Loved this video. I agree with all your points. I also enjoy classic because: - No transmog. You can visually see what people have equipped. - Smaller loot/gear pools. Easier to remember big upgrades, cool unique drops, and where to find them. - Fewer crafting materials. The same handful of materials are used across each profession - Loads of RP "friction". Can't talk to NPCs while shapeshifted, need flint and tinder to create a fire, and other things that put roleplay before convenience. - Cannot customize character after creation. Better sense of permanence and recognizability of other players. - More group quests. Quests that give great EXP or loot that basically require a group to help out. You meet loads of new people this way. I think the only things I would ever want added to WoW Classic, other than more areas to explore and quests to do, would be introducing more systems that make sense in the context of worldbuilding and roleplay, such as a Guild Bank, more usage out of the keyring tab, backpacks/bags visually displaying on your character's back/belt, things like this.
Nostalgia is just cope for people who hate fun. 8:00 (nice editing timing btw) Is also such a retail spin on it. Its much more accurate to say that Vanilla has no Padding. Vanilla is fun starting at the second quest. Retail ... retail is agony for dozens of hours.
I wish that Blizzard would finally start adding new stuff to classic like OSRS does. SoD has so much promise but I don’t like seasonal games that much. Absolutely adore the OG world of Azeroth.
If they're going to copy RuneScape's homework they should try and actually learn the same lesson
Have you looked at Lord of the Rings Online?
aye, things were better when games were made with passion and love and soul
I prefer single player games mostly now. No pressure to compete or "stay up" with your team or raid or whatever. No keeping up with the Joneses. Do what you want, take as long as you want, start playing when you want, stop when you want.
The try-hard attitude has been leaking into classic. Faerlina server has started not rezzing people after fights if they felt your dps was too low. Fun people in South America.
was this video sponsored by blizzard
I have been solo playing WoW basically since vanilla. I am currently doing loremaster in old zones. All I do is quest and explore. It's low risk, not stressful and reasonably enjoyable.
Huge agree.
can I get these mythic transmogs without actually doing mythic? I really like the death knight one but I'll not be able to raid due to time zone difference
The main problem here is the humans.. In the past those who played were real humans, nowadays those who play pretend to be humans without their humanity
Wow now
Exploring and finding cool lore through old main quest lines is a lot of fun. The garbage fetch quests suck. Although it is not nearly as much suck as the age old formula of new content making you forget how to fly, making all of your gear garbage, reducing everyone's level only to force you to grind out 10 more levels, and then worst of all, being socially pressured to put in a 40 hour WoW week to keep up with your obsessive friends. They might as well put in a HR department in Orgrimmar with how much work that game makes you do.
Retail absolutely sucks for this
hmm well i main warrior, so warrior is my fav but some of the other ones look good to me. shaman, rogue, monk and mage were my other favs.
