Today, we’re diving deep into the incredible mic collection at the studio-arguably one of my favorite parts of working here! From our impressive SSL console to a jaw-dropping lineup of vintage and modern microphones, this place is an absolute playground for audio engineers and artists. But what really leaves everyone speechless is our mic locker, brimming with nearly every mic you’ve ever dreamed of testing out.
For this session, we recorded a rare mahogany Steinway piano (with original strings!) and put as many mics as possible on it-from classic AKG C414s and Telefunken Elam 251s to vintage C12s, DPAs, and a range of ribbon mics including the AEA R84A and R88A. We even broke out the legendary RCA 44 “Elvis” mic for a truly unique room perspective. We’ll listen to each mic, compare their tones, and experiment with some intriguing blends and a bit of lush reverb, all in pursuit of that perfect piano sound.
