Acreage Life
Приєднався 30 тра 2015
Here in the Canadian prairies, we get torrential rains in the spring and hot dry droughts in the summer. Gardening and outdoor projects have a limited timeframe per year. I have hundreds of trees to protect, a flower garden to maintain and a well managed vegetable garden. There is always a project to work on and I document the real-life and raw footage here. Rainwater harvesting and irrigation project are a passion, so make sure to check out that content. Sometimes I put a lot of detail and perfection into my projects and sometimes, there is a lot of duct tape and temporary solutions. In any case, please like, subscribe and follow along to see the progress on my rain water harvesting projects and all my other projects I am working on here on the acreage.
Backyard Oasis DIY - I Built a Huge Fireplace on Concrete Pad
Product links:
Angle grinder concrete bit: amzn.to/3Buiynr
PL masonry adhesive: amzn.to/4eujrev
Hey guys,
I’ve taken on the massive project of extending my backyard oasis by adding this huge concrete pad and building a 12.5-thousand-pound fireplace. I’m going to walk through the project from start to finish and share the good, bad and lessons learned from the adventure.
The very first challenge is finding the perfect location. I want a good view of it from my house, so I can appreciate it every day. I want it far enough from my house, so smoke won’t make its way inside. On that same note, I want don’t want to be sitting in smoke while out enjoying the fire, so I want to be upwind. Since the wind is primarily NW, I want to be sitting away from the smoke. I want a fireplace near the gazebo on a large pad, and I want a sidewalk connecting the 2. Not a straight sidewalk, but something with character where I can add a rock garden or shrubs. The pad will be a dyed a dark grey. And I want it stamped to look like rocks. The fireplace will be situated here at the end. And I like this setup, I can see it from my house and I don’t need to worry about the smoke with winds from the NW. Oh yeah, and this area over here is out of the question because my septic field is there. As for the type of fireplace, it will be a pizza oven or a regular fireplace with a wood storage box on each side. Though the pizza over sounds cool, I think the novelty will wear off quickly and I will get more use from a regular fireplace.
First, I rented a sod cutter and cut a very rough outline.
I then dug out the area where I'll place the substrate.
Ok, our first lesson learned. Make sure the crushed concrete is pretty close to level before compacting or tampering the material.
I’ve identified some low areas where water was pooling and I need the base to be flush with the bottom of my gazebo pad. This pad is going to be solid and I’m saving a ton of money by doing it myself. Special thanks to my cement friend to gave me some great pointers along the way.
The rebar is in place and the cement gets poured next. We are using a sidewalk formula to provide higher strength and durability. And here is a quick time-lapse of the pour.
My friend will be back tomorrow to remove the forms and spray on a coat of sealant.
I’m extremely happy with how this turned out. It’s the perfect color and that sealant makes the stone stamping just pop. I can’t wait to get starting on the fireplace build. I’ll fill in those gaps with soil and get started on some rock gardens in the spring. I’m also pleased that the gazebo pad matches the new one perfectly.
Another lesson, to double check the kit as soon as it arrives.
If you are wondering about these surface cuts in the area where the fireplace will be located, they are to help with drainage. Totally not required and just cosmetic, but if I had my time back, I would have skipped that step. Speaking of lessons learned, I should have not stamped the area where the fireplace will be installed. The stamped sections are rounded and the bricks are not going to sit flush on the pad.
Using a concrete bit on my angle grinder, I’m going to knock off all the high spots.
So, here’s the problem I’m solving. The brick isn’t flush with the pad and that’s just asking for trouble. I don’t want cracking bricks or even the pad.
Now with this level layer of new cement, I’ve maximized the surface area for the bricks on the pad. Thinking back however, I didn’t need to level out the areas inside the storage boxes.
And another lesson learned or an FYI. The colors of the fireplace and storage boxes are not consistent. It’s all quarry story, but the grey bricks are from the storage box kit and the reddish ones are from the fireplace. I will mix them all together so that the color differences blend well with each other.
From the factory, the bricks are covered in sand and dust. Let’s rinse that off so the PL masonry adhesive sticks better.
Fire bricks that don’t fit or are too large, I have been using the angle grinder to reshape them.
I feel truly grateful to have this new addition to my yard. I can’t wait to invite friends over for some drinks and smores.
Alright guys, here’s the finished product. This was an amazing, fun and challenging project and I couldn’t be happier with the results. I have so many ideas to develop this area in the future, so make sure you subscribe to be notified of future videos.
I’d definitely recommend purchasing a kit. This one included everything I needed, with well thought out, detailed instructions. I encountered multiple issues but found easy solutions to get around them. Overall, the satisfaction of doing this myself is the best feeling ever.
Thanks for watching and make sure to drop a like, and subscribe so you don’t miss out on more acreage life projects.

Hey guys, Today I’m going to be replacing some dying spruce trees. We had a very wet summer last year and they didn’t do well. This year has been very dry with a lot of weevil activity. I’ll show you some weevil damage, how I ripped the old ones out and a little surprise I found when planting my new trees from Costco. I used my ATV to pull out the old tree and then I planted the new one. Here a...

I have a super quick video for you today. We are putting my old hot water boiler to the test against my Navien, tankless water heater. I’m going to test out how long it takes to heat my hot water to 120-degree F (almost 50 C). Before I installed this on demand system, I tested my boiler. 8 Ways to Protect My Home during EXTREMELY Cold Temperatures
You saved me! In my case, snow was actually blocking the intake. Filter was clean.
Ur tricks helped me out. Thankyou so much.
Thank you, this video was concise and easy to follow
Extremely helpful. I had this issue today on new year's eve!!! You are a savior!
Thank you so much! That was exactly my problem, up and running again with Hot Water in less than 10 minutes. Greatly appreciate your video and assistance.
Used your video December 2024 worked like a charm, thank you
Thank you so much for your video! You saved my family time, money, and comfort on this bitter winter’s day.
Thanks!
Your video was great! That shock zap intro has gotta go though.
Really Really appreciate it. It works!!!! Thanks 🙏🏾 god bless you
You the man! Def gonna add this to my seasonal routine. Happy to support your channel by using your product links. Thank you for your contribution to the platform.
Thank you! I’m about to start my annual maintenance today before the cold weather sets in.
Confirmed Fix. Thank you very much! Appreciate you, Acreage Life. Liked, subbed, commented. Tip: I used a telescoping magnet to install the filter screw a few turns, then finished with screw driver. Hope this helps someone.
Thank you for sharing..
Thanks so much for the help, it was perfect advice!!
Doubt you’ll see this, but mine keeps shutting off mid shower and there is no code. Any help would be appreciated
I would either watch the heater while someone is using the hot water, or set up a security camera or something to capture a video and audio. That would confirm there is no code and would capture any sound. You could sent that to the manufacture for their opinion. I would do my yearly maintenance and if that doesn't fix it, a plumber would be required. Maintenance video: ua-cam.com/video/Zdl1IzlakrU/v-deo.html
I owe you a beer!!!
69 year old Granny who watched your video. Climbed into the attic and found the unit. Followed your direction. Hot water! Thank you!
Great job! Go Granny!!
Thank you so much! This video is gold. I couldn’t find a single one with instructions from the beginning
you are my hero
Hello I have a question since you seem like an expert regarding chokecheery trees. I have an older chockerry tree with some significant bark exposed (im on top of it and that is not concerning me) I am wondering if I should cut the large sucker that is right underneath of the exposed bark damage or should I wait for the tree to repair itself next summer and then cut the sucker next October to not stress the tree out?
Thank you soo much. It works like a charm. ❤
Thank you, I have the 42 inch hustler raptor. It looks like I’m just gonna rake the leaves or get my Snowplow guy to come over who also does big yards with his professional machine.
I use the mulcher kit for the leaves and it works great. I have a lot of leaves but not a ton. Here are my thoughts on the mulcher: ua-cam.com/video/0Z3-fggN1GY/v-deo.html
What would you use in the case of dust build-up? We raise chicks in our garage, which produces a lot of "chick dust". Is there a certain type of extraction fan that I should be looking at, to help reduce the amount of dust deposited around the garage? Perhaps one with a certain filter system? Looking for something that would be easy to maintain / clean, but would also be effective. At the moment, likely looking at ceiling mounted or wall mounted.
Great question. I would imagine that a folder would be best, but this in not my specialty. Hopefully someone on here will see your question.
Wow thankyou from Edmonton.🇨🇦🕊️
Thank you
Thank you for getting right to a point
Thanks!
You are very welcome! Happy to help and thanks for the Super Thanks!!
Same issues on the 48” deck. Just about worthless. I’ll see how it does with leaves in the fall and if that’s a problem, I’m selling the entire mower in the spring.
I have the 43" deck and I just tried picking up leaves yesterday. 1st pass picked them up well with no clogging. Pass number 2, I could have picked up more with one hand. The chute clogged to no end and kept happening so I avoided it altogether. Leaves were 100% dry as we haven't had rain in almost a most. Did not work well at all unfortunately.
Worked exactly as you said you said it would thanks so much for this video, perfect instructions and camera angles
Why did you need to add the engine guard along with the hitch reinforcement?
You don't need the guard, but since it came with the tractor to protect the engine I kept it installed.
Thank you! You just saved me money
Thanks! This saved me from calling in a service repair. It was exactly what happened.
Thank you, sir.
Thanks it was very useful!!!
Well explained video. Thanks
Thank you! That screw that holds it has to have a nut in the back, PIA to get it back in. I just used a larger width sheet metal screw that caught into the plastic hole
i think i just saved few hundreds of $$$ -- ironically i got the error after HVAC/AC was "serviced" and they said to not look at Navien unless there is an error or hot water is not working! Such a BS -- i watched your video and found a manual of my model; took me 15-20 min to clean the air filter, it was so bad, never cleaned, $$$ spent for "services" during the years.. thank you thank you thank you for this VIDEO!!!⛑
Awesome! I'm glad the video helped. If you want to perform your yearly service maintenance yourself, I have a video for that too: ua-cam.com/video/Zdl1IzlakrU/v-deo.html
@@acreagelife9644 thank you again - I’ll try to clean the water filter next; I had the unit descaled by a plumber couple of years ago but he didn’t clean either of the filters; I wish I could add a pic of the air filter here - it was filled with dirt from the outside
Worked like a charm! Thank you sir! Subscriber gained
You saved my bacon at 9:30 at night! Thanks for posting this!
My exact problem but I was able to pull the dust layer off like it was the driers lint trap once it was removed. Thanks for this!
You should run the Oregon Gator blade with the mulch kit and try again. The rear teeth on the gator blades do a better job of mulching than high-lift blades.
This worked perfectly thanks a million
Excellent! Very complete. Good job! Thank you.
The solution was good! I found mud daubers had built a nest directly above the screen. Cleaned them out, and the hot water heater was working again!
Knowing how clogged my filter was, do you suggest regular maintenance. If so, how often do you check?
Funny you should ask. Here are the 6 steps I follow for annual maintenance. ua-cam.com/video/Zdl1IzlakrU/v-deo.html
We have had a couple of fires near me and a big one over the weekend. Looked like ash and soot had fouled my filter. FYI.
Just woke up to the WIFE saying- The waters not getting hot! as she was getting in the shower. I checked the heater and the 110 code was displaying. I go to you tube and just like that. A quick and concise cause and solution to the problem. Not a lot of snow on ANYTHING her in Southern California. So I was confident it was the internal filter. My unit does not have the snap straps so a Phillips screwdriver was called to action. 5 screws total/ 4 on the cover and 1 on the filter clamp. Most certainly the culprit. Unplugged the unit (safety First ) Cleaned the screen that had a layer of lint like a dryer lint screen. I dried it and re installed. Plugged it in and was pleased that it had a memory of my settings. I was able to enjoy a warm shower. Not so much for the wife.....LOL. Thank you.Excellent information.
Awesome outcome! So glad I was able to help!
I heard you dont remove the plastic /rubber cover its a gasket
There was a plastic bag jammed in my intake. I should check camera's to find out who did it.
Good man
