How to replace an MPC2000XL Zip drive with a floppy drive
Переглядів 2267 місяців тому
How to replace an MPC2000XL Zip drive with a floppy drive... . . Many of the newer MPC2000XLs had Zip drives or card readers. This one has a Zip drive with the infamous “click of death”. I decided to go with a floppy instead of a zip for its replacement. I’ve always liked the physical size and storage of Zip disks but have never had a good experience with their reliability and with the zuluSCSI...

Hello is I 2000XL compatible ?
Nice video, thanks. Question : Is there a portable drive that I can buy to put my floppy cards in so I don't have to unscrew my MPC ?
Dope Brother !! I share the same love for these dirty machines
Midi clock and Midi Time Code Slip! Thats why ppl perfer not to us it for solo tracks. 8outs is they way to go. Producer at all-time have the mpc snake-out to the board to process live! *outs are must for real studio work! To honest some won't even use the mpc in the studio setting if those 8outs aren't installed...Now at home is diferent
Like how does this work!!! Any more full details on this ?
The Internet archive is amazing for downloading all these sample CDs that would have been harder to archive without it
Can’t we just have a new SCSI IDE bridge like we had 20 years ago, instead of all this convoluted nonsense? The card reader in my XL can use any size card over SCSI bridge and everything is just plug and play
I wouldn’t say it’s nonsense. All you have to do is plug it in and use it. 7 virtual drives on a card. Transferring files back and forth to a pc is always a process but not really convoluted. There’s no special software involved on Mac and any size card is fine. The xl has the same near 1 gig limitation as the 2k. The Zulu adds 6x more drives on the sd for 7 gigs total. If you got a good work flow stick with it!
@@bootdiskandchill the 1gb limit is only for atapi. My card reader is scsi and it can use any size drive. I thought you actually made this, but you’re a reseller. But whoever did design this might have the expertise to clone the scsi bridge that was discontinued 18 years ago. It currently sells for $400 used I’m not very experienced with isos and anything beyond noob level computing intimidates me, but I’m sure I will come around to it eventually because I’m not paying $400 for a scsi bridge
@@APMTenants honestly man I would pursue it if I was you. It could probably help a lot of people out. I’ve never heard of it. If you need some help with ISOs just follow along. It’s not too different from loading a USB stick, hard disk or anything else, only it’s virtual - a file that represents hardware.
From real instruments to plastic nonsense 😅
could u tell me about a error bout my mpc2000???? the question is : when i insert the os, it told me about load error, but when i take out my usbfloppy, it told me about insert the os disk, could u tell me whats going on?
thank you !!!!!!! (a far far salute from china, please forgive about my terrible english.)
You might have a bad copy of the OS or bad disk. Definitely track down a known working floppy drive, emulator, or SCSI disk and download the OS 1.72. The MPC2000 requires it to boot every time you turn it on. This is one of the reasons the ZuluSCSI is great. The OS can sit on the SD card along with your data and boot the MPC2000 in just a few seconds.
@@bootdiskandchill thank you for your answer,I used have a old floppy driver, and I tested it by 2kxl, it’s okay, but now, I setup a gotek for it, still not useful(I have formatted the usb into 999 part and I copied the os into the 1st part, still error like what I said above) and i have a bluescsi,i formatted the img file by 2kxl,and I copied the 2k classic os into it,it still like that, maybe which chip was broken but I don’t know about it
@@WitnessVNZ it's probably the SCSI fuse you need to replace FS1 on the circuit board behind the SCSI port. If the BlueSCSI has a USB port on it try that - on the ZuluSCSI if you power it you can bypass a blown fuse. Good Luck!
@@bootdiskandchill thank you again, bro, but the machine repair buddy told me that my scsi on mpc is okay! So can u tell me which the problem could be other parts ????
You’re crazy for that but I love it
Damn, that person got his Bike tire stolen.
Thank you, this worked perfectly. I tried it the first time and it didn't work, but I think my mistake was I downloaded the ISO off of your website and kept the ISOs in their respective folders rather than letting them stand alone.
Your welcome! That’s good point too. Glad you got it sorted!
What a nice easter egg. I did not know about this hidden screen.
That's so dope!! I've had so many issues with Floppies that I just started tracking out whatever beat I had with the 8 outs and then just Power Cycle and start the next one 😂
This is a much better way to archive for sure 👍
It’s not working. the iso is still showing up with the cd
What version of Ableton are you using? They took it out of the most recent versions
Any alternative DAWs or VSTs that would be able to read these types of files?
@@bootdiskandchill ableton 11
@@jotatokujo1690 they are going to be older - like logic 7/8, ableton live 10 and below. I keep licenses for older software and haven’t upgraded from 10. Legacy software is pretty cheap on eBay and people can do license transfers. Really tho we just need the already converted disks right so some some type of sample pool would be cool for interested ppl.
@@SnazzyBoxx only 10 and older unfortunately. Maybe they bring it back sometime
does it have to be SND Format?
No, it can be SND or WAV.
@@bootdiskandchill whats wrong with my MPC Beats, why can't I load both SND and WAV file?

Hi, my MPC 2000xl is in OS 1.20 and I don't have original floppy reader to downgrade to initial OS. Is the ZuluSCSI still allright / worth it for me? Thank you!
Yeah. You can run any os with the Zulu. I would highly recommend it.

@@Gasparzinho311 if you want to experiment before I drop the video try right-clicking an ISO file and select Open With diskimagemounter this will mount the ISO file (virtual disk) and allow you to view it in the finder like a hard disk or USB stick. Good guide , the limitation of 512 files caught me out !
I forgot to add 8.3 file names too. I think you can go up to 12 or 16 in the MPC if it stays on the MPC but as soon as you start transferring files to and from the computer it chops it to 8 characters.
Probably best just having a smallish mb size on partition A scsi0 then move them off onto other partitions or other SCSI numbers. I had 600 mb on partition A scsi0 but fell fowl of the number of files 512 so had loads of space left 😂
@@mrrothers3024 good point!

Hey bro this exactly what I was going for. If you have any more tutorials like this, I'd love them.
Thanks! I'll be dropping some more - stay tuned!
I need to update my OS on Mpc2xl via floppy.I only have a Usb EX.Floppy drive It wont allow me to format tje floopy to fat32 fron the computer. What should I do? Thanks!
Are you using windows? I use an external usb floppy too and don’t have any problems. Were you able to format the disk at all?
and in the windows system how do i put a drum kit that i bought on the internet and are sounds in wav to put them in the micro sd and read it my mpc 2000xl through the zuluscsi
@pinstream you have to use the App PowerISO for windows. Insert the microSD card into your computer using an adapter and mount the ISO file of whichever HD you want to use. Drag and drop the files onto the ISO and unmount. Put the microSD in the ZuluSCSI and load your sounds!
Are these loaded with sounds already?
Yes! They come with the entire mpc library from the 60,3000,2000 and xl plus some other samples and the 2000 boot disk. Best solution for the mpc2000 by far!
Thank you for sharing🎼🎵🎵🎶 MPC3000

The most pleasant person, with a MPC and a SCSI2SD. Everybody else seems to be angry.😰😰😰
Thank you! I try and keep it chill 😎
if my mpc2000 couldnt into the os,what should i do!?please tell me,thank you
Could be a bad disk or bad floppy drive. If you tried the SCSI port the fuse could be bad. Try a new disk or two and then replace the drive if necessary. Good luck!
@@bootdiskandchill thank you,i dont have any floppy,i use gotek,my mpc4000 read my usb disk as floppy, and i could see the 2000os in mpc4000,but when i insert usb into mpc2000,it said what i said,so, im not sure about my gotek,if my gotok is okay,my main board maybe in troubles…….thank you again!

Check your MIDI cables, they could be bad!
Or just check the settings in ableton Make sure your audio interface is set up in it…
Hi can this be installed internally on the MPC2000 or just the rear scsi ports... and can you get as longer ribbon cable so it doenst stick out the back?
Also can work in the Akai S3000XL as well?
Hi Mark! Yes and yes! You can get a db25 cable to sit it to the side. You can’t install this model internally but you can other ones. I recommend this format though. Works well with a 3000xl.

Does it work with Mac ?
Do you have to format the disk
You can also format the floppy straight from the MPC.
If you already have a boot disk. If you buy an MPC2000 second hand you’ll need to obtain or make one to boot the machine and make another.
does it work on a 2000xl tho?
Yes
Yes! You just need an adapter.
Nice One bro! IT WORKS !! Thanks for making this video and sharing the knowledge. PEACE!
Hi, I have copied your ISO File and created a new one with my samples, but the mpc didn´t read it. Do you know why? thanks a lot!
Hi Felix! Does the partition load in the MPC? Can you see the samples? What kind of card are you using (brand/size)?
Hi, I format de SD with the mpc. I have HD0 to HD7 with partitions. But I want to load on my computer samples and then loaded to mpc via SD, I cant make that happen. Do you suggest something? thank you very much for the help :)@@bootdiskandchill
@@felixtombeur2768 ok Felix, you will have to mount the ISOs on the computer. If you use windows try the app “power iso”. If you are on Mac right click the iso and select mount then navigate to it in the finder. Because they are in Akai format and partitioned, a computer can only access the “a” partition. Also the file system of the mpc is limited to 512 files per partition. They will need to be named 8.3 like bootdisk.wav. Make sure they are 16 bit and not larger than the memory in your MPC.
@@bootdiskandchill Hi thanks a lot! Im still figuring out this. I have also other question, how you managed to saved on diferentes partitions? I mean when one is full and can´t save all, how to continue onto the next one?
I have a question. My floppy drive went bad so i ccan't upload any sounds or make any beats. Would i be able to make beats if i purchased one of these? Thanks!
Yes you would
ok so i got the 8gb card that came with zulu (mpc2000). i can only get HD0, HD1, HD2, HD4 to work. if i name anything HD3, HD5, HD7, then nothing works and i have to boot from floppy. if i only use 0, 1, 2, and 4 then i can boot from sd. any ideas? it’s not the ISO, i don’t think at least. it’s either something to do with disk space, or that it doesn’t like things named HD3, HD5, or HD7. i don’t think i’ll figure it out bc i tried everything i can think of.
github.com/ZuluSCSI/ZuluSCSI-firmware/wiki/ZuluSCSI-Manual#introduction-features That’s strange. Here is a link to the full manual. There may be something you’re missing. I name all my iso files HD0.iso, HD1.iso, HD2.iso, HD3.iso, HD4.iso, HD5.iso and HD7.iso. I make new iso files 899MB format in the MPC and name it something like “HD5 - 2024 beats.iso” before dropping the MPC2000 os on it, there’s a lot of flexibility in the naming. Make sure you’re using the extension .iso in the file name. Tell me about what you’re doing. Are you trying to set up a new card?
Link pls
May I ask what music you’ve used for this video? It sounds soothing :O

recently purchased the zulu scsi2sd rp2040 for my 2000xl. do i need another adapter for it to hook into my scsi port or does it plug into the computer as itself? just wondering if i need to purchase anything besides the 2040 and of course the sd card. thanks!
Yes. You could use a small plastic adapter for the db25 of the Zulu to the xl or a cable . For the xl I prefer the cable. Other than that that’s all you need!
whats the adapter called?@@bootdiskandchill
The 2kxl has a scsi port at the rear, no db25. You would need an adapter.
