    One aspect to mention is that we are paying for the compute of the "UI logic" when done server side , but client side counting with the compute power of the client is the way to go most of the time. Most of the reasons I heard are not strong enough to justify having to compute/pay server side.

    what are your thoughts on Flutter? Working with a single codebase for multiple platforms.

    • @ryanburgess
      @ryanburgess 13 днів тому

      Flutter and React Native are great options for building multiple apps. There are some tradeoffs though. Having native mobile apps is always the best option for flexibility and quality but that obviously means you're coding for multiple platforms separately. So it really depends what you need for your app. When I was at Netflix we had debated leveraging React Native to build out native signup flows for iOS and Android but we realized there were a lot of limitations going that route. Hopefully that helps. It feels like the answer is another "it depends" :)

    The X11 protocol used on Unix workstations kinda solved a lot of these new questions many decades ago There is also DisplayPostscript from Sun Microsystems as an alternative Its worth dusting off some old code and seeing how they did it These ancient tools had full blown 3D CAD workstations and video editing working over 10 Mbps networks, with single core backend machines, and a few MB of memory

    I am curious who actually does this well? What applications do it well? I have had fairly good luck over the years with it for typical business applications where it is like a pretty standard Data over forms type app. While the talk about collaborating better with teams, I am curious for extremely small teams or even single person teams. I do think most of the time it overkill and takes a lot of planning and becomes a big distraction more then solving the actual business problems.

    on the web, querystring was still used for a while for load-balanced session IDs to scale out web servers better (before the session could be reliably pinned at layer 7 to one server).. it also became real nice on web apps when the hosting app (browser) could close out and reopen (within a certain timeframe) and the user not have to log in and find the last page they were at, as long as they're coming from the same IP and haven't changed app versions (or w/e your constraints are).

    This episode was very cathartic for me and I loved hearing everyones perspectives. One thing that wasn't discussed is staying at a job longer than you should have. I have now done this a few times in my career and, to Cole's point, given too much of myself. Now that I've experienced leaving a job where I was very comfortable, taking on more scope, joining a place that made me deeply unhappy, etc. It has taught me a lot about myself and helped me understand what I need out of a job. When you've been in tech as long as we all have, we have the privilege or burden of choice. Some great advice I was given somewhat recently, is never take a job because you're running away from something. Always take a job because you're running toward something. Great job, gents. You're always a beacon of knowledge & empathy for all of us.
