An excellent summary and I entirely agree with the existing 4 top level comments. I swa Threads when it was originally on TV in the 1980s and rewatched last month. It's ******* horiffic and is an absolute must watch for anyone thinking of joining the military or going into politics. If you have children then get a copy of the film When The Wind Blows by the bloke that made The Snowman

Thanks for the video! My preferred translation of the title is The Maiden and the Monster, even though it is not, AFAIK, the official title. It has the same alliteration as Beauty and the Beast, and it translates the not-so-sameness of the fairy-tale.

I've just watched Threads again (the BBC have it on the iPlayer for its 40th anniversary) and it still packs a punch - it's hard to watch, especially if you have seen it before because you know how it ends. The scenes during and after the bombs are especially tough, shocking, terrifying.

I host a silent film underground, this Friday I featured the passion of Joan of arc. I create a soundtrack of modern music to be played with the film and we give a talk about the history of Joan and the film before hand. This film is just as intense and inpactful as it ever has been.

I remember blind buying the movie on Amazon - ALL because I loved the soundtrack to it, and my girlfriend and I smoked a joint and watched it together. I still watch it from time to time, just not the colored version, this movie is meant to be watched in the original Max Fleischer style. It also got me into Oingo Boingo, even if it was in 2004.

Your name pronunciations are actually on-point, they're good. :-) It's a very well done film, one of the late Mr. Herz's best. He couldn't really do much in the horror film genre in 1968-1989 era Czechoslovakia, so he decided to do a fairytale adaptation... and work past the censors by giving it a strong horror atmosphere and plenty of anxious psychology for the Beast. Personally, I think the only weak point is the main female character, but that's because I feel a different actress would have suited this adaptation better. On a sidenote, both the director (Herz) and the film's costume designer (Mrs. Greifová) were born in east Slovakia (Herz in Kežmarok, Greifová in Michalovce), though they worked mainly in the Czech lands later in their careers.

I often wonder if Dune was a box office success would David have disown his film? Lynch doesn't like his film but there's millions who love it including myself. If Star Wars bombed, would it be any less than what it is?
