I lived in the Ruhr area for many years. My parents were very stupid and one of their biggest jokes in life was to move there. We got kind of stuck for a while. Fortunately, I got out to still have a good life. I also bought my mother an apartment in a decent country. Today, I wouldn’t even flush my shit there.

As a person that lives here, in Tenerife, I want to say that locals are suffering the mass arrival of people that comes to the island. Such a demand is making rents unaffordable, and the public services are collapsed. We have thousands of cars and so unbearable traffic just because the Gouverment does not regulate anything. If any person wants to come to live here I'd say please don't. This is not a paradyse anymore, it's becoming a Big city, this is loosing its atractive and there are more and more inequalities and poverty.

I was born in Essen and can tell you that it used to be a hell of lot more depressing when everything smelled of road tar and the Krupp steel works were operating at full blast. Essen actually has some very nice suburban areas and I still find it more aesthetically pleasing than most American cities.

Been there like 1 hour because I needed to wait for a train and I went out the station for a walk: 9 pm, no sign of human life, really bad architecture in the city center and no restaurant or bar open for having something… I did not imagine this was the situation 😅 I’ve read the comments here and I can understand the fact that who lives here has a totally different point of view compared to mine… but believe me, I was really shocked haha

Hey! I have a question about dormitory in Jacobs University. How’s the internet connection of dorm? Will i need an extra net connection, such as cellular data?

Since nobody else is defending the Ruhr area here, I guess I'll have to: It's definitely better than its reputation. Nobody pretends that Essen or Gelsenkirchen are beautiful cities. But they have several advantages most people overlook. Dortmund and Essen are literally the only two West-German cities out of the top 10 biggest German cities where renting a flat is affordable. The entire Ruhr area has excellent public transport compared to the rest of the republic, and it is by far the largest agglomeration in the country with 6 million people living there. It has more symphony orchestras, opera houses, universities and public theatres than any other region and a very distinct local charme. There are no tourists and no tourist traps. There are fewer hipsters than in Berlin. There is a lot of nature as well around the banks of the river Ruhr, most notably around Lake Baldeney. There are historic churches and water castles. It is definitely underrated, but I assume not the easiest urban environment to access and discover as an outsider. When I moved there, I needed about two years to actually discover the really nice bits about the region.
