Project X - a real banger of a knife by Rick Hinderer
Rick Hinderer did it again, and created a hard use knife that is so ergonomic and an evolution of the brand. It addresses so many of the complaints of previous models - it's easier to disassemble, the hardware is captative (the pivot and standoffs aren't free spinning) and the tool to break down the knife is included.

What makes the Kunwu S-Tao so great?
Hmph...I thought you have been carrying this guy recently - on your EOY collections you were auto-pilot front flipping motion on many varieties 😉
Did you change the thumbstuds?
I agree, this is an opus knife for Rick. And thinking about the "triad" of Mick Strider, Chris Reeve, and Rick Hinderer...Reeve seeks perfection by improving the finite details on a small number of models, Hinderer holds rather steady on existing models (including pricing) to keep the customized lego world alive and he got right almost everything that held back his tougher-use brand knives with the PX, and Strider just found a way to increase the prices (seemingly by decreasing the production, but also updating some materials to be fair ;-) Thanks!
@@MitchBollig I want to say I dislike the man but you have to give it to him ... He makes a quality knife! I would put Les George at the top tier level, but maybe he wasn't making knives when they came up with that Trinity thing? Plus Mr George is just a really nice guy. Thanks again for watching and commenting
Holy crap - your ZT collection is fantastic, some old and new standards! 1) Thanks for breaking these 5 up - I get spots of time that are not linear to catch up on the 80-100 channels I sub to. 2) I washed a Hogue Deka after a camping trip to WY (but it popped out in the dryer and I was like "WTF is that...oops"), so that made me laugh, and 3) I see some swaps and trades between us in the future because we have similar tastes and hand sizes...and there were some you were like, "I don't like this...I don't carry this". ✌in 2025, and thanks again - I know how much labor it is to make these collections (which is why I all but gave in to doing them in 2023).
@@MitchBollig I figured it made a lot more sense to break these into bite-sized videos because not a lot of people have an hour and a half to watch one long video. And yeah I've purchased knives thinking I would love them, and then for whatever reason, I just don't, or something else is just better than it that's in the same category. When you have so many good knives to choose from it's just hard to decide which one you want to carry over another great knife. At this point in time a knife has to be pretty spectacular for me to be carrying it over something else. While I've never traded knives I would be up for it if there is something that is mutually interesting enough to swap. Thanks again for watching and commenting
It's like I was watching a collection of my knives. 😅 So much overlap with mine - very cool - I love the stories behind them.
@@MitchBollig I really appreciate the kind words. I first discovered you with your review is the Zermino Tyre. I see you have really tricked that knife out correctly
Man.... what a great review. I really appreciate you taking the time to make this, and share all your insights. I love QC, and I really love my Drift LCT, so I was definitely interested in this. You provided all the info and details I needed - thank you. Love this channel.
@@mstuehler I love the kind words ... Thank you. I started this channel to share my thoughts about knives, and it's not about making quick videos .... It's about talking about what I think. There are lots of channels that tell jokes or make videos under 15 minutes that are much larger, but I'm just doing what I want to do. I don't make a dime off of this and put a lot of time into it but I am trying to provide information. Of course we all have our personal bias and I try and make that clear in the video. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Man - this one was chock full of bangers! Love QC - one of the few Chinese makers that lead with washers versus just reverting to bearings for good action. Love what you did with the SHF - added comfort and looks! If I were ever to actually carry an XM-24, I'd have to do washers (or suffer the cuts of that guillotine. Thx!🤙😎
@@MitchBollig thanks for watching and your comments. Not to get technical, Quiet Carry knives are manufactured in Taiwan, but I hear what you are saying. I might have to switch the XM24 to washers ... Great idea. I had an Eklipse on washers but I switched back to bearings because of the action, but the 24 has such a heavy blade maybe the action would be great?!?
@@appalachianadvrider Oh thanks! I honestly didn't remember about QC being in Taiwan. As for the XM-24...I can tell you from experience it won't get great on the opening (until probably 5000 openings when the washers smooth out), but it will definitely save the knuckle of your thumb. 🤜🤛
@@MitchBollig thanks for the info ... Appreciate it.
Knice! I also take the Spydiechef more often than other salt series for camping (the Caribbean used to be my go to) but that blade, thin carry, pinch bolster at the front of the scales/frame, and the fact it's on washers make it a can't lose choice for a folder while camping. Thanks for the vid!✌️
@@MitchBollig it's a great knife ... I agree. And it disappears in the pocket
Is the spine sharp? To strike a ferro rod
@@EndlessLittleMoments not really ... the edge is slightly rounded.
@appalachianadvrider thank you, just found out about the firecraft that is similar but has a sharp spine, but this is definitely a better looker imo
@@EndlessLittleMoments check out the White River Knives Ursus Cub. I own all three of the knives we are talking about and the Cub sounds like what you are looking for. It comes with a ferro rod and a 90 degree bevel for striking. It's a good looking knife and around the same side as the Firecraft 3.5.
@@appalachianadvrider will check it out, thanks
@EndlessLittleMoments I have a fixed blade knife collection video with those knives in it. Check it out in my playlist. ua-cam.com/video/XYZKFEFwpdQ/v-deo.htmlsi=rL3fV7TdbD5b7LFp
Just got my large, love it. Also love the smaller thumb stud version. Had a bad bike accident and I need to cut food. My quiet carry goes everywhere with me. Wipe it down, wash it when I get home. Zero corrosion.
@whatsthemonsterbelow sorry to read about your accident. Hope you have a full recovery. That's the best things about these knives ... You can get away with no maintenance for a long time.
Mine is sticky and unpredictable. Sometimes it's smooth... Then it randomly won't budge. My fingers are torn all to crap.
@@WhoobieD Sorry to hear about that. I've come to dislike the brand. I have three of their knives and each one of them has an issue. That's unacceptable at any price ... But at almost $600 each ... I'm not buying another folder from them for a long time .
03:35 I think that's the Ranch bowie. Awesome collection - I look forward to catching up on all 5 parts. 👊🤙
@@MitchBollig hey Mitch I was just watching your video on the knife of the year ... Too funny that I'm watching your video while you are watching mine lol. I saw that contoured scale for your Project X and I'm jelly. I have the battle bronze the version of it's like not going to go for a natural ti scale. And you were right ... That big Hinderer knife is the Ranch bowie. Couldn't remember it at the time. Thanks for watching and commenting brother
The Attor is my new favorite We Knife. Dalibor’s designs are some of the best & the fact that he makes everything by hand is a testament to his skills.
@@shamusmcinky4882 I love the fit and finish, the blade shape and the design language. The clip kind of sucks though, so it's preventing me from carrying it more. It's still new and maybe it will grow on me. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Is that the standard lanyard hole on the back? Did you have to sand it down to get it to fit with the scales?
@@stevendeary502 it's an aftermarket scale but that's the standard lanyard hole / tube.
good lookin knife
@@alexdillon6980 I agree. In Strider style, it melts in your hand. Considering it's such a small knife I'm impressed. But it didn't come in sharp, but fortunately I had the ability to put a nice edge on it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Sweet!!

@@madman94 that knife is the Kunwu Padre, and I already talked about it in a previous video in this series (It's in part 4). I started talking about it again and then I remembered that I already talked about it, so I cut it out of the video lol
@appalachianadvrider ahh, cool, thnx for clarifying... I really like that model, catches my eye everytime, I'm mostly into customs/really high end production but maybe I should grab one regardless. Thanks again, enjoy your content 🍻
@madman94 I say in one of my collection videos (part 4) that if I had to choose only one knife that I own, I would choose the Padre (in an urban / non apocalyptic scenario of course lol). I like it's overall balance for how I use a knife ... For food prep, camping (feather sticking etc) and wet environments. I love the steel, that sheep foot belly, the pointy tip, and it's production values. Thank you for the kind words, for watching and for commenting! Happy New Year

@@HindererCollector41 wow ... I'm super jealous! I had to wait over a year to get one. Do you have a Ti scale for any of them? That's my next mission ... Get a Battle Bronze scale for this one and a great scale for my XM24
The PX is my favorite Hinderer by faaaar. It's the best quality I've seen with no rock or play, strong detent, good factory edge, etc. I've sold my other Hinderer because I never chose to carry them over the PX. I agree with the preference of external stop pins.
@the_swinging_axe appreciate you watching and commenting. It's a great knife for sure. Did you own an Eclipse? That one still has better ergos in my humble opinion
Wish that came in left, great looking knife!
@@jyknyc I don't think this company makes any left handed knives now that I think about it. Everything they do has a frame lock, and lots of their knives don't have any attachment points on the show side of the scale.
I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the collection series of videos. I used to be a huge ZT guy. And to still have a folder you purchased in high school is amazing. Thank you for sharing all of them😎🤘🤘
@@satudave yeah I actually purchased that knife in middle school but carried it regularly through those many years. Thanks for watching my friend. Since this video I have received three more knives (like you said in your latest video lol). Happy new year my friend.
Where did you purchase the scales for the Military 2?
@@Damen0530 They are made by Rockscale design and they have a website
@@appalachianadvrider Thanks!
@Damen0530 anytime brother
4:42 ahh that's why you said yesterday you don't like MC'nees knives 😅
Yeah there are a couple reasons. The 3" Mac 2 sliced my hand when I reached into my pocket to get it because of its weak detent. The 3.5" one is a guillotine. The pocket clip sucks and I get douchebag vibes from the maker. He made a different clip to replace the sucky one, but it's going to cost you. When they changed the lockbar design from a perfect spacing to having a huge gap, the maker was saying it's a better design. That automatic knife had a horrible point to it - it wasn't even pointy. These knives are almost $600 and I feel for what you are getting it's overpriced. I don't know - I'm just not a real big fan. Have lots of bad tastes in my mouth, even though I know the community loves this brand. I don't. I normally don't make value statements, but to top it off, I feel there are so many other knives that are a better value by far. It's just my opinion and I am in the minority and that's fine with me lol. Of the three knives that I purchased, they all had issues. Thanks for watching. I am going to tell you my unfiltered opinion and that the value I hope to bring to people that watch.
@appalachianadvrider Yeah man totally understand that! I hate soft detents! For a 600 dollar knife that's a freaking deal breaker!
Just got my black version today. The only negative I can find is that with my very large hands(I'm 6'7") my fingers catch the frame lock and apply pressure. That pressure adds quite a bit to the pressure needed to thumb stud deploy. So much so that I wouldn't recommend a slow rolling the knife open. It can slip and send your fingers straight to the blade.
@@chrishall1407 I hear that. I wear a 2XX sized glove and I'm concerned about grabbing it too high. For me I can flick it open just fine, but I certainly have to reposition my hand and I understand what you're saying. A little more real estate would have been good, but then it wouldn't be a "gentleman's" sized knife maybe?
@appalachianadvrider I guess the lct will be the next purchase. I had to get this first because I already have a lot of drifts. 😂
@@chrishall1407 love the LCT, especially using the reverse flick. I can't really thumb flick it (though I've seen others do it) but I can slow roll it out. I would say if you hate a hole opening then you might want to think about it. I love that it's much heavier and thicker in the handle with the contouring.
Let's go! 😁

@@THExDUDEx8624 I can understand why people would like tip down. I have no delusion that my opinion is the only one that matters lol. I will tell you that I had two Elites and the first one I returned because I would catch the tip of the blade with my finger when the knife was closed. The first version of it was really bad, but the knife they replaced it with is also bad, but not as bad. I actually have a slice on my finger that's still healing right now from that Elite as I was trying to pull it out of its pelican storage case for this video. I'm just not a fan of cutting my hand 😂 Thanks for watching and commenting
