    Just did this to my back up unit for the garage. I have a 14kbtu midea duo unit one 1 side of the garage but I notice in the peak of hotter days it struggles. My garage is right at the maximum the unit can handle at 500sqft. I had a 12kbtu Toshiba that wasn’t in use so I decided to use it. I realized quickly I needed to do the dual hose hack on it. That dam thing was sucking the door shut on the garage and making the garage door flex when it would kick on lol. After converting it to a dual hose design, it completely fixed it.

    unless you have a inverter technology ac the power consumtion in dehumid mode should be the same as the compressor can only turn on and off and instead of turning off at a set temp it keeps going until you turn it off. The only diffrence is that on most units the fan speed is locked to low so yeah not very much energy savings

    I just did this mod but instead of using foam I just duct taped the hose to the grill cover and taped off the rest of the grill. Used speaker gasket tape on the edges of the grill for a better seal. I'm just a little worried now that I could damage my unit being 1: how I just taped the hose to the grill and taped off the rest making the suction more focused on one area and 2: our summers can get up to over 110 F on really hot days. I don't want to damage this unit as it's my life line for summers

I wonder that in order to keep noise level down in a bedroom ('cause these portables are noisy), could the unit simply be placed outdoors on say, a covered deck and have the cold evap output air be gathered and ducted back through the bedroom window? What else would there be needed with this scenario?

    Thanks so much for this! I just ordered my first portable air conditioner and was super annoyed that it's almost impossible to find a dual hose version in the UK. Managed to get a good deal on a 12,000btu version with dehumidifier and heat functions and wondered "hmmm I wonder if it's possible to make it dual hose...". This looks great and you answered my main question which was how to work out where the 'air treatment inlet' is versus the 'machine cooling inlet'. I also plan on running measurements of how much energy the machine uses over 2hrs before and after the change. I imagine I will see a massive improvement. Thanks again for taking the time to document your progress.

      @@Roedy_Coedy I did this on my 9400 BTU De'Longhi earlier today, but it wasn't a success. Despite using a slightly larger hose for the intake, the machine sounded as if it was struggling. The outside air was only a couple of degrees warmer than inside, but the exhaust air was 10-15°C warmer than usual and the temperature of the cooled air, usually around 7-8°C, never got below 12°C. The room didn't cool down any faster either. I've thrown in the towel and gone back to single hose operation.

  • @MrBilld75
    @MrBilld75 3 роки тому

    Awww man! You're lucky, yours has a removable door for you to hook up that extra duct, mine doesn't. It looks the same though as yours, layout wise (evaporator up top behind a cover, exhaust on the right) and intake on the left, except my cover is a one piece unit. Still doable just a bit more work maybe? Update: less work actually according to what I did today, hehehe. I got a piece of rectangular ductwork (universal boot duct) 10 inches long by 4 wide and turns into a 5" hose. Then simply used 4 self tapping screws to fasten the 4 flaps I cut out of the boot and bent right over the intake grill and into the panel too and Gorilla taped around it. Done, half-hour worth of work, super simple and really helped the efficiency. Never had to modify anything really and it's super solid. It certainly has improved how horrible it was before, talk about bad, wow. Literally doing almost nothing. It's still not that great, but it's better, definitely much better. I can't complain, it was a free A/C unit and $30 worth of duct work and tape, so...... Lowered humidity in here by like 15%-20%, not too shabby. Takes the edge off, even if it's not really "cool", that's just how these work in larger wooms, which this is in. Quite large and doing my kitchen and hallway, so it's a lot to expect. It's more efficient now than with one duct, no question, it's pulling in serious air from outside and blowing colder air now.
