Neoconservativism: Myths vs. Reality

Neoconservatism and its followers originate primarily from the US. At its core, Neoconservatism is a lot like normal American conservatism, in that it favours a smaller state, and more emphasis on individual and personal responsibility. It is most well known however, for its particular take on foreign affairs, and America's role internationally. It is in this area that neoconservativism differs most from liberalism and other ideologies in and around the american right. Neoconservatives believe in the need to spread democracy and freedom around the world, and are willing and often actually keen to use military action to do this.

It is thus impossible to fully understand neoconservatism without understanding two key beliefs which undergird its approach to foreign affairs. The first of these beliefs is in American exceptionalism, which is the idea that American culture and values are and should remain unique and superior to others. When this is coupled with another belief, called unilateralism we can see where neoconservatism gets its particular worldview from. Unilateralism in the military sense, is the idea that countries should go it alone, and not wait for a broader approach that works with other countries, in keeping with multilateral organisations such as the UN. For example, Neoconservatism gained significant traction during the presidency of George W. Bush. Many of Bush’s advisors and policymakers were considered Neocons, because they favoured the invasion of Iraq unilaterally, in that they did not wait for a UN resolution explicitly sanctioning such an invasion.
Ironically given its adoration by elements of the American right wing, the roots of neoconservatism can be traced to intellectuals on the left. In the Cold War era, certain liberal intellectuals began to question the pacifism and counterculture of their peers, at a time when the vietnam war was growing more unpopular. This counterculture and failings in vietnam was leading to broader questions about the longevity of american world hegemony, how long was america going to be this world superpower, should america remain this superpower. Key figures like Irving Kristol and Norman Podhoretz helped an ideology to counter this worldview, rejecting this pacifist liberalism of the 1960s and embracing a more assertive approach to foreign policy and america's role in world affairs
Neocons are known for their interventionist foreign policy, which often involves using military force to achieve their goals. This has led to criticism that they're overly aggressive and willing to disregard international laws and norms in specific military interventions such as Iraq and in backing pro American regimes. Neocons are also criticised for being myopic about the unintended consequences of their actions and how other countries very different to America will react to the importation of specific american values and institutions. This could be seen as a symptom of neocons’ adherence to american exceptionalism. The fall of iraq into civil war and terrorism after its invasion and conversion to an american style democracy democracy is an example of this and the fact that neocons did not forsee this eventuality, is supposedly evidence of their naivety and myopia. However, Neocons would argue that their approach is necessary to protect American interests and to promote democracy worldwide.
Neocons are often also seen as focussing all their energies on foreign affairs at the expenses of problems back home. But neocons would argue quite strongly, that foreign affairs always have a bearing on domestic affairs, and that new tyrannies are at risk if america does not act. Along these lines Neocons are often keen to bring up the failure of the appeasement of hitler in the 1930s and the disastrous consequences it had. As another example of this, is the swift response from Western nations to putin’s invasion of ukraine, which has drawn praise from many neoconservatives, who see it as a necessary assertion of liberal values in the face of Russian aggression and the rise of another dictator on the european continent.
