We back! This tune I just know from the old time scene around Asheville area now. I believe it was popularized by Nokosee Fields recently. We both like playing it, and our friend Cade likes to play it. I am kinda playing it the way I imagine Kahle Brewer playing it, who recorded a few 78’s with Ernest Stoneman on guitar, I like his single-string-at-a-time style.

Yes, I blew it out with an air hose, brake-cleaned the nozzle, and blew it out again. Still had this problem. I can’t use a grease gun that needs this done to it often anyway. It just needs to work.

Good bowing exercise to practice, all you need is the two middle strings. You have to old the middle two strings down on the same “fret” with one finger

This fire 🔥
I’ve wanted to learn to play old time banjo since before you posted this video. So I can’t watch it first, I’ve already watched other videos. Am I screwed? Joke aside, I’ve learned exactly this a few years ago, I need to relearn it, fascinating stuff. Nice tone!

Sweet! Great chemistry between the two of you. What brand of guitar is that you are playing? Sounds really good. You can hear the bass notes cut right through the mix. Awesome. 👍🏻💖
Great video to learn from. I love how you demonstrate the usage of your pinky and the reason for using the pinky instead. Thank you for all you do! 👍🏻💖
let us see what the left hand is doing please
Very highly skilled right hand! Gifted.
I think my hand would cramp up 😅
formerly chuck version
Wow! Awesome! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💖 Thank y’all! ❤
love it
Guitar fades into audio insignificance when Banjo is in the house.
I hear music!
Very Nice tune & great sounding duet folks👍
Ihuuuuuuuuuul, amazing! Greetings from Brazil
I will try to play this on my viola...now...
Awesome! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💖
Love it! Thank you! ❤
Too short. Too dark. Greetings frae Scotland.
He blew it when he starts by labeling the strings from bottom to top. I’ve been doing that since I started 50+ years ago!
Definitely going to try
Just no. The FMB roll leads with the THUMB!
Thanks ,moe
Beautiful! Glad to see you again on here. Thank you for the upload of this beautiful tune which you played so well! ❤❤
Trick question? Bill Stepp's "Piney Ridge."
Oh nice. Heck yeah
I find their fiddling related, I think they knew eachother?
@@tite-r-tone8258 was about to post this too. Strong, Stepp, and Salyer all knew each other and referred Alan Lomax to each other in his Oct. 1937 field trip.
@@tite-r-tone8258 Great playing, as always.
Thanks for sharing.... I wish I would have learned this months ago. keep the good advice coming!
cool! was your fathers or grandfathers name also tommy magness ? i got an old fender nocaster with his name on it and looking for some pics and history. regards, tom
WTF??!! You have absolutely no idea who Earl Scruggs even was!! Earl was one of the most humble gentleman to ever live, he loved his fans, and, although soft spoken, was perfectly willing to talk about his style of playing!!!
Good deal ❤
Thanks for the tip I’m just beginning the banjo and I’ll be practicing these rolls
The good thing about bluegrass is every song sounds the same. If you can learn one you can play them all.
Hi Guy Can you make a Banjo cover for the theme music from the movie "Blues Brothers" Theme song Rawhide?? You would be the first one to do it and i would be grateful.
It's not a "banjo trick." It's an exremely bad habit to develop. I recommend beginning players to completely avoid this video.
Thanks❣️❣️❣️❣️
I like it just learning
Sounds sorta close to red Wilson’s version
good work out like the way you showed and explain it thanks .
nice one
Very awesome video! Y’all sound great together. I love the scenery too! ❤❤❤❤❤❤ Happy thanksgiving my friend! 💖
Nice playing. Which version is this Rob?
I heard versions by Marcus Martin and John Ashby of this Arthur Smith tune
I think it’s my dumbed down version of it. It’s sorta Marcus-y right?
@@tite-r-tone8258 after listening to Martin and Ashby, I think @gadaya's comment is on the mark. Definitely leans towards Ashby's version to my ears.
It seemed that your banjo was tuned $2.00 higher than mine... then I grasped what my eyes saw but brain didn't... capo ha ha
😊😊👍
I would claim that its preferable to play it IMTMTIMT, especially if you wanna go to high speeds like >170
in the first slow instruction of strings in this video(which I really like btw), are you repeating, 3-3-1-5 3-3-1-5, 3-3-1-5- over and over, OR, are going #3-3-1-5-3-1-5, 3-3-1-5-3-1-5, 3-3-1-5-3-1-5 over and over.. Do you see the difference ? which are you doing .... THANKS
The second one
@@tite-r-tone8258 thanks so much. you never mention that simple 3-1-5 which follows the 3-3-1-5, in your video. why? its a bit confusing. but I do like the ease of it. thanks.
That's called the Ralph Stanley style.

Zerk you, you friggin’ Lock N’ Lube!
Great to know. On a daily basis, I have to ensure that the oil levels on about 20 machines is sufficient, very few “grease-serts” that I have to check. I was wondering how/if y he mechanical version, such as the one you are using, was going to work well for what I need. Thank you for the information. Cool video. 👍🏻❤💖
A well seasoned skillet is key, too. Also, you can shred quite a few of those and store them in water in the fridge and they'll keep for a good while. Just a tip.
