FIRST Spice cake in The SPICE (Sustainable, Physics-Inspired Culinary Education) Lab!
The first day back to class at Appalachian State University post-Hurricane Helene was World Food Day and so I thought a Spice Cake from The SPICE Lab (Sustainable, Physics-Inspired Culinary Education) for my Physics of Food and Cooking class (PHY2220) would help ease us into the return to class (probably for me more than the students - cooking is mentally grounding!).
A return to "normal" feels nice, but is feels heavy considering how many people in our area are so far from any type of "normal." This event has only heightened my commitment to this work. Stay tuned for many more cooking videos to help us utilize the climate mitigation strategies that exist in our kitchens!
We are a strong, supportive community and I know we will recover, but this will take time, patience, cooperation … and a lot of cake!

This is a really, really good explanation. The only thing I would've liked you to add (or do a future video on) is why electron movement in the pan changes the temperature, and why wrapping a wire around a screw makes it magnetic. That may have made the video too long, though. I'm surprised this video isn't more popular!

You use a Pound of lentils. What is a pound of lentils? Do you convert the cost of the lentils to cost in British pounds? Why not just weigh the lentils in grams?

Thanks for sharing this. I invested in a flaker with the intent to make granola with whole grains like oats, barley, rye, etc. Your recipe is the simplest I’ve seen so far and easily adaptable for different types of grains. Well done. 👍

Thanks for explaining bulgar. My mom hosted two Ukranian refugees who have since moved on, and they left behind a bunch of bulgar and other grains that they would regularly cook with, which she gave to me for my family. I had no idea what it was much less how to cook it, so thank you for helping me! AND I think my favorite part of the video are the stacked Lego pieces used to create the comparison graph between grains. 😆

Manufacturer soy milk is not healthy for maintaining healthy weight, it does not digest well your cell does absorb, it holds oxygen and the red cells thinks soy has been used and stores soy product after digestion as fat. To be used later by our energy consumption IT IS BEST TO MAKE YOUR SOY MILK AND AVOID THE ADDITIVE USED IN PROCESSING SOY MILK

You should check out some Chinese kitchen staples, like multi-storey steaming pots (stainless steel) and these steel grippers they have that can grab any plate from a steamer. I would post some links but I think UA-cam automatically deletes them. I love your idea to use the aluminum foil, so simple! So happy to have found your channel and website through the solar cooker demonstration you did for the Uni. Your optimism is contagious! ❤
