Roland VS880, Repaired fader's, Time wheel and CF card upgrade
Переглядів 9533 роки тому
A description of my experience repairing a Roland VS880, Still a great machine, though with limitations. you can transfer tracks to a DAW 2 at a time, so mix down on the VS, then straight into the DAW. The CF card up grade was easy and is now a silent flash drive memory.
Nice video. Good work getting that old VS working again. I’m trying to do the same with a 1680. What CF reader worked for you?
Calling filter caps “power resistors”… wow 🤯
Now it's a no brand
I put in an Ibanez pickup. The stock was was much different
totally agree, i haven't put a video on for a while but i eventually put an iron gear overwound tele pick up in and the thing bites like a junk yard dog.
Brilliant
Hie, thank you for this really good video! could you share where you fouded the new capacitor?
Very nice video thank you. I have a VS880EX with a 50 Pin ribbon cable coming from the board. It goes into an adapter which receives the 50 Pin ribbon cable and also has a 26 female slot into which the original Hitachi HD is inserted. That HD is now bad What adapter do I need to go from this 26 pin female slot to an SD flash card please ? Thanks Rod Senior
What name or number is the time wheel pententiometer, as I have to replace mine and I want to get the right one. Or does one fit all.
The hum will probably be the big power caps on the right hand side near the transfromer. Replacing those should get it down/rid of it.
I just purchased this exact same guitar through Amazon total cost $90 us with shipping and sales tax. My thoughts are exactly like yours this guitar is great for the money and plays great. Going to get some steel wool tomorrow and get ii dialed in.
Really useful video. Quite inspirational. I'm having a go myself with a Glarry Tele.
Hey kids, don't take electrical advice from someone who thinks capacitors are resistors. And discharge them through a 10k resistor or you can damage them by pulling far too much current from them. Also leave them grounded while you work on the amp.
These amps are not Paul Rivera era amps.
Man youre constantly slamming an 60 dollar glarry on a 1000 dollar fender 😂
Well it's less $ than a custom shop relic.. And you get the same effect😜🎸😂
That hum is from the old electrolytic capacitors in the power supply section.
I wish you would stop banging those poor guitars into each other .
That's a great comparison. It's the player not the price point.
i got 2 of them, one standard ,the other a semi hollow , as you say, i had to do a set up , but now they are my fav guitars , i just love the fatter necks these have , most comfy i have ever played ,,, i even sold my fender
my first comeback to the guitar world was a glarry tele... and I think it is the perfect mod project! In fact because of it, I now build my own guitars. The Glarry is fully upgraded and a true keeper! I love mine
@5:30 you mean powered capacitors ! Resistors are not power retaining
Nice work, mate! though not to be too nit-picky, but this is merely the "The Twin" with red knobs, as there is also a black knob version. I think the red knobs get people to think "evil". the 1994 Twin Amp is the Evil Twin.
I heard red knob ones were called the evil twins because of their high voilume - don't know if it's true as the one I have was faulty from the get go and I've not got around to fixing it yet.
I will give you an "A" for your real good effort. Glad that you realize enough to know that those big "power resistor" things can contain enough energy to release a lethal shock, even after they have been discharged!!!! Those are actually polarized electrolytic capacitors. Think of them kind of storing a charge similar to how a lead acid storage battery holds a charge between it's plates. Capacitors are similar and have a dielectric between many plates. In the case of those filter caps they even may contain a chemical electrolyte like the storage battery too. Also note that the working voltage doesn't mean that is how much voltage is inside of it... It can be far greater but usually less after it is de-energized from the circuit. It is not a good idea to directly short circuit them to remove the charge. You can damage the caps, damage the other circuity. Particularly if there is semiconductors such as diodes for rectification or especially any modern switching circuitry that utilizes FETs or even fancier comparators, op- amps or digital processors. (Some tube amps have gone digital! As dick as that sounds-Hi!) Uh also you can actually burn holes or arc weld your wire to the chassis. It is much better to release the energy slowly thru a resistor! I noticed you mentioned some folks use a capacitor...... You want to use a resistor of around 100k ohms to discharge.... Come to think of it,,, perhaps you were just pulling the viewers leg and making fun with calling the filter caps power resistors and then just kinda throwing out there the thing about some people use a capacitor to discharge. Obviously you had to source those big cement filled power resistors that you replaced. Good job working on that PCB. ! Bonus points for the very smart suggestion about one hand in the pocket for safety just in case of receiving a shock. I am deathly afraid of electrical shock, in otherwords I am a big baby and hate being bitten. I am hyper-vigilant and have only been shocked three times in my whole adult life. I won't even submit to TENS therapy from a physical therapist nor any fetish mistress (well I thought that was funny joke.......) Anyways I am working on an evil red twin amp right now with some freakn noise somewhere in the phase inverter circuitry. It seems to be the back circuit board . As I flex it it seems to go away. Those darn jacks are really shoddy. But they seem as if the check out fine. I ran this amp in bench and it was great but put it back together and freaking loud him Isolated it to somewhere just before Phase inverter but not making headway except for chopstick to back board flexing. Took it apart resoldered everything and tested on bench and all good. Put it back together and it's bad as ever. Now it is noisy on bench too and I am flexing the board and chopsticking everything with no luck. All resistors check out and have clip leaded in caps for substitution . Nope! Ground loop? I dunno ! Thought maybe the bias but the voltage has very little ripple. Fucking amp!!!!!
Evil red knob twin amp fixed. Removed and resoldered or replaced all jacks and components upon the back board. I mean I removed almost every component except for resistors and cleaned up the board removed flux and resoldered everything back together. Cleaned up the wiring dressing and when I played amp it roars like a lion and when I stop it's quiet like a mouse. No hum and no buzz.
Tsk! You admire the finish and then diss it. Credibility gone. Nice try.
The finish out of the box is excellent, however on close inspection and with 40 years experience i can tell that durability is going to be questionable. as far as credibility is concerned...well... i am not actually concerned about that whatsoever.
100$ guitar seems better then the 02 epiphone sg I started on. Purple disaster that sg was. This glarry seems affordably excellent. 1000$ gets 10 guitars into musical hands for students.
na desire is if you can afford it surely, it needs a 5 1 is lame, kids havent got hundreds
The 1994' "Twin Amp" is the Evil Twin not the red knob "The Twin".
For reals.
The red knob Twin is just a regular POS!
thank you. I'm a red knobber myself and it's not evil. it's chaotic good!
I've got the 94 pro tube Twin and DAMN is it loud. Had it since 96 and really haven't been able to really use it. 2012 I bought a master volume knob that went in pre amp in and post out. Made it so I could use as much as 6 on the volume. I bought a Boogie S O B so I got a daily use amp and the Twin sits in storage. Still so clean it looks brand new.
Yep, you just cost me another 90 bucks for yet another instrument.. yeesh, in this room alone I have two mandolins and a Gibson archtop, never mind my music zoo in the other room. But man, now I NEED a Glarry Tele.
You can never have too many guitars.. Hope you enjoy it.. And thank you for taking the trouble to reply.. Keep playing.
Good job! Amp sounds great. I bet it's louder than heck and nice and clear. Good luck getting back in the swing of things whenever things start getting back to "normal". Oh yeah, hey thanks for the shout out. Great video. 👍
Thanks! Will do!
Mind officially blown. 🙃 Fantastic video. Thank you very much for showing all of the attention to detail that you put into this. Awesome logos!
just gave you a mention at the end of the latest video...cheers mate
Supercharged Glarry! I love it! Well done. 🙂
Thank you guitar slim.. By the way if you have any thoughts about a video you would like to see on the channel let me know and I will try do do that for you.. Kind regards Jon
To buy the cheapest guitar parts on the net,to build a guitar, will cost around 150 bucks, without the finished body,
Hi TJ Forgey, In the UK a complete KIt guitar with all of the parts supplied can be bought shipped and new for £69 (roughly $80) for a strat type. hence my comment regarding the excellent value of this guitar ( but that was at the time of making the video when I paid £56 for it). However, Glarry's are currently selling for between £90 and £130 (up to around $160 U.S) a huge increase in price in a matter of weeks. At this point the previously superb value of a Glarry is diminishing,.,there are a lot of alternatives particularly used ones at these prices. i just bought a used Aria Mac series for £30 ($50 U.S) Crazy deal right? these are a $300 plus guitar new and the build quality matches that retail price. I hope Glarry don't lose sight of the fact that we love their guitars because of what they offer to every type of guitarist for all kinds of various reasons... but at a price..Personally I don't think the build quality justifies a price north of $110.00, but hey maybe they are doing a better job now and producing better guitars for the price..who knows.. Any way thanks for the comment, always good to hear from you...
I'm not sure but I believe the necks don't have finish on them, but just a sanding sealer.i do like their lightweight, price, the bones of them are worth what you pay
I agree, once I slimmed the neck down I found exactly that. Just a sealing coat, but rough.. The frets are pretty soft as well.. Doesn't take a lot to shape them.
You should never use steel wool.without cover your pickups with tape,or even better, put the whole body in a plastic bag.if steal wool get on your pckups,or on your controls it can short them out.if you do get a short circuit, wool is extremely flammable.fyi
You are right, But my intention is to swap out both pickups, should of explained that in the video. so Gibson humbucker neck and a coil splittable stacked tele humbucker in the bridge. But 10 out of 10 for noticing..thank you so much for your comments..it means a lot to know people are watching..If you have anu suggestions for a video i am always happy to take your thoughts on board.. Kind regards Jon
neck pickup was taped
They sound a lot better once you copper tape the cavities, and adjust pickup height.
Hi TJ Forgey, I agree, I ordered some copper tape which never arrived so i went with shielding paint,,worked a treat..how are you getting on with your Glarry guitars? amazing value i think.
Both my glares had terrible frets.sprouted ,many too high or not seated down, the necks themselves were both fine.the tuners, work well after you tighten them up,and lubricate the nut
Thanks for the comments,, really appreciate it. In the UK the prices have risen so fast on these guitars now.. Asking as much as $150 now.. They were outstanding at the price before, but its getting to the point where there is a lot of choices. Regards Jon.
By the way TJ, got another video coming where I replace the bridge PU with a tele stacked humbucker coil tapped..
Brilliant video with Fantastic advice as always thank you.. 👍
My pleasure!
Looking forward to the next installment dude !
cheers mate...
Great video as always , I was amazed at the transformation. Cant wait for the next tutorial ..👍
Excellent
Brilliant piece of kit
Fantastic.. I will be investing in one..
Hey great video. Thanks. I got one of these coming from ebay. I been watching some videos about it. FYI, I seen this one guy do a video where he set this up to play. He kept it stock but put new strings on it. He went ahead and lifted the pick guard to see what's underneath. The neck pickup slot is humbucker routed IF you want to upgrade in the future. I wouldn't, but I did find that quite interesting. Oh yeah and it is indeed one piece of wood. Cool huh? Anyways, thanks again for the video. I just subbed.
Thanks for the post.. So glad you enjoyed it.. You are right there is a route for a humbucker under the guard.. In fact I going to do another video of the mods.. So it's getting a gibson humbucker at the neck. Vintage pickguard. Replacing the string trees, new stings. Better pots. Treble pass, and orange drop caps. A full on fret level and dress. You will enjoy this guitar. As cheap as it is, I havnt put it down.. Kind regards Jon.
@@therocknrollgearshow893 Sounds awesome! 😊
Hi ,,How are you getting on with the Glarry,, I am enjoying making some changes so far,, planning the next video,, poss two more on this guitar, then moving onto something else. actually really enjoying the guitar now an picking up out of choice...such great value..
It's great! Thanks for asking! So lightweight! I can hardly believe it. I usually play metal or heavy rock, but this sounds alright for that. Where it excels at is in playing acoustic/clean intros and parts. I really love it. Blows my mind how inexpensive it is. Take care.
Really very informative great advice
Really helpful advice. Thank you.. 👍😀
Glad it was helpful!
Well done Jon, love the hat, where can I get one?😆
I know a bloke who does those hats.. I'll put a word in lol
