Quick point on google maps: I used it extensively living in Tokyo, where it reliably tells you which train car to enter for transfers and other information. Not sure about Korea, but it google maps offers more detail and information on public transport than it does say in a city like San Francisco.

The reason is also that developpers are not well paid in japan, so i'm not surprised that outdated design from the 90s are still everywhere in Japan. With a low number of young professionals developpers it's logical that the old designers still make old design.

I never used the written directions, its always looking at the map and matching my current position wrt the map. They have already done a good job with that.

Never visited any bank website. India has moved to Apps. And we dont not visit website anymore unless it is specific. For Banking/Transactions we use UPI apps like Phonepe and Google Pay which gives us functions like current balance and ability to transfer money to anyone using phone number. Government websites are also designed for 1 time use so nobody really care about how it should look.

They should have just named all the streets. It would get backlash initially but just annotate them as unofficial names and encourage them to name the streets so they can be updated. Politicians love naming things. Putting up street signs with official names will help people navigate. Google could offer to pay for putting up street signs to smooth things over and at the end of the day its just the cost of advertising

Outside china, web apps that adapt phone and PC gain weight whereas in China super apps gain weight. It's interesting

I'm an Indian Web Designer. Here's the truth: Only govt agencies or large corps get to design such websites. And the people who do this is actually a Govt Employee who is in his 40s or 50s still living in the 90s when they learned how to create a website. They never update their skills with new trends or technologies. Same goes to large corps. Even an intern designs a better design, the manager won't approve it because his mind is still stuck in 90s. The people are not the problem here, we don't want messy info loaded websites, but we don't have any other options.

My thoughts as a white British person who recently visited the Chinese mainland for about a week. I was traveling solo, don't speak Chinese, and I'd seen screenshots, so I was expecting a painful user experience. WeChat lived up to my expectations on the sign up part, but aside from that absolutely seamless. Making payments, ordering a taxi, using the metro, scanning QR, and searching for miniapps to acomplish tasks became second nature almost immediately. I loved the way this one app (I never actually used WeChat, stuck to Alipay) was the portal to everything. It made navigating this utterly different culture just so much easier. I didn’t find the cluttered app design a problem at all tbh, and barely even noticed.I've actually really missed it since. I guess this is mostly personal preference, and the fact that I'm quite techincal and appreciate the scale and complexity of the underpinning tech helps a lot. I also read some setup horror stories that make me think I've been quite lucky on that front.

I’m a web designer and I had no idea I was already doing Swiss design. Not all in, but heavily influenced. I’m now adding more of this into my technique. I’m a huge fan on simple, to the point and easy to view websites.

You just wasted 10 minutes to prove a point which is not existed.. it's laziness of Indian banking systems to adapt the technology and build something these mfs are just don't care because they are tooo Big and PPL have to use them and they don't take online presence seriously.... Not here every where you go service are poor because they think spending in services is just another expenses and they emphasis on the product/taste more than service and sadly Indians are okey with it. Basically they just don't want to spend money.

The example you showed is of State Bank of India. It's a govt owned bank. It doesn't look cool probably on that account. It's same with any govt websites ( yes some of them don't work also). Check websites of any private firms. They are on par with global standards.

Its an equation of pay my folks. And most of the websites didn’t even hire designers. But as a culture we were never minimal. Just look at the ancient and medieval architecture.

That still doesn't explain how they used the scrappy method for the entire country? Did they literally research scrappy ways for the entire nation or maybe asked local users and businesses for their input?

CHEAP AND DOESNT WORK, I remeber one time like 3 years ago i had to login to pf website to transfer my pfs when i changed my company and the login text boxes were literally behind a solid red colored div which was acting as a divider of content, As a backend software developer with knowledge on dev stuff i was able to use dev tools to login by writing some jquery but its horrendous experience for everyone. even tax filing wesbite that was developed by infosys had issues.
