Where Do Billionaires Go to College?
I read a Forbes article written by Richard J. Chang last week. It detailed the top Universities attended by billionaires and I thought it was worthy to comment on. If you're thinking about college and shooting for the moon when it comes to net worth, you might get a kick out of this video.

The White Lotus S2: Why Albie Sucks
Переглядів 16 тис.2 місяці тому
I recently re-watched Season 2 of the White Lotus. It's fantastic. All of the characters are so well-written and well-acted by the cast. For some reason though, I cannot get over how irritating Albie Di Grasso is. I put some thought into it and in this video, outlined why I think Albie is just the worst. If you've seen the show, let me know what you think. Did Albie annoy you too? Or am I being...

A Quick Review of Dune: Part Two- Is it truly Epic?

A quick review of Dune: Part Two. I was admittedly a lazy man back in 2021 and I simply watched Part One on Max from my bed. This time, I had to go to a theater. Watch my little review (with spoiler warnings don't worry) to see if you should go see it as well. Can we just talk about how this movie feels like the biggest Sci-Fi epic we've had in years? It seems like it might even be better than ...

Does Christopher Nolan Work Well with Others? (Or Are His Best Movies the Ones He Goes at Alone?)

Nolan is such a beast. I thoroughly enjoyed Oppenheimer and it left a lasting enough impact to have me circle back through the rest of the Christopher Nolan archive and see what I could find. The whole thing had me curious about the level of influence that co-writers or original sou...
5 Reasons Why You Should Watch Sideways

Ant Man & The Wasp: The Worst Marvel Movie?

    I've been consuming entertainment for 50 years. I adore well-written, well-acted shows. However, I'm 5 eps in and I just CANNOT get into this show. Mad Men is 2 or 3 people talking in a room ... that's it. It's the same scene in a different room, over and over and over again. I have a very patient attention span, but this stuff is boring as hell.

    Both seasons make unusually (maybe unprecedented) statements about the glaring contradictions present in the woke worldview of younger Millenials and Gen Z. How none of the absurd virtue signalling and guilt tripping actually works in real life in any way but is all just so much stupidity and cultural rot.

    You lost at me at "Everyone Sucks".... The showcase is how the world they live in sucks... but is so familiar. Don is the real scoundrel and everyone else is trying get by or move forward, each trying to reach their own version of "The American Dream". I found Roger to be the most charming because he is the one that is totally honest about almost everything to himself, Peter grows to be a respectable man you even like. Megan is a simple tragedy that has happened a million times in the movie biz. Joan is simply awesome, has a good heart but deals with the reality of her situation. Allmost everyone on this planet will commit some kind of sin, and we had a Hitchcock style view of these characters. If everyone on sucks on the show then I argue that everyone on the planet sucks even more. There is a scene (JFK Shooting) where The Head of Television and The Head of Accounting have a heated argument infront of Bert. I never understood when Peter said: "Let me put this in terms you understand! The man had 4 children and a wife!". Now in my mid 40's I understood, he was a 1960's democrat blaming the others... The next day they had coffee together. GENIUS.

    The show is big. It's huge. It hasnt been even 9 years since it ended and people and journalists and critics are already considering it the best or at least top 3 dramas of all time. We dont need idiotic Gen Z or Millenials to make it "big"....it's gotten there already.

    It’s funny, I hadn’t thought of it! Succession really does play with height in some subtle ways and some not so subtle. Though I think there are exceptions and contradictions. Greg is the tallest, and initially the least culpable for negative behavior. But he gradually uses his status as a minor family member and gawky unassuming tall guy to eavesdrop and becomes the ultimate interloper into family and business political games. One note on Connor Roy, he’s interpersonally kinder even if he is entitled, but his politics are cruel, more a factor of his complete inability to support himself or work for money. I have to say, the show makes you like Kendall somehow. He does terrible things, but is such a tragic character. You can’t tell if the character is really good at playing along as what a CEO should be, or is actually maybe able to do the job. Of course, his blunders cost him dearly and it is revealed he cannot inherit the power Logan held because he simply didn’t have to climb up a mountain of skulls to get there, he was handed the scepter, but could hold onto it.

    • @hosangeles
      @hosangeles 3 місяці тому

      Great points! I was actually having this conversation the other day- all of the Roy actors, especially Jeremy Strong, breathe so much more life than expected into the characters and it definitely tugs with your emotions. I think some of the audience's fondness for Kendall just comes down to that the guy never catches a break throughout the entire series. Everything he sets out to do, he pretty much fails at. All of his wins are so short lived that you can't help but root for him to get one.

      I hear you. I really enjoy it as well (especially the moments that tease Coca-Cola throughout the season) but I just personally didn't remember a lot of discussion around the finale when it aired (as a non-viewer at the time) while I did remember (while also being a non-viewer at the time) Sopranos and GoT over-saturation in pop culture during the ends of their runs. I think my thinking when I made this video was that Mad Men's intro potentially foreshadows a much darker ending to the show that I see some had even theorized and while I watched the show, I thought to myself: "Wait, there is absolutely no way the show ends like that, it would have been talked about at nauseam/so controversial". Maybe I'm equating too many different things here but I hope that makes sense. Regardless, thank you for watching!

    Not so sure about the idea that height In Succession is meant to be correlated with "moral fortitude" or "empathy". Not only is Mattson's height often emphasized but so is Jeryd Mencken's. I didn't get the sense either of them were meant to be sympathetic characters.

    • @hosangeles
      @hosangeles 4 місяці тому

      Fair point- curious if you see the New Money/Old Money distinction that's been brought up in the comments as more compelling? The Pierce/Roy Families are all quite short and then Tom, Lukas and his co-workers, Greg, Josh Aaronsen, (maybe Mencken, I'm not sure what the source of his wealth was) were all tall. I hadn't really thought much about the Pierce family when this video was made as it was right on the heels of the series finale and they hadn't been heavily involved since season 2.

      @@hosangeles I do agree with the New/Old Money distinction, and I think it ties in even more broadly with the observation you make in the video about all of the Roys' significant others being presented as taller than they are. It's almost more of an Establishment/Interloper dichotomy. It's like the weak, complacent insiders are being besieged by more physically competent predators in a Darwinian struggle. (And after all, pretty much all of the Interlopers "win" in the end). And speaking of height, it only just occurred to me that Connor (fwiw, the tallest of the Roys) is fascinated with the infamously short conqueror Napoleon, to the point of... trying to acquire his penis. His manhood. And that later on, Logan berates him for it. Not to get too Freudian, but there's no way the writers put that in by accident...

    • @hosangeles
      @hosangeles 4 місяці тому

      Brilliant! I wish I had added the Napoleon obsession in this video. And I agree, I think over and over again, the writers/directors found ways to have fun with the heights of every characters in interesting ways.

    I was born during this time and I would be about Sally’s age. I used to go to my grandfather’s office when I was little and the office was exactly as portrayed here, typists in the middle, all women, and the men occupied the offices around the perimeter. I don't agree with this that only Elisabeth Moss has got a succesful career after "Mad Men". What about Jon Hamm ("Good Omen", "The Morning Show"), Kiernan Shipka ("Chilling Adventures of Sabrina"), Alison Brie ("Community", "GLOW") to just name few?

    • @hosangeles
      @hosangeles 5 місяців тому

      Great point! When I made this, I think I was thinking about how shows get green lit today with much bigger actors attached than what I remember when I was younger: i.e. Jason Bateman with Ozark, Jennifer Aniston with the Morning Show, Steve Carell with Space Force. I was trying to say that if a younger viewer turned on Mad Men today, they may not recognize too many actors in it. I can't imagine many people are massive Vincent Kartheiser fans for his work post Mad Men and would then watch the show for the first time just to see him. Whereas if someone who's a huge fan of say, Jeremy Allen White, for his roles in The Bear or the Iron Claw, he or she may revisit Shameless purely to see him. That's definitely a product of him being younger than much of the Mad Men cast, but I believe that is where my head was at.

    It definitely seems like the creators use height to symbolize old money versus new money too. The Pierce family in season 2 is really short as well but all the characters that have more recently come into wealth i.e. Greg, Tom, Matsson, are much taller. It really feels like the showrunners go out of their way to make the height of each character a part of the story.

    One of my favorites shows - I've probably seen every episode 3 times, others even more. When I watched the first 2 or 3 episodes, I didn't get into it because the people seemed fake. Then I realized it was about people and an industry that prized surface and image. Then I began to see complex characters under the surface. I'm 2 years older than Sally, so this reminded me of so many things while I was growing up.
