Second Stage Poultry Brooder Project
We recently turned a barn into our second stage turkey brooder. Our turkeys are a couple weeks old, and needed more room to roam but are not quite ready for the great grasslands on the farm. This barn was home to 900 market pigs in the 1990's. Then, used for storage of straw and equipment over the years. Now, we are happy to house some of our livestock yet again before the birds safely head out to graze and forage the pastures.

Our evening check on the mammas and piglets. This group of gilts (first time being pregnant, reserved from our own herd) are very tame, and embracing their motherhood role beautifully. Each litter size is fairly large, healthy, and the mammas are following suit too 🙂This is the first group of gilts that were naturally bred with our very own boars (reserved from our own herd.) We contribute much...
Taking Care Of Chickens, Everyday!
Переглядів 2012 місяці тому
Every day from May through October, one of our tasks on the farm is to water, feed, and move our pastured poultry. We're grateful for our new mobile hoop houses, 2 are built and functioning now! The hoop houses provide a more manageable environment for us, and play a crucial role for enhancing soil health through the purposeful movement of the birds. Join us for chores, we'll be doing these rep...
Building Mobile Hoop Houses For Chickens

Previously, our chickens lived on our pastures under mobile shades in the fields. The shades provided shelter, away from the weather and gave them breaks from the sun, but did not provide protection from predators. Hawks and eagles are of the best predators in the sky, and do live within the trees of our land. The shades also required us to feed the birds by the bucket, which is challenging whe...
Pasture Management On The Farm
Переглядів 983 місяці тому
Our pastures are growing; green blades are dancing in the wind, while buds form, waiting to burst with vibrant color. This time of year always feels so good. We allow our spring and summer pastures to rest and grow before introducing the animals, which is all part of the plan. Before the animals stomp their natural fertilizer into the soil while grazing the land, the soil must grow plants and t...
Baby Chicks On The Farm!
Переглядів 1923 місяці тому
Our day old baby chicks are settling into their new home on the farm. As their caretakers, our immediate responsibility is to make sure they know how to find their fresh food and water quickly. Baby chicks are curious creatures, and if anything new enters their line of sight, they investigate by pecking or scratching. We lay a roll of paper under the waters to encourage their instincts. The wat...
Chicken Brooder Update
Переглядів 1763 місяці тому
We are ready to welcome our first day old chicks to the farm! Our farm tackled a big project to revamp and improve our chicken brooder. The brooder is where our young chicks spend 2-3 weeks of their lives acclimating to life on the farm before heading out to the pastures. Baby chicks like warm temperatures, around 90 degrees. We've utilized a greenhouse, and this barn for years to welcome our b...
How does your farmer manage woodlands?
Переглядів 2124 місяці тому
If you are tuned into finding a direct farmer to grow and raise your food differently than the standard system, you may hear a lot about grasslands and pasture management. However, at our farm we also manage around 100 acres of woodlands to help us raise livestock. We work with the land, grass or tree covered, to promote a healthy environment for our animals, wildlife, and the land. It's not th...
Chicken Brooder Improvements

The chicken brooder is where we welcome day old chicks to the farm. Chickens have a more difficult time adjusting to fluctuations with the weather, especially at a young age. During the first couple weeks of life, they live inside a chicken brooder where we can keep a more consistent living environment for them. Our old barn is getting a facelift this year to help provide an even better living ...
Winter Work On The Farm

During the colder months, we make preparations for Spring projects on the farm. This year we will be expanding our acres of woodlands and pastures for our animals. With mild winters, the animals impact on the ground is heavier without a good freeze. We need to give our animals more room to roam to allow more time for rest of their current access. As the woods and pastures rest, the soil works i...
Sweet Lou's Kitchen - Cooking with Your Farmer

If you have visited our booth at the La Grange, Elmhurst, or Wilmette farmers markets - you know her well. Lou Ann is the 6th generation farmer, and 1st generation to trek miles from the farm to sell meat that she produces. I grew up on her cooking, and never ate a meal I did not enjoy. She earned the endearing name Sweet Lou from one of the best frequent flyers of the market. So here’s Sweet L...

Many different things on our farm contribute to the sought-after flavor of our pork - natural environment, animal husbandry practices, pasture and forest management, freshly grown and grinded feed, simple ingredients, a trusted and experienced butcher, and genetics. The most rare and distinct factor of them all may be the genetics of our pigs. We have saved female pigs from our own raised pigle...

Cooking With Your Farmer - Sweet Lou's Kitchen
Delightful repurposed home for growing turkeys b efore they go out on the range. Farmers are so clever!
can castrated pigs grow bigger and faster?
Does it get wet under the waters we need a new water system in our bruder but its always wet with other stuff also what bedding are you using
And why not go with bell waters like you have in the field
Thanks for giving your chickens lots of light, lots of room to move and play with the other chickens, and real earth for them to forage on. This way of growing chickens is beautiful!
Thank you for caring about the process, and following our farm's journey!
Зачем швыряете поросят Так не делается😮
Wow! You all work so hard.
thanks for sharing with us.
quite the project! look forward to seeing how it works out for you.
Looks like a lot of work but everything was so well done! Very awesome that the well being of the chicks as well as labor saving elements for the care-givers were employed here. I can't wait to see the next video with the baby chicks enjoying it.
They finally arrived today!! Video coming soon. Thanks for your encouragement and following along.
Bravo and congratulations! Looks like a warm and very comfortable place for the chicks.
Yes, the chicks arrived today and are really looking good. Will post another video soon.
So cool. Well done. Congrats on finishing such a major project
Thank you very much!
Now this is what sustainablility truly is. Not the definition being sold in the media.
how many acres is your farm?
Aprx. 250 acres, 100 of which is woodlands.
@@jakescountrymeats awesome, what a heritage
Your farm is a perfect example of how to do things right! Most animals raised for food will never enjoy a pasture or see a big blue sky. I love that you have considered not only the health and well being of the animals, but the land, and the lives of the woodland creatures too. Thanks for all you do.
Thank you for your family farm’s commitment to healthy meats and happy animals. Blessings to you.
Thank you for following along and your support!
Love seeing the work in progress. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for following along with us!

For 17 years, this family provided the nation's best protein to help me raise my family. Aloha from Hawaii and much aloha!!!
Thanks so much for your support over all the years!! You are truly appreciated :)
What a beautiful baby. Got her stick 😁❤❤
Thank you! As “city folk” these pictures are something that we rarely see. I truly appreciate the snapshots of your lives and dedicated work that enhances our diet!
We appreciate you!!
Why don't you just AI instead of having a boar it's very easy to do.
I love your on-the-farm videos, and this one about your breeding program is especially fascinating to me. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for following along and your support of our farm!

This is animal abuse
We door and they land on the fluffy straw meanwhile, pig flies in lands on the other pig
I bet Michael Bloomberg couldn't understand much of what you show here. Thanks for doing what you do.
One thing my mom used to do she didn't was to rub salt on the inside of the bird before stuffing it. I think that may help reduce bacteria also.
How many piglets in a sow's natural lifetime? forget to ask about boar's virility during his lifetime? Oh, and market weight?
I’m not much of a meat eater but I found you at the Farmers Market in St. Joe. The pork is amazing and I will not buy meat in grocery stores anymore.
Video reminds me of the saying that a puddle is a small body of water that attracts other small bodies!
How do you know it's painless? I just castrated 5 males and they told me it was painful.
I hope you don't get a visit from the Child Labor Police division of our omnipotent government(s).
Yea, I hate working, too. :-)
You send this to my wife Diane & I enjoy watching every one of the videos. You do such a fine job & we enjoy .Thank You, Gib Ende.
Loved all the information - thx for sharing. Btw you have the best office space in the world.
Absolutely not painless however it has to be done
What’s the name of the shelter
I eat meat. I plan to keep eating it. At the same time I assume those boarettes are screaming because it does hurt to have balls sliced into, twisted and torn off. Doesn’t stike me as painless but it’s gotta be done because what’s the alternative, a litter full of foul tempered testoterone-smelly males fighting each other, tearing up property and inbreeding with any available female and you can’t even eat the meat it’s so tough and rank? So, yeah, you PETA people can keep your sanctimony to yourselves. I’ve never met a vegetarian or a vegan who wasn’t hollow-eyed and moody so, NOT impressed.
Necessary or the meat will taste sh*tty. Wouldn't be palatable. Also no unauthorized piglet making!
Disgusting!!! how dare you call it painless?? you cut off their f*cking testicles and call that painless!! they were screaming in agony and you grab them by their legs as if they are objects and not living beings. nothing is right with the meat industry and other animal industries in all totality. there's still time..... change your ways give up meat. an animal's life is more precious than satiating your tastebuds.
This was a good video. You were quick ans fast. I have seen other videos where people take sooo long omg 😢
Pigs have no rights whatsoever. They are meat animals. Use them as such.
animals are not for humans to use and and to satiate your tastebuds. change your ways. give up meat you'll feel better about yourself
@@rex_8618our teeth are designed to eat both plants and animals. I dont agree with intensive farming though. All of our food comes from intensive farming. A lot of our food lacks nutrients because of it. Billionaires and farmers were never meant to be one, let me tell you.
@@rex_8618I agree even though I do eat meat sometimes but I am ok if I don't ever have it again
@@larrydarnell6522not all of us even have our teeth anymore so whats it matter
@@larrydarnell6522 Of course you're gonna throw all your excuses. Your comment about pigs was beyond barbaric and disgusting. You should be disgusted at yourself. Besides, vegans are healthier than non vegans and it's also more environmentally friendly and sustainable. There's literally no reason to not be vegan other than satiating your taste buds.
Yummm!!!
It's pronounced Wooster, but drop the R so it's Woostuh, shear, like shearing a sheep. Woostashear sauce! It's good wrapped with some bib lettuce, very very finely sliced sautéed onions and a dash of hoisin sauce. You can get the sauces at Krogers. Good to see you trying new things! And it's great to see Nate taste testing ! With love and Aloha from logan square!
Looks delicious! Save that fat, render, is great for soups, rillettes, use instead of hydrogenated veggie oil for great flavors and nutrients
You better Hope Karma isn't real 😅.. But that's what Animals are here for, Lock them in a cage & Butcher the baby's.. Definitely American 😂😂. 😊
Hi. I'm always looking for new recipes. I never have oyster sauce either 😯 New subscriber.
