How I Built a Garden Potting Bench with Sink for My Kitchen
In this video, I'll show you how I built a simple garden potting bench that doubles as a temporary kitchen sink base during my kitchen remodel. This isn't a step-by-step tutorial, but rather a journey through my process of building a functional sink base using common lumber on a small budget.
Throughout the video, I share tips and tricks that I picked up along the way, helping you tackle similar projects with confidence. Whether you're in the middle of your own kitchen renovation or just looking for a creative DIY project, this video has something for you.
🔨 Materials Used:
Common lumber (Untreated 2x4x8)
Basic hardware (2" Black Outdoor Screws, Star Head)
Miter Saw
Orbital Sander (with 80 and 220 grit pads)
Impact Driver & Countersink Drillbit
Behr Premium 1 qt Clear Transparent Waterproofing Exterior Wood Finish
SIMPLE DRAIN (1-1/2 in. White Rubber Threaded All-in-One Drain Kit for Double Basin Sink)
For all other Supplies: amazon.com/shop/capturingwonderland
🌿 What You'll Learn:
Creative use of materials for a cost-effective build

You are adorable. :) Keep doing what you're doing.
Thank you so very much!
Thank you for your helpful tips!!! So so helpful♥️ Does it have to be hot water? We have a septic tank so I’m going to try with a container method. In that case do you think it will work with cold water?
I don't think it has to be done with hot water. I think the cold water will work just as well. Good luck with your project!
im very new to homesteading and trying to get started. I love the way the video is put together and in parts that make it easier for me to navigate.
@@Crxwbrxxn thanks for that! I tend to think exactly like this so I'm really glad it's helpful to you. I'm still on my journey towards homesteading as well!
Thanks for making this tutorial, I’m glad I found it. I want to use your method to do a Pink Floyd themed wall.
You're welcome! That sounds very cool!
Can you use brown sugar and if so, what are the ratios?
You could! It would be the same ratios, it will just end up with a more caramel-type taste due to the molasses in the brown sugar. I bet it will taste very rich and deep. You should try it! Report back!
😂 I just did this 😂 …. Then I found your videos! I used a brick stencil, but plan tape next time. And guess what paint I used? Behr, Dove. 🕊️ I can’t make this up!
GREAT MINDS! lol That's so awesome. I still absolutely LOVE it. It's been up for a year now and the wall in my girls' room has held up just as well. How funny we also chose the same paint color!
OMGoodness your ideas are amazing 🤩 ❤
@@racheljohnson4274 thank you 😍
Try adding a decorative piece on the bottom to lengthen them. A ruffle a piece of trim. Something that goes and coordinates but will look 👀 intentional and not like you are trying to cover up a mistake. Even a contrasting colour or pattern of fabric.
@@cookiemonster6401 good ideas!
Wow you are amazing. It’s so beautiful. I love those vintage posters. PS your music is perfect with this craft, love it… one of these days I would love to do something like this… thank you.
Thank you so much!
Hi, I loved your painting the trim designs as I am not a carver either, but then I work in words not paint. lol. I am also a home education teacher, but my baby is 30 now. Anyway, I am working on two corner cabinets that I got from Facebook for my Breakfast room. I wanted the room to look like it has a bay window and the corner cabinets on either side of the center window is just the ticket. But what I finally found were two rather plain corner cupboards from the 40s or 50s. Now, I want to make them look Eastlake or Edwardian since I live in an Edwardian hotel (various parts of it were built between 1888 and 1903.) I am hoping to add something to them the pair to dress them up and also to make them look built in and taller. I am trying to muster up using the table saw, not quite there. Was thinking of getting some trashed Eastlake chairs and using the decorative tops at the top of the cabinets like a crown type thing. If I sent you a picture, would you give me some ideas of what I could do to them without trashing expensive Eastlake chairs? You seem like you would have great ideas. i loved seeing you work on your project while you daughter worked on her schoolwork. Reminds me of how much I loved being with my girls. Usually, I was sewing and schooling, but same idea:).
Sure! Send them my way, go ahead and email me info@capturingwonderland.com and I'll see what I can come up with. I have actually found "crowns" at flea markets all by themselves at times, but you could also make your own fairly easily with a jigsaw which is way easier than a table saw. I actually made a crown for a piece of furniture in another video, if you want to see how I did it! ua-cam.com/video/FE72QMgd8OU/v-deo.htmlsi=UbAKR1GRhwnkeX-q
How did the paint last on a kids floor?
So far, pretty good! There are only a few places where some of the paint has come up, but that's because boys are kind of rough I think and drag stuff along the floor. ha
Great method. Sterilize the funnel
Good idea! I didn't think of it at the time, but probably really beneficial!
Great job!
Thank you so much!
Will the stripper damage the mirror if it get on it
Nope, it shouldn't! The mirror front is just glass. I was definitely not particularly careful when applying the stripper and I had zero issues.
Hi! your work is beautiful! I am trying to get onto your website to download the cards for the card garland, but I am unsure if your website is working. Do you have another way for me to download the alice in wonderland decor to print

Thanks so much! I'm so glad I could be helpful. I personally love all of these things haha... it's hard to choose which ones to use and where, too many choices. <3 Good luck on your decorating journey!
Do you still offer the stencil download?

I love your floors. It look beautiful. I think you did such a good job. It’s very eclectic and it looks like a New York apartment entry.🙏❤️
Thank you so much! They looked really cool.
Nice video...I am doing this now and painted the tongue-groove first..then installed the whole board. Then quick paint roller for the final coat. Either way it is a lot of work. :-)
That's definitely one way to do it! I feel like using a paint sprayer would still be the easiest if I could ever get over the fear of using one lol.
Just found you when I was searching for a DYI scarecrow frame from Sleepy Hollow, and I absolutely LOVE your channel. Looking forward to plowing through all your other videos, after I'm done rewatching this one six thousand times 🤩
Thank you so much! This was by FAR my favorite Halloween theme!
Greetings from England me Deario! Useful, informative vid,thanks- do you know if this technique would effect any glue joints at all? I want to do this to a solid body electric guitar.x
I think that probably depends on if the glue used was water soluble or not! It isn't a LOT of liquid, but I couldn't say for sure unfortunately! The only thing I could say was it didn't seem to affect these joints at all, not even the original stripping I did to this piece with oven cleaner and a hose. And I am betting this dresser's joints were put together with wood glue which is usually water soluble. You should also be wary if your guitar's wood is laminated or solid.
@@CapturingWonderland thank you, that's given me food for thought.take care x
@@sharonlee4773 You're welcome! Good luck with your project!
@@CapturingWonderland many thanks, have a blessed weekend
Insanely fabulous!!!
Thank you so much!
To keep the patina warm water and a soft toothbrush, then cloth dry. When dry use a.cloth rag and wd40, I use a circular motion. Boom, keep the great look of aged brass, but it has an elegance to it like it's traveled the world.
You know, thank you, I do think I prefer the aged brass look to the brand new brass look!
I'd really appreciate any input you would have for me. We are building a house on a strict budget. The electrician just blew the budget for the trim so I'm only going to have him do the stair treads and doors. Any information you can provide to help me make quality floor, and window trim for new construction I would appreciate.
I am not a professional so I don't really feel comfortable giving you advice on that except that I know many professionals, my brother included who has worked on million dollar homes, uses MDF for trim work and swears by it.
Excellent workmanship for an amatur! You should be very proud 😊
Thank you very much! I was very proud of this piece, still love it.
In your video, the angle of your camera . Does not show the wood work above your window. The change is not obvious to me. I have very traditional woodwork. I ‘d like to relax
Not really sure what any of that comment means lol. I had zero trim above or below or around my windows before this process. So it went from no trim to trim.
Great stuff. Thank you 👌
You're welcome!
@@CapturingWonderland Your demonstrations & methods are crystal clear - Smashing 😊 Made a batch of vanilla extract as per your instructions in early February this year, using grain alcohol I’d ordered from Scotland in January (plus distilled water)- really scary abv 😮 it’s doing it’s thing on a specially designated shelf in my garden shed, I intend resisting temptation, leaving it to melch for as long as possible … I have some grain hooch left over plus x 5 madagascan pods , so definitely concocting your vanilla syrup recipe next 😋 Thank you so much for the tips - much appreciated 🕊
@@MsJellyEggs You're so welcome! I am using my vanilla with grain alcohol batch right now and I can tell you it's the absolute best. My batch using spiced rum is almost due as well and I'm super excited to get to try it this holiday season in baking! Good luck with your vanilla experiments!
Glad you roughed up the bottles and labels. Would like to see the corks roughed up too. I have several real old medicine bottles and the lids and corks have all kinds of residue on them. Also maybe try less water in the tea and brush it on and let it sit for a day or so. Its what we do to make the plastic beads look like bone. Just some tips, I love you attitude and outlook.
Good idea! I don't know why I didn't consider that. I have quite a few old bottles, but alas none of them really had their corks left in them that I recall. But I would definitely do that in the future! Thank you so much!
go to habitat for humanity. may find great selections.
Very true! I only have one in my area, however, and it isn't close. But it's a great option!
magnet is a good way of telling brass from steel but it won't work when the base metal is pot metal that is brass plated. you at that point need to scratch test it on the inside so the scratch is not apparent, if its gold color, its brass, if its silver color, its pot metal.
I have learned this as well. Thank you!
Just did that scratch test on what I thought was a solid brass lamp only to see silver shining through. I thought I had scored good, dang it!
@@rhondashotwell7358 you do have to be so careful! most of them were made like this not to fool people but to not waste brass i guess and imitation brass was accepted. i have also been fooled! i did the scratch test which was not deep enough and only scratched into the brass plating. only when i was removing the cast shade did i see the silver pot metal inside. threw it all away, cant stand that soft material that goes grey almost instantly!
@@ronitsingh85 Thanks! Mine is a nice burnished looking brass, and I know it's vintage by the plug, also it's very heavy. I took the bottom off, and did the scratch test inside. I do like the shape, and will have the cord and wiring replaced, and find a suitable lamp shade for it. Had I known it wasn't brass I probably wouldn't have purchased it, but as it is I only spent $14.99 for it at Salvation Army. Now I need to find out what type of metal it is so I can clean it properly, and make it look nicer. I think I will call some place local, and see if I can take it somewhere to find out what it is, and what can be done.
@@rhondashotwell7358 right, good to play it safe but most likely its pot metal, - an alloy of zinc, tin and lead. if it had iron in it, it would be magnetic. I cant stand this alloy, no matter how good the design is. It was and still is the alloy to use because it has a low melting point and most important, it casts very accurately! the price you paid was not too bad. See what can be done about. I got a bankers lamp with the green shade for $8, it looked modern but I was sure all the shiny brass looking bits was brass, did not care if portion of it was not, turns out every bit on it is brass!!! and its modern, maybe from the 70s or 80s? but not vintage like from the 40s or 50s. although someone on FB had a nice vintage one for $10!! too far from me to go and get it. I love milk glass shades, especially the ones that fully enclose the bulb, you get a nice white or warm white glow from it, looks so nice and magical. I also collect the vintage light sockets and switches, bakerlite material makes them shiny and most are art deco and ornate. I know reproductions are made but I have found the real deal so I am ok for now. braided twisted cable look super nice on these old lamps. and like you said, by your study table, bedside, shelf, anywhere, these add and enhance the beauty while being functional.
Can I use regular frames for this pr does it have to be certain ones?
You can, but you want to make sure they aren't really heavy or reinforce the little screw eyes with something like e-6000 so they don't fall off the wall.
8/24,, thanks for your video, it’s been a great help. I was able to find the Zinsser wood bleach on Amazon. I’ve been sanding & trying to remove the very last of any stain after stripping. Will start the bleaching in the morning. Thanks
You're very welcome! I hope it is helpful to you!
That milk glass bowl with Buffalo would be good for salt next to stove so cute !
You are so right! I don't know why i didn't think about that!
Beautiful!
Thank you!
I would put cafe curtain hangers at the top of the curtains and give it a little more length or add some fringe lace to the hem.... but with the tie backs it looks really nice. great job...
Thank you!
i love the name of your handle. I wanted my side yard to reflect Wonderland with bricks painted as books and secret pockets of the actual book.
That is such a CUTE idea! And thank you!
Use windshield crack filler
I have no idea what that is or that it could be used to clean brass. But I'll look into it, thanks!
I think he (or she) may have meant using windshield crack filler to repair the crack in the green lamp shade, or to keep it from worsening.
@@hillsidedweller656 ooooooh yeah that makes more sense haha.
