Why We SPEND Soo Much TIME On MUSIC!
I thought using insulation batts was crazy as soon as I heard of the idea. I've worked as a painter and a roofer and we will not touch insulation batts without the right gear and a hefty bill being paid! Initially I thought I'd cover them with several layers of thin quilts/doonas to trap the fibres, but in the end used down filled quilts and pillows to fill the panels as it just seemed stupid to hang insulation batts on the walls of a small room I'll be singing in and working in for hours on end, I just couldn't do it! Our local Op-Shop (charity store?) has a Dog Bedding bin where they sell pillows, quilts, cushions and blankets that aren't deemed to be good enough quality to charge a decent price for, so it was a cheaper way to go anyway. A bit heavier perhaps, but I feel a lot safer.
I'm a guitarist. I've always tried to get into audio but for some reason it becomes so difficult to even record a single riff and make it sound good. Spending HOURS tweeking, changing tempo, choosing the right plugin and I eventually gave up. I managed to make some mixes, but they're trash, honestly.
Thank you kind Sir
Hey 1st 💪thanks for your important contribution to the universe. I'll watch your video now!🤣Everything happens for a reason man😃I worked in warehouses most my life, your worries are well founded!!! But that guy cared. That's the take away. Ya gotta CARE!!!!
Thank you so much! I appreciate you. You are so right. The difference maker is very often the one who cares the most that it gets done right!
I used to ask salespeople questions I already knew the answers to, to assess their product knowledge. I don't do that much anymore because I mostly buy things online.
I just did a deal as a real estate agent: I had a listing with a bidding war. We got at least 6 different offers throughout a day. We got one towards the end that was way higher than any of the other ones, the seller said he would sign, except we wanted them to change the wording of a stipulation and we wanted more earnest money. We didn't sign their original offer, they agreed to make the changes verbally and resubmit their offer, and while we were waiting for them to come back with that revised offer, a previous offer called me and I just told them yes or no what I could take to me seller for him to consider. They followed up with the best offer yet. I told the people working on their revision- "hey, we got another offer". They just submitted their offer which was under the brand new one, so we signed the brand new one. The agent who lost the deal was irate! They said they would report my violation to the commission: the violation being that I was "in negotiations" with them, but I accepted another offer while "under negotiation". We didn't sign anything, we never sent them a counteroffer, all we did was verbally agree that we would sign if they made those changes, but because there was nothing in writing, I was not "in negotiations" with them- we were just talking.
King🙌🙌🙌 im here from 2024 till today 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you
I think i have this issue. I use the rokit8s and I do often have to check the mix in the car multiple times. Thanks for this perspective boss
I hear ya. It's taken me a while to realize how much I don't like my current speakers. I tried to work with them / around their problems, for a very long time. For me the NS10's were much less of a learning curve. I realize now that the greater the learning curve for a speaker, the more it is telling you that this particular speaker doesn't work for you and/or doesn't work in your room. It could wind up being a huge help to add more room treatment (or if you've already done that), try a different speaker.
@customcutstudios I barely have any room treatment at the moment. I may have to try some different speakers, I'll put NS10s on my list to try
@@FoePoundProduction totally your call on what you want to buy, but in my view, if you have barely any room treatment I would start there before you buy speakers. It’s not the fun thing to purchase, but even the best speakers in the world would sound like bad speakers in an untreated room. That said, NS10’s are good because they don’t create a lot of problems in the low end, because they don’t produce a lot of low end. So they might be good to use while being able to switch to your rockits to check the low end. PAZ is analyzer is very helpful to use with NS10’s also to make sure you don’t have anything too hot below what the ns10 can reproduce.
@customcutstudios thanks boss, that's helpful. I'll work on my room 1st
i'm going to mix 75% on airpods pro with hearing aid
sounds like a plan!
You sir are a YT GOAT!!! Thank you for your service
I seriously appreciate you saying that! Very happy to share what I've learned with you. Thanks for being part of this and letting me know you dig it!
Good advice, but I gotta say, properly using reference material solves a lot of these issues if you don't have the budget for new speakers
you are right in that reference material can definitely help in all cases. Finding the right speakers that work with your ears, and your taste, doesn't mean you can eliminate references. And vice versa, using reference material doesn't mean that any speakers will work for everyone.
wow pure gold!
Thank you! I'm very happy you connected with the video, and I appreciate you being here
I mostly mix on my Genelec monitors. It is not that I consciously tried to learn them; I have been in love with Genelecs since the first time I heard them in a studio, and even more so when I started working with them. I know what I like, and I trust that when I mix on them, I make the right decisions. Genelecs feel like an extension of my own ears. I trust my instincts. If something sounds off, I do not need to overthink the monitor’s frequency response; I just know it is wrong. Period. Recently, I had a client come in to review the final mixes for seven songs I produced with them. Some of the sessions involved over 150 tracks. I knew the band members would not have a solid understanding of the technical side of things. They were coming in with sound fatigue from gigs and little to no ear rest. I expected them to suggest tweaks, but they were all over the place, sitting on the floor, in chairs, standing, constantly moving around, and coming in and out of the room. To manage this, I invited a mutual friend who is an experienced session musician to help. His role was to get them to sit in the right spots or near my position when they had feedback, especially if they said things like, "Turn that part up; I cannot hear it," or "It is too loud here; turn it down." He would point out that their perception might change based on where they were sitting, saying something like, "I was sitting there earlier, and I could not hear it either, but from here, it is clearly audible and sits perfectly in the mix." When I send mixes for revision, I want instant feedback, and I expect them to listen on multiple systems they are familiar with. I also ask them to tell me what systems they will test the mixes on so that I can check the frequency response and anticipate the type of feedback they might give. But if they are coming to my studio to discuss final tweaks, I will not make changes unless they are sitting in the proper listening position, or at least close to it. I will not entertain feedback from people sitting in random spots, facing the other way, or constantly shifting around. If they insist on changes despite these conditions, I make it clear that those tweaks are on them, and I will not take responsibility for the outcome. Furthermore, if they ask for additional revisions after agreeing to the mix in my studio, I charge extra. I am not going to waste time fixing problems they created by ignoring the process. And if they are paying to come back repeatedly only to make the mixes sound worse each time, I will keep taking the money, but I will have my credits removed from the project.
The way we hear ‘naturally’ isn’t a fixed standard. There are many influences that change our perception. Everybody who gets older knows you’re losing high frequencies, what’s acceptable high end for older people is piercing ringing high frequencies for younger people. A little bit less highs for older people is no problem but too much highs for younger people makes them skip the song instantly 😅
that's an interesting perspective, but I don't believe my taste in music and how I like things to sound has really changed that much over the years. I've definitely gotten more tuned into what I like and don't, but it's actually most of the same things. I'm not "young" and I for one can't stand too much high end. It was the same when I was younger, except now tinnitus makes it super clear when theres too much high end in something as it kicks up and bothers me relatively quickly. I think the fact that everyone hears so differently, and our preferences in what we like as mixers is so vastly different that this is more the driving factor. Hearing definitely changes slightly over time, but it's actually not as much as you think IMO. Sure it may get duller in the highs like CLA says he can't hear tamborines anymore lol, but our tastes of how we want our speakers to sound when things are right, will be the same or extremely close today, as they were 10+ years ago, and will be 10+ years from now, if you ask me.
@ If you have a hearing test from when you were 16 and one from now you definitely can see the difference. Unless you were very careful with high volumes and used hearing protection when exposed to loud noise there definitely will be a difference.
@@Chaos-DynamicsI’m not saying there won’t be a difference. I’m saying that IMO the kind of difference that would happen from age and life, is not the kind of difference that is substantial enough to change one’s taste of what they like Or don’t from a mixing/critical listening perspective, in most cases. It’s like if you put a few tiny dark spots on a clear piece of glass, it’s not gonna change what you consider to be beautiful or not. It’s just not a perfectly clear piece of glass anymore. Barring any serious trauma, the changes in your hearing won’t affect your preference for taste. Where as if we swapped ears (you and I), that would have a much greater effect on what we like or don’t
I get your point but taste has nothing to do with what we actually hear or don’t hear. Hearing loss or damage is a factual matter and you simply won’t hear certain frequencies anymore. We can’t make mix decisions on things we can’t hear. Yes we can run on one leg but pretending that we have two isn’t making us any faster.
@@Chaos-Dynamics we pick what speakers we like based on our taste and what works for our ears based on what translates. The problems we have or don’t are included in that. The problems we don’t have yet, we can’t possibly account for. So I don’t really get the point of what you’re saying. Our ears will change over time so don’t pick speakers that match/compliment your taste at the moment? Makes very little sense to me. No one is picking speakers based on what they can’t hear. They are picking speakers based on what is presented to their ears, and whether or not they like them / whether or not their mixes translate when using them. At least that’s how it should be done, IMO. We all hear differently, so we can’t trust speaker reviews for anything. That’s the entire point of this video. Worry not about how your ears may change in the future, worry about how you hear today so that you can get work done today. Protect your hearing. Work at low volumes, so you can preserve your hearing. I love the same music today that I liked when I heard it in the 90’s. The way these mixes sound is still amazing to me, and during that time I’ve experienced serious ear trauma. It doesn’t change anything about what I like or don’t like. It changes what I hear, but not enough to have an effect on what I like.
Thanks for this! I just ended a two year rabbit hole on room treatment, speakers, and room calibration. I had Focal Twins (ST6) with a Sub6 for the vast majority of the time. I had a 10db null around 100hz I COULD NOT get rid of no matter what I tried. TransAudio offered me a demo of ATC SCM25’s. 1st measurement with Trinnov the NULL was all but gone! Now I am +/- 4db across the board. I was amazed how a different set of speakers could measure so different!
Thank you for sharing this! I've found this to be very true also. Speakers can have vastly different sounds, those ATC 25's are among the best speakers out there, and even if the change in the room issues is minimal, your ears maybe more suited towards working on the ATC25's. More dealers should realize that demo'ing speakers is the only way anyone can make an informed purchase on them. I appreciate your experience here!
@@customcutstudios You're welcome! Another thing that amazed me is how much the room comes into play! I thought for sure that I would have to use my sub with the SCM25's to extend down to 30hz. Makes logical sense right, with the specs on speakers rolling off at 47HZ? WRONG! In my room the ATC's are right up against the front wall, and I'm getting a load off the front wall. Based on this and my RAW Trinnov measurement, I am hearing down to 30HZ -6db, and I don't even need my sub. I never would have thought this was possible with SCM 25's,. So many people say they need more low end with these. It all depends on your room and speaker placement. We have drawn the same conclusion. The ONLY way you can determine if a speaker is going to work for you is getting it in your room. You can't assume anything. Keep up the good work with your channel! Let us know what speakers you end up with. Maybe a review? I think the Genlecs would be a good option too to try. I am 100% happy with my ATC's!
Hey man, your videos rly help me to concentrate so that I can make more instrumentals. Whenever I hear you, it’s like I can be around my lil bro, jus listenin’ and getting to the point.
Thank you! Very happy my videos can help you be even more productive. Keep doing everything you doing man!
You're a legend, thank you very much from France
Thank you! I really appreciate you saying that. Glad the video connected with you!
Wow. What a REAL talk. Feeling resentment and anger for yourself is a real reality!! LISTEN.
nobody can mix on a plane. i don't care how much isolation you can get in your headphones. planes are loud, noisy environments. you're not going to get good results doesn't matter if you're Andrew Scheps
You are the man. 🙏🏽🔥
Ok wait … there’s an ice cream bus? 🚎 I’m so confused now. 😳
I have the SM7B but I still get some room reverb.
No-one's going to help me do video stuff, mixing, mastering for my works unless I hire them. To hire, it takes money...minimal money = me doing it, or nothing happens.
A mix bus is not a master bus. I think you need to clarify this cause you are also spreading incorrect information. Everyone is thanking you and if you know what I mean you would clarify this. A mix bus is the place were all the channels get sent to. A master is a stereo bounce/bus of the mix bus. In fact. there is nothing to send in a bounced Master bus. "Stem Mastering" is arguably mastering. Mixing is used to make the music sound good. Mastering is "mostly" to make music loud, and in the case of albums to make all tracks cohesive.
This is so true, but it’s actually a trade-off, nothing is perfect. For example, Floyd Mayweather is so good at boxing that he has trouble reading, but also understands the business of boxing. Harry Ford was so good at making motors, he didn’t need to know the business, he hired everyone else that did. There’s a video of Ford being asked questions by the media, and all he did was point to the guys he hired that had all the answers for the media. It’s hard because we can’t get the quality we’re looking for in our local studios, also there’re so many local studios selling us a dream because we’re so willing to pay and invest in our craft, while in reality, they actually suck, but continue to take our hard earn money. Also money talks, why do you think a lot of criminals enter the music business, they get money from crimes and pay the high cost for the quality they need and they also know when a person is lying, and can sniff it out, a lot of them are wired that way, to sniff out BS. Honestly I can’t think of a record label that is not affiliated with criminals. Us normal guys and girls are trying to do things the right way, but also the wrong way, if that makes any sense. Great video, and for everybody else, pick yourself up and try it again. Peace and blessings!
I am thankful for every video you make... it makes me get going.
Other people will give you the result that you paying for. Nothing extraordinary in most cases. Only the owner can make some exquisiting results by putting the hours that would be impossible request from others. And it is a higher ground when you could resolve a mix issue by redoing some voice or editing other take. That's great vantage of doing all. To not be lost i trust my intuition (I learned to trust it, is like knowing without a reason why to explain, a hunch. Intuition works and cuts roads) but I mixed with the rational - cos this hunchs dont go far without knowledge to support in something complex like mixing, and I'm ruthless honest about what i liking or not. Is like two different persons are recording and listen afterward and judging and take productions decisions. I always judging myself (I see that as natural in listening process and health and inevitable). And in recording i try to be super intentional and relax at onces. This i guess is my sweet spot. Mixing is so hard because you have to learn "tools" (meaning plugins) takes time, study, videos eheh, - to make some audible music. But it s exciting
My room became a disaster after I do install a new furniture on the short wall (speakers are on the long), all stereo gone, vocals, guitars, highs, so I do need a treatment but really don't know what to do, the room is asimetric and don't have much options to move things inside.
Hey man. I'm a visual artist and so often everything you talk about with music can be applied to this craft as well. Point being you're wonderful, you're inspiring, and you're reaching beyond your goals. Thanks.
The greatest problem solver is learning your room. Play a lot of music that you know very well in your listening position and with a lot I mean hours of listening. Learn your room, learn your room 🫨
My personal advice is to get it right at the source. If it doesn’t sound right fix it at the source. If you want a certain sound try to find out how the sound you’re after is made, how is it recorded, what gear is used and how has it been done before. For instance how samples were trimmed and how layers were added. Microphone techniques, placement in the room and commitment. Having everything recallable and editable isn’t necessary a good thing. Commit and keep going forward and if it doesn’t work, fix it at the source 😊
I had an experience where I wrote an album plus worth of songs and couldn’t write again. I struggled for years trying to record it, scrapped it and re recorded it. Finally I finished and released that album and said to myself, ok I am done now. Then the ideas came and I wrote another album in the last 2 years. The block was there for so many years because I didn’t finish what I started. I also struggled with self doubt and my abilities as a musician. Once I got over that it became fun. Now I’m having fun!
GREAT VIDEO. Every artist should see this
YO BRO PLEASE FIX THE SHUTTER SPEED ON THE CAMERA
I think another big positive this approach has is that is forces you into networking with other people in the industry. I personally have a hard time networking because I am exactly who this video is talking about, I meet no engineers because I am trying to be my own, I meet no artists because I am trying to be my own, etc. I think being a piece of the puzzle (the music industry) carves a better path to success than trying to be the whole puzzle.
I used to get down on myself for not being an elite level lead guitar player or not being able to mix music but then I realised that I've put all my hours into songwriting (chords, riffs, melodies and lyrics). I now have a great recording engineer/mixer to work with and great musicians that want to play in a band with me and record my songs. As the recording engineer said to me: "You don't need to worry about snare sounds and compressors. That's my job."
Thank you for this ! Beginning of the year I set out to focus only on music production and this video has given me confirmation to go ahead with that
Thanks Evan,
I get what your saying. But to me it's fun getting better at things specifically because they're hard. I find mixing really frustrating and it gets in the way of songwriting and recording. But nothing is more fun or rewarding than getting it right after it's been challenging.
Hey I just did these drops in my new song and it is great man!❤
Starting my days with your new vids really makes my life better.❤ Sway master #2 here! 2025 will be focused!!!
Fabulous advice and great empathy - thanks for the guidance 😊
This was great and wise. If you're like me, the goal os to use all my interests to be making a living at art. My plan right now is choose phases: write songs phase (an album, a batch), record demo phase/ mixing experiments, practice/polish phase, track the album phase, mix final album phase. The idea is to not jump around whim to whim but phases of absorbed focus.
Jack of all trades, master of none is a known conundrum, yeah it's a thing, but if you do it out of love, and you have the desire, it's really not a frustrating thing at all. You can do it all yourself and it won't be the best ever. It will still be something you can be proud off, and when its out of love, the enjoyment of the creation is enough. You will improve, seeing (hearing) the improvement will be harder, yet it will be there, and of course it will take longer because your learning a lot of things, but think back to being at school, you learnt English, Math, History, Science, religion, sports, sticking up for yourself, and fitting in, and 10'000 other things, took over a decade true, glad you did it ?
Yo, I've had a panick attack through this whole video - I recognize what you're talking about is key 🔑. Honestly this knowing that there's sooooooooo many things to learn and practice for a long time has been one reason I've put off even starting writing music in the first place. Thank you for once again talking about core concepts that pack a powerful punch 🥊 (ha get it? Boxing) 😉
Brah, I'm so deep into doing absolutely every aspect that I might as well just keep doing it that way.

Man.. that is hard.
