    • @properformancecricket
      @properformancecricket 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for the comment. Perhaps start with tennis balls to help you build your technique without the fear of getting hurt. Keep you intent to score high so you are always looking to hit the ball. From that positive position you can evade the ball if required. Start with underarm tennis balls, build to harder balls underarm and then finally to throw downs and sidearm / bowlers in the nets. Back yourself and trust you technique and see what you can do. Good luck!!

    I think in terms of the modern game we are really just looking for stability/balance, eyes over the line, bat/hand speed and allowing the ball to come on.

    • @properformancecricket
      @properformancecricket 2 місяці тому

      Yep that's definitely the key at the top level as there isn't much time for excessive footwork to the quicker bowlers. The question is what is best for kids and newcomers to the game?

    • @__lancaster
      @__lancaster 2 місяці тому

      @@properformancecricket Well for newcomers and kids the older principles are useful to develop the key ingredients they will need down the track. So the reason you want to teach keeping the front foot as close to the pitch of the ball is nothing to do with the foot and everything to do with head stability and eyes over the ball which maximises their chance of middling the ball. It is very easy to confuse a young player with a series of 'rules'. The best coaches will adapt to the natural physical and mental abilities of the child and build confidence from there. If Steve Smith has taught us anything it is that techniques are fluid over time and all players remain highly adaptive to change.

    • @properformancecricket
      @properformancecricket 2 місяці тому

      @@__lancaster Totally agree and this is the philosophy we go by for all our players and coaches that come on board. Nicely said and thanks for your input

  • @brendanh8193
    @brendanh8193 2 місяці тому

    Positive: Great elbow position. His head is mostly stable, which is good. It was a lovely on drive - best shot of the over. Issues: His step towards the ball wasn't close enough to the line of the ball, particularly on the blocks (defensive strokes) and off drives. (The first 3 balls had no foot movement.)This means that any ball movement inwards could sneak through the gap, either off the bat, pad or going between both, and onto the stumps (most likely) or into the keepers hands (less likely, given the bowling length). Putting bat and pad right next to each other stops the ball dead, if blocking, but also adds a little power to the drives. (You could see that in the power of the on drive.) Choices: I probably would have gone back (on the 3rd ball) and played a late cut instead of the square drive, but he executed it fine (except for the lack of foot movement).

    • @properformancecricket
      @properformancecricket 2 місяці тому

      Thanks Brendan - do you think it's imperative that all batters should be getting their foot closer to the ball? Or is it a stable base and head position that the top levels players look for? At some level I agree the intent to go towards the ball needs to be there.

    • @brendanh8193
      @brendanh8193 2 місяці тому

      @@properformancecricket Both, particularly for the type of shot we were looking at here (drives and foward defense). Look at how Warner and Ponting drive, and you see both in action. As mentioned above, the aim of a forward defensive block is to prevent it getting past the batsman. By putting both bat and pad together, this is a wider barrier than just the bat. The greater the step, the less likely it would be lbw if it misses the bat. For the drive, there are two elements in the step - how far forward and how far sideways or laterally. For the distance forward, the aim is to use the step to make the ball into a half volley (where the ball bounces between about 20 to 40 cm from where the bat hits it) because that is the length of the greatest power for that stroke as you hit them near the bottom of the bat (10 to 15 cm from the bottom). In the above over, only the 2nd ball was a true half volley length, and you saw how fast it came off the bat. By stepping a little more forward, he could have made both the first and 5th balls into half volleys. (The on drive of the 4th ball was the exception to this because he had to clear his own leg, making the sweet spot slightly higher on the bat for that shot.) By stepping more to the line of the ball (ie laterally) there is more likelihood that his head and bat are in line with the ball at the instant he hits it. This translates to fewer edges, should the ball swing or seam, and greater likelihood of hitting the center line (and therefore the sweet spot). Furthermore, it means that he can use the same stroke positioning relative to his body for a wide arc of shots (from straight mid off to backwards point), with the adjustments made primarily by the step. This is good for developing the muscle memory of the stroke. There are some dangers in bigger steps, particularly if the step causes you to fall across the line of the stumps. However, generally it is better to have more footwork than less.

    • @properformancecricket

      Might be an issue with your stance, might be an issue physically with your flexibility and or strength. It's hard to give an exact answer but I'd be working on having a simple and effective technique and increasing your flexibility through your hips, lower back and hamstrings and increasing your strength in your glutes, quads and hip flexors. Good luck!

    What makes a leg spinner bowls full toss delivery and how to minimize this error?

    • @properformancecricket
      @properformancecricket 3 місяці тому

      Often it's too long a delivery stride and a passive front arm which causes an early release and too much flight. Shorten the delivery stride, maintain momentum through the crease and be active with the front arm should help to lower the trajectory and impart more spin and hopefully drift on the ball! Good luck!
