The Wicklow Way - Clonegal to Dublin - Walking 132km through the Garden of Ireland. Walking the Wicklow Way from south to north would be my preferred choice as it leaves the best until last, in terms of scenery. There's two days of walking in lowlands on the southern end, so its nice to get that done first. From there on you will have stunning landscapes, mountains, valleys, lakes, waterfalls, ...

Durrow Leafy Loop

23 km loop over 5 hours at a comfortable pace, and allowing time to stop for photos and to observe the environment. I began at Dunmore, and walked clockwise. The section on the trailhead map marked A to B is for access to and from the trail from Durrow centre. After passing by the Castle, I walked along a tarmacked country lane before I came to a T-junction. There is no waymarker here, but turn...

CLEAR LAKE
Переглядів 862 роки тому
Clear Lake is the only natural lake in the Slieve Bloom mountains. Remarkable because of its fresh water, considering it is located in the middle of a bog, but also because of its almost perfect circular shoreline. It has been described as “bottomless”, and judged to be somewhere between 25 and 30 metres in diameter. It is to be found on high moorland.

    Hi Donal. Epic trip, you got all the weather's 😅. You captured some lovely scenery along the way. That was a good decision to go from south to north, keeping the best landscape for the end journey. The dying cow !! That brought some memories 🫣 for me. Fair play on completing the trip, it's a great achievement. All the best 👍

      Thanks Andrew!! For a change I got mostly great weather. In fact, I got sun burn! As I left Glenmalure Lodge and passed up by Mullacor Hut, I was thinking of your Art's Lough video. Hi. According to the weather forecast, there isn’t much rain for the weekend. But it is Ireland, so always pack a rain jacket. (There is almost no shelter from trees etc.. ) It shouldn’t be cold either. The boat takes about 20 mins. It will pick you up four hours later. The island is private property, no dogs allowed. There are no facilities on the island. Toilets are at the harbour before you leave. Bring food and water. When you land, cross to the other side of the island (southern side), and then off to the right. Footage from a couple of weeks ago. Enjoy.

      Hi Andrew. Have been coming here for years. It's a fantastic spot. As wild as it gets, but private property. Safe parking, compost toilet, water supply from a well. Some lovely little trails around the place, I think its 6 or 7 acres. We have always had a very enjoyable and relaxing time here. Reindeer pi** was lovely 😆 All the best!

      Hi Gerry! It was a fantastic trip. Thoroughly enjoyed it. We paddled for about 9 or 10 hours in total and, apart from two fishermen, saw nothing except wilderness. And it was serene! The river rose late in the evening, as it was tidal in that area, and visited our camp 😀Just as well we had hammocks! It was a really peaceful and enjoyable trip!

      Thanks Bryan! To be honest, I only started recording some of my camping and hiking so I could look back on past trips. For me, photos are a bit static and end up on a hard drive, rarely seen again. I did try including myself in some videos, I just didn't feel I was a natural, so I went for the more anonymous approach. Some channels though, such as "Swedwoods", are successful in this regard. I do realize that's not very personal, and the potential to add more to the video has been lost. Having said that, I have been toying with the idea of going in front of camera for a five day trip I'll be doing in the new year. Thanks for your kind words. Donal.

    Very nice video. I'm thinking of doing this myself in a couple of weeks, Is the trail well marked? Any tips? Subscribed :)

    • @donaloutdoors
      @donaloutdoors 2 роки тому

      Hi Phil. Yes, the trail is fairly well marked. Although, there were a few sections I thought the markers were very spaced out, Clonaslee to Glenbarrow springs to mind. I would bring a map! Boots are essential, I think! The trailheads are supposedly 4 to 5 hours apart. You will get your water from streams around the trailheads. I filtered 2 litres each time. Water around the lowlands of Cadamstown is not ideal, I think, because of farmland. There is water east of Cadamstown near the Giants Grave, and west of Cadamstown as you rise up the mountain alongside a stream in a stand of Hazel if I remember. You cross farmland in a few areas around Cadamstown, and also just west of Monicknew. In one instance in Cadamstown, you pass by the farmers backdoor, and through their paddocks. Don't skip any sections of the trail, e.g. at Cadamstown, Kinnity, or Glenbarrow. They are too nice to miss! Kinnity castle is only 100 metres off the trail and worth a look! The goats on the northern slopes are wild, but won't bother you. I got dropped off, but if you are parking, there is a carpark at Glenbarrow where residents live right at the carpark. I've also seen people park on the street in Clonaslee and hike in. You need to bring all your food, there's nowhere really to resupply unless you add lots of kilometres to your hike. Clear's house at 24:45 is not on the trail, but nearby, drop a message if you want coordinates. You should have the trail mostly to yourself. Enjoy, let me know if you have any questions, and let me know here how you get on! Safe travels!

      Thank you Gerry. I certainly am no videographer or photographer, but I shot/ filmed that on an iPhone at a bushcraft weekend recently. It's a lovely deciduous forest on the banks of the river Barrow. It started out as just a walk around camp to snap some memories, but I soon realised I had enough photos and footage for a short film. The eggs, though, were coincidental :-D
