Magician Lance Burton's Legendary 1st Performance on Johnny Carson, aired October 28, 1981
Great stage presence. A master of his profession. Pure class. That's Lance Burton.
I was working that night. A friend told me about it the next day. Before now I never saw the ball trick - it was just as my friend described it 43 years ago. I used to make props for an amateur magician, and I have no idea how that one was done. I thought maybe a strong magnet pushed through a hydraulic tube...
@@majorskepticism7836 Thank you for sharing. That effect is a difficult to pull off.
@@darksidedeceptions we got it to work with the hydraulic tube, magnet, and a small ball bearing - on a flat surface. Poorly. I studied physics and mechanical engineering during my apprenticeship and still can't even imagine how one *might* do it. Maybe a trained mouse with a strong magnet strapped to it's back? Actually the magnet idea is dead because it would cause the fabric on Lance's clothing to bunch up. I remain stumped.
@@majorskepticism7836 This is a great story and theory. I'm sure Lance would love to hear about it.

I am guessing there is someone right behind him and we are seeing two peoples arms. Backstage is very dark which allows for it.
Amazing magic show .. the greatest of all time ✨ 🎩.. but what is the name of the first music ?!

He mostly did not look at his hands. Had his routine down so well.
His facial expressions are creepy as hell.
Everything he does is class! So elegant and beautiful.
Kind of a wild-eyed psycho shtick
he does seem like a vampire wizard
Lemax Smoke & Mirrors Magic Shop | Michaels: Arts and Crafts
I've run this video at a quarter speed & I still can't see how he does that sleight of hand.
How much coke did he take before that?
Now _that_ has to be the most asinine comment I've seen here! Grow up!
jesus christ !! talk about cringe !! ewww thats a psycho grin if ever i saw one ...the audience was so unimpressed he has to stand there staring at them as if to say ..well... i did something ... arent your gonna clap ... i know they did out of sheer cringe and awkwardness .... even then when the audience didnt they had a recording of clapping played ... sooooo BAD!!!!
... The " WITHNAIL & I " LOOK
Classy act but he looks creepy.
Incredible act, annoying bad choice of background music
Great performance. Creepy face though.
sorry
10 03 new hnd stop vid
If Jim Carey were a magician
He rarely looked at any of the objects - but straight to the audience 😮
Congratulations on a fabulous job SARA🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Just like a bent politition 😂
I like this timeless "Bryan Ferry" panache look better than his 1980s look. BTW absolutely STUNNING control of the birds in this act. Never seen anything even close to what he did here!
Not impressed. Awful music. Look like a vampire.
So the man can turn out a bird. Why the long story?
Puttin on the Ritz!
That sweet boy always loved his birds.
search Edgar Allan Poe SpeakEasy on google
You must see this show! The actors are amazing and perform Edgar Allan Poe’s works excellently!
He looks like the devil who can play killer violin.
Very 'classy', according to Johnny.
Doesn't get any better than this, intriguing character too!
Let’s here it for the pigeons !
Doves
is it just me,or does lance burton look a lot like jim carey?
He is just on another level. Even that look in his eye, he's so focused. Or possessed LO.L When you do Carson show, You do Carson's show. Totally worth the price of Admission
This should have 44 million👍🏼
A craftsman who, from my memory, would have said yes to appear gratis at a kid’s birthday party let alone do charitable work or appear at some press event.
I've seen General Grant's Dove & Silk act many times; and, I think this specific footage shows one his absolute smoothest execution of the Double Dove Production - and, all the other times I've seen him do it was Grade A; but, this one was A++
Thank you for your input. I think he is a class act. I wish I could have seen him perform live.
@@darksidedeceptions Don't feel too bad about never having seen him live, as his act was so practiced and perfected to such a high degree of repeatability, that their is very little variance at all from performance-to-performance. Live or Recorded, you would be seeing the exact same thing - right down to the facial expressions - with only about a 2% variance from show to show. Not many performers can make that claim. That is why this footage is extra special, being as it captures an "extra perfect" Double Dove production - whereas with many other dove-workers, the variance is usually in the misses, awkward release, or something that throws their rhythm off. General Grant was steady and consistent as a metronome.
@@BaronMcCausland I like his flash Zombie vanish as well! He had attention to detail.
@@darksidedeceptions Yes, I agree. And, just like how GG worked-out the smoothest way to get into the Double Dove, he also worked-out the cleanest and most natural looking Zombie Ball Vanish with how to get into the "P" in the "TC", with that 'step-over' move he did, and with how the GG balls were made, to have a better "port" which didn't get hung-up. So to me, there are a couple of things going on with GG that made him so special. 1) His handling of his "helpers" - not talking about the doves here - and methodology behind how he presented an effect; 2) His gear - all it first-rate with zero issues in the designs or manufacture; and 3) as you said: His attention to detail, making every super clean-cut, natural, and direct.
Those telescoping candles are really cool!
When he first came on stage he reminded me of Christopher Walken, great magic show.
Truly amazing performance. His hands were so special.
He knows his stuff, but by today’s standards it’s a tad creepy.
with that stare, he makes Jack Palance look beautiful!
Awesome for the time, I was 6. He looks like Elvis and Satan had a baby.
Having lived in Vegas for many years, I know where Burton lived for a time. 1280 Scooter Street was the address. It is a mansion that is painted all black up on a hill. He used to have wild parties there quite often and many female Porn stars attended. Strange thing is while building that house a construction worker was beheaded. I think he sold it earlier than one would have expected.
His fingers looks incredibly creepy…
The birds were impressively obedient too
