The Entertainer featuring Roy Castle with Ben Castle and the Blah Street Band
Roy Castle joins Ben Castle and the Blah Street Band for an electronic big band romp through Scott Joplin's 'The Entertainer'
I was very lucky to have performed and collaborated with my dad on many occasions, and I learnt so much from him, but I was only 20 when he died, so my own musical journey was only just beginning. If I could have one very selfish wish, it would be to do a collaborative project with him now that I'm a bit older. I think we'd make something really special together.
The Blah Street Band and I were looking for a rhythmic solo element for The Entertainer and decided to feature some of his tap-dancing from a bootleg cassette I'd found of one of his gigs that was recorded before I was born. We also used the sound of the audience laughing at his routine, a snippet of his trumpet playing, and got him to count in the final section.
The Entertainer is taken from 'An EP' by Ben Castle and the Blah Street Band, which also includes guest appearances from Matt Berry and Beth Rowley. You can listen here:

Beth Rowley with Ben Castle and the Blah Street - Let's Face the Music and Dance

@bethrowleymusic joins Ben Castle and the Blah Street for a Quentin Tarantino / Ennio Morricone inspired version of the Irving Berlin classic Jazz standard, 'Let's Face the Music and Dance'. For rights reasons, part of the video had to be chopped out, so there is a very clunky edit about half way through. Do accept our apologies for the barbaric cut that happens. We do so hope it doesn't spoil...

Drum routine from The Roy Castle Show in 1961

Drum routine with Roy Castle, Phil Seamen, Jack Parnell, Kenny Clare and Art Morgan from The Roy Castle Show. Dad was in his element playing music and loved showcasing his favourite musicians. These were the top jazz drummers in the UK at the time and dad was in awe of them all. It was a live TV show and, not long before transmission, Phil Seamen, who was the one everyone revered, was nowhere t...
Mel Tormé and Roy Castle - Let's Call the Whole Thing Off

Mel Tormé was dad's favourite singer, so it was a buzz for him to get to sing a duet with him. Mel was also a fan of dad's and they ended up being great friends. This version of Let's Call the Whole Thing Off is from The Garry Moore Show. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be footage left of the encounter, but I'm glad the audio remains. They also recreated it on Mel's UK radio special.
Jimmy James, Eli Woods and Roy Castle - The Box Sketch

Jimmy James, Eli Woods and Roy Castle perform The Box Sketch on The Roy Castle Show in 1961. Dad worked a lot with Jimmy James over the years and this is the most famous routine they did. I wish there was more footage of them performing together. They are various versions of this sketch, some of them with Jimmy's son James Casey after Jimmy died. This version was taken from The Roy Castle Show ...

I'm putting up some videos of dad today to celebrate his 90th Birthday. The wonderful Una Stubbs plays the violin and dances with dad in this rendition of Richard Rogers' The Sweetest Sounds. In the show, the conductor Harry Rabinowitz had just fainted after finding out it was a live tv show, so dad had to take over at the baton.

I'm putting up some videos of dad today to celebrate his 90th Birthday. This is his dance routine for Happy Feet, which is from the album 'Garry Moore presents Roy Castle', produced by Sonny Burke for Reprise Records. He was signed to Reprise by Frank Sinatra, but it was the wrong time to be making crooner music as it had been overtaken by rock and roll, but the album is beautiful. I actually p...

I'm putting up some videos of dad today to celebrate his 90th Birthday. Dad was a regular guest on the Garry Moore show in the early 1960s. He got to work with a lot of his heroes over this time. I wish there was more footage of him on the show. I have a recording of him singing with Mel Tormé and I know he was often on there with Sarah Vaughan and Nat King Cole as well as comedy legends such a...

I'm putting up some videos of Dad today to celebrate his 90th Birthday. Here is his good mate Bernard Cribbins appearing on The Roy Castle Show in 1964. They loved any opportunity to work together. Bernard actually did the narration for the audiobook of Dad's Autobiography, as Dad was too ill to do it himself.
