The Wu-Tang Clan is an American hip-hop collective formed in Staten Island, New York City, in 1992. The group consists of RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa, and the late Ol' Dirty Bastard, who passed away in 2004. Their close associate, Cappadonna, later became an official member. Widely regarded as one of the greatest hip-hop groups of all time, Wu-Tang Clan is credited with revitalizing East Coast hip-hop.
After signing with Steve Rifkind's label Loud Records in 1992, the Wu-Tang Clan released their debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), in 1993. Initially receiving positive reviews, the album has since been hailed as a classic and one of the most influential hip-hop albums ever. Between 1994 and 1996, the group members released successful solo albums, further solidifying their influence in the music industry. In 1997, they released their second album, Wu-Tang Forever, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 1998 Grammy Awards. The group followed with additional albums, including The W (2000), Iron Flag (2001), 8 Diagrams (2007), and A Better Tomorrow (2014), though these later albums didn't achieve the same level of acclaim. Their seventh album, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin (2015), was a unique single-copy release purchased for $2 million by former hedge fund manager Martin Shkreli.

Sie gingen so, wie sie gekommen waren: Mit großem Hallo. Was 1994 mit einem Skandal um ein nicht lizensiertes Stranglers-Sample im Song "Back" begann, endete vor drei Jahren mit einem exzellenten Unplugged-Konzert in Dortmund. Kinderzimmer Productions sagten Adieu, nicht ohne auf "Over and out" noch einmal eindrucksvoll unter Beweis gestellt zu haben, warum man sie vermissen wird und sogar muss. Im August 2010 wagten Textor und Quasi Modo dann doch ein einmaliges Comeback - mit der "besten Kinderzimmer-Coverband aller Zeiten - und der teuersten", wie der MC nicht ohne Grinsen anmerkt. Die Aussicht, ein Konzert mit dem Radio-Symphonieorchester des ORF spielen zu können, überzeugte zum Glück sogar die prinzipientreuen Ulmer, für die der Abschied eigentlich ein endgültiger gewesen war.. Denn das, was das Hip-Hop-Duo, sein langjähriger Drummer Jürgen Schlachter und das renommierte Klassik-Ensemble nach nur eineinhalb Tagen Probezeit auf die Beine stellten, ist genauso interessant, wie es die Konstellation verspricht. Textor ließ es sich nicht nehmen, besonders ausgefeilte Arrangements für die Songs zu schreiben, und die Symphoniker nehmen die Herausforderung mit Genuss an. Auf Wimbledon-Niveau spielen sich Band und Orchester die Bälle zu. Das Ergebnis ist eine Soundlandschaft, die gleichermaßen kraterübersät und wunderschön, auf jeden Fall aber faszinierend ist. Verschmitzt grinsend bringen die Streicher etwa ein Zitat aus Beethovens fünfter Symphonie in "Quasi Modo lost control" unter. Die aggressiven Hörner hingegen peitschen das ohnehin schon wuchtige "Der Durchbruch" nochmal ordentlich nach vorne. Beide zusammen basteln für "Das andere" eine paranoide Soundkulisse, die aus einem guten Song einen tollen macht. Da Textor in der Kinderzimmer-Auszeit nichts von seinen Rap-Skills eingebüßt hat, Schlachter für die gewohnt tighten Grooves sorgt und die Songauswahl eine gute Mischung aus bekannt, obskur und neu aufbietet, bleibt "Gegen den Strich" auf Albumlänge ein sehr erfreuliches Hörerlebnis. In jedem Takt ist der Live-Aufnahme anzumerken, dass beide Parteien einen Heidenspaß an der Sache hatten. Wegen der atmosphärischen Dichte und Homogenität der Platte fällt es zwar schwer, Highlights zu benennen. Vielleicht das düstere "Die Stadt die es nicht gibt"? Oder das temporeiche Roadmovie "Sie kriegen uns nie"? Wie wäre es mit der extra verhallten und bekifft klingenden Version des Klassikers "Marihuana"? Aber letztlich ist das doch egal. "Totgesagte leben länger", begrüßt Textor zu Beginn fast schon entschuldigend das Wiener Publikum. Er braucht nicht rot zu werden. Selten wurde das Erbe einer Band besser verwaltet als in diesem Falle.
