CycleKart Spoke Upgrade

In this video we upgrade the spokes on the rear wheel of the 1913 Duesenberg CycleKart. The rear wheels on a CycleKart take a lot of abuse from side loading in hard corning. Well said!
Holly man 😱😱😱😱🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰👍👍👍
Steve - very nice boat, congrats on such a beautiful canoe! One question, please - Any thoughts on fiberglassing the entire exterior of the boat? Would that help with strength / longevity? Is there a downside to that? I am looking to start this project soon with my son but I am wondering about doing just the seams (per the plans) vs the entire boat.
I think it adds a bit of piece of mind. Although, it will add weight, cost and time

thanks for you videos I am going to start a build myself
Right on,. I am here to help if you have any questions.
Is it a no no to put a 125cc Lifan with a four speed trans or would that be a cycle car? Thank you for the informative video.
Honestly, I like the idea. But here in the USA, we want to keep the field level by using the same type power plants. If you are not planning to participate in organized events, then it really doesn't matter.
Seems to me that for the people that want to make changes they should build a car to "spec" first and then start looking at modifications at performance upgrades. Find out how good the car works before you decide to make it something else entirely. I imagine that just putting in a bigger, more powerful engine just creates a cascade effect of other things that need to be upgraded to compensate for the additional power from the bigger engine. Better suspension, bigger brakes, front brakes, better/bigger tires, beefier hubs and axles, frame reinforcement. All these things that put you right back to where you started in terms of the power:weight ratio, just in a much more expensive package. I too, am looking at building my first cycle kart and asked all these questions and after thinking about it came up with the same answers. The cars are meant to be cheap(ish), fun to drive, but also rewarding to build and something of an artistic endeavor.
Yes, exactly correct
My dad used to race go-karts back in the 80s- early 90s running 5hp Briggs and Stratton motors and all the ways small engine dudes find top get just even the smallest percentage of gains out of these small engines never ceases to amaze me. But a few fractions of a percent, aggregated over many iterations and modifications really starts to add up to big gains.
Yes, a bit of tuning can yield more performance. I have noticed the guys with highly tuned stuff spend a lot of time fiddling with the carb at events and not a lot of time running and having fun
Now, this is what I call a cyclekart! Great build, you must be really pleased with what you’ve created.
It is a super cool build. And Derrick is super cool guy too.
Hi Steve, thanks so much for making these videos, really enjoying watching how you figure things out. I am based in the uk and have just started my first build. I know this video was made awhile ago, but do you remember what part you used for your steering wheel quick release. And also do I need a steering shaft that is threaded on one end, or do I just weld the quick release to the steering shaft? Thanks in advance for any info, regard’s Jeff
Yes, I got the quick release from a company called Speedway. You don't need a threaded shaft, it is welded on.
If the frame rails by the axle aren't parallel, how will the bearings spin properly?
The bearings we use from AZUSA self adjust and misalignment is corrected. The bearings float in the flangettes
thank you this is very helpful keep up the good work much appreciated.
Glad it helped

This build turned out nice! Great job everyone!
Glad you like it!
nice driving.....miss that neck of the woods
Thanks for watching.
So sad. When I first came across cycle carts I felt I could be competitive spending abour 2500 bucks. Affordable fun racing with others in exactly the same spec cars. Awesome. And instead it has devolved into a car that is over engineered and super esxpensive. I want to to see how much you have sopent on these cars. Expensive alloys, complex suspensions. Hand made custom bodies. FFS way to make a fun grassroots everyman's racing series into another rich guy hobby. FACK!
You can build anyway you want. I have not spent more than $2500 on my first cyclekart, inflation now makes those same parts closer to $3500. If you build it the way the Stevensons did back in 1995, you will spend about $2500, that is with a plywood body and crappy Azusa spindles and hubs, you will have to bend or weld your own front axle and source springs from a scrap yard. But it can be done for cheap, many have done it.
@@stevevinson6030 Ok I get you can build a car for that. The problem is as a driver / racer can you be competitive in a 2500 dollar car against those that spend 5,000 10,000 or more.
Yes, absolutely they can. I have never seen a CycleKart that I thought cost more than $4k in parts to build, that is for a kart with every bell and whistle, most of the expensive stuff doesn't make it faster. Headlights, electric start, differentials, all the little do dads that make it look cool, all cost performance. So I think your overthinking this a bit.
@@stevevinson6030 Thanks for your reply. That is good news. Thanks again,
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍👍👍🇮🇩
You need to make a saddle to align and hold the axle
Thanks
The Honda CT90 Wheels are kind of hard to find any that aren't bent is there any other will configuration that will work in place of it The ones on eBay are narrower and don't look as good That's the only thing that's holding me up from building my first cycle car is finding a good wheel tire combination anybody have any info let me know please thank you
here is as link to a post on our FaceBook page that has the PDF of the CycleKart Wheel Bible, this has lots of helpful information regarding CycleKart wheels. facebook.com/share/p/9fWRo2gHZCA2z8cU/
this is the only EBAY vendor we recommend, the other guy who advertises US STOCK has had some quality issues reported by other cyclekarters. www.ebay.com/itm/360470589040?media=COPY&mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=NIOOI2KxTzO&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=8fFASmGdS4C&var=&widget_ver=artemis
I am going to assume since your back axle is fixed, you adjust your rid height by the length of your shacl;es ?
The shackles can make small adjustments. Ride height is more effected by the spring tension and how you build your spindles.
Where can I get a set of plans, as I live in UK thanks Rick
There is a digital version available on our ETSY store.
@stevevinson6030 thanks will find it
Beautiful work.
I agree, Rick really does nice work.
I'm a decent welder having worked in a machine/fabrication shop when I was younger, you can get some nasty UV burns on your arms welding with short sleeves. I think I am going to build one of these carts with my son, it looks like a lot of fun!
I always forget to cover my arms. I have gotten a pretty good "Farmer Tan" when welding on occasion. You and your son will love building one of these
Where did you get the seat from, I don't see it on your spreadsheet.
The seat, I made by hand from aluminum. If I was going to do it again, I would buy the low back bomber seat from Speedway.
Cool
Thanks for watching.
I am an ex faux finish artisan. Pro tip: you need an oil based Glaze. Then, introduce oil based wood stain to do top grain. You will also want a flogging brush to introduce long grain substrate. The final bonus tool is a check roller and a hog's hair softening brush. Icould write out instructions but w/o visuals, it would have to be an epic tome but I haven't even had my coffee yet. I haven't looked but I'm sure you could find YT vids showing how to build up a wooden faux finish. Love your attitude about trying new things.
Thanks for the tips, Yes, I was trying to do this on the cheap. I figured if it didn't look good or didn't hold up, I could just sand it down and start again. The good thing about this type of build, is that if it is bit messy, it looks a bit better. Thanks for watching.
Are you using 16 gauge 6061?
Some of the panels are .050 thick, some are .040 thick.
@@stevevinson6030 Thanks!
Will it ever run again????
Yes, just fine thanks.
what sprocket fits with that bolt patter ?
You will need a sprocket designed to fit the differential. It is available at the same vendor who sells the differential. www.staton-inc.com/store/26.-35-sprockets-roller-chain-3/8-x-3/16/35-a-60-tooth-sprocket-for-the-peerless-100-series-141-d-differential-4-hole/
When you install a new flywheel on one of these, it's a good idea to lap the new flywheel to the crank like you would a valve job. A little valve compound and turn it like you did to check you had clearance is all that's needed. Make sure to clean everything well before assembly.
Good tip!
The bearing sets I got from Go-Power don't have set screws in the bearing, there is a coller with one. Will this work or should I get some with set screws? Seems like the shaft might spin in the bearing.
I have found that the grub screws will mall the axle and make it very difficult to remove. The Collars work well to keep everything in place without messing up the axle.
@@stevevinson6030 Thank you, then I will run what I have.
Beautiful workmanship and excellent engineering, true show winners.
We agree!
Are these still classified a a motorcycle and can they be street legal?
As far as I am aware this has not been done here in the USA. I think one is registered in England, it looks more like a car once you add all the required stuff to make it street legal.
I keep reading that a 224 requires you grind the Mod2 cam. You didnt do that correct? Have a 224 bone stock leaking oil so I have to tear into it and thought about throwing a mod2 thats laying around in it. Springs and thinner head gasket. Leave the governor for now but going to dump the oil sensor.
I just put it in. I got the Mod 2 cam from NR Racing, they list a specific version for the 224. The decompression spring on early versions hits something and breaks, that happened on my dad's Duesenberg CycleKart with the 224.
Steve love your work and all the expert comments from people here who can do better BUT DON'T keep up the good work.I'm about to start making my tail section once i get over this flu, and I will post photo's on Aussie Cyclekarts 👍🏁
Ha, yes the internet is an amazing place. The tail is by far the trickiest part to make look right. This one is by 3rd version. Maybe someday I will make a 4th and finally get it to look right. LOL.

Thank you
Great video 🎉,I’m curiously that will it make a living on making this kind of cars in western countries?❤
I really would not know. Thanks for watching
need a pair of these for my build. Can’t get my head round why they are called shocks, when they are obviously dampers 🤷🏻♂️
Friction Shocks.....Friction Dampers.....not sure
What is the freeboard on this canoe? It looks nice and deep. I know this video is 2 years old. I'm wanting to build a 12'-13' solo canoe/kayak hybrid with front and rear decks with dry storage like you did in the bow of yours. All the kits and plans that I see have a pretty low side, but I want higher sides and a bit wider boat. I'm just looking around at different designs right now but I'll probably end up designing my own based on the best attributes of others that I've seen. Thank you.
This design is set up to be simple to build and cheap by reducing waste. You use almost all of the plywood sheet with this design. I think you could fairly easily scale it up a bit to make it larger, but you may need more sheet of plywood to make that happen.
was wondering if you think i could take the rear axel and tires and use it like a trike kit on a 250cc scooter i want to build something like a trunk trike basically hang the wheels back 2 feet behind the rear wheel and attach the side rails to the side rails of my scooter ? i could just get a trike kit but the car wheels are a lot heavier then the wheels on the kart can they handle 65 mph ?
the wheels we use are motorcycle wheels, so they should be good for highway speeds. Although that sounds pretty fast for this type of technology.
Amazing builds, stellar craftsmanship. Incidentally, it was your videos, Steve, that inspired me to build a cyclekart. Also, Mark from renegade spent over an hour on the phone with me answering the many questions I had and steering me in the right direction. Thanks guys!
Right on, I am glad you found us.
What kind of welder do you use? Like, 120 or 240, MIG or stick, etc?
I have a Mig Eastwood 175. it works well, although, I am not a welder, I'm a grinder, lol. Thanks for watching
