OMG flies!!!! They always creep me out regurgitating on things so I’ve been told since my childhood. ( I’m old)…… Then the colonization of bugs in the boxes??? No es bueno!!! Sorry the weather was bad. I had to close shop last week with pouring rain because we forgot our side walls for our tent. 3000 people attended. I had about 1/3 of my products (100 items) get drenched. Thank God I was able to lay them out under fans on my bed to air dry _All are fine. So disappointing. We had gotten all set up and hour before event was to start and had to call it. Ugh!!!! Would have been a kick A event. Weather was iffy the whole evening but very little rain after we left. Sigh. Just never know the weather here.

I agree, markets with handmade items always feels like a crap shoot. And when a hurricane comes through and all your markets get cancelled it’s even worse 😅 I sell bookish items which is really niche and I’ve never had an “incredible” market but I usually do at least a decent amount but I feel like there’s a limit to how well I can do at any market and just never really plan to be blown away by success 😅 thankfully I do wholesale too so it’s not my only income otherwise I’d be in trouble lol

4:43 I had a similar experience vending at a couple car shows. The only people there were the people showing the cars and their families, and I had the worst market ever at one of them (only sold 1 $5 keychain - almost no one was there!) and the other show was less than $50

with 200 vendors they could have split you guys up they did a bad job of placement if they are not going to limit for each category they should have thought about it a little more how was the crowd? I always hate seeing someone with the same stuff directly next or across from me......that's the worst because all you do is compare yourself and that feels so horrible.

I think for various reasons not every crocheter will stick to this art. The way you feel discouraged, so do they, so it is a matter of you sticking to it…. the others may not. You have the advantage of quality in your work, plus your sense of humor on You Tube and your perseverance and organizational skills. Try other options, such as marketing your plushies to gift shops, coffee shops, hair salons, museums .. places you may not think of. I think you would be surprised. But please don’t give up!!! ❤

You are not alone!! I started vending last year and in the short time I've been doing events I have seen an increase in the number of crochet vendors across the board. Don't get discouraged though, you have quality stuff that definitely stands out at events! Just keep doing what you are doing and hold on to your passion for it! I have a friend that does this full time that keeps telling me to hang in there because it will get better. Once the trend dies down the people doing it just to make a buck will move on to the next trend and there will be less crochet vendors at events again. We just need to ride out the storm till it blows through. You got this!!!

I vend at a local farmer's market. Every week we get our assigned spot. There is no bad spot in the market because it's a horseshoe shape. I had the mushroom guy try to usurp me from my spot several times. I complained about the assigned spots not being enforced. They confirmed it was getting to be a problem and it seems like they've corrected the problem.

Not me fan girling over the name drop! I am lucky enough to live in a small touristy town so the markets I go to tend to give me a slight priority as a returning vendor. However, I have seen quite a few more crocheters pop up at the markets that dont vet their vendors. Huge shout out to you and the patterns you show in your videos because honestly, some of those items I've made regulars at my table and they really keep me ahead of the crochet game. Not to toot my horn, but I seem to do better than the newbies at the markets and I credit a huge part of my success to your pattern suggestions! I watch your videos at my 9-5 and I so greatly appreciate your content and absolutely love your work.

I didn't want to discourage her from crocheting but just wanted to warn her because she is doing her first even in November of plushies. I haven’t had any events turn me down because of there being too many crochet artists, but at my last market there were 4 of us with probably 25 vendors total. Luckily we were all selling different types of items like wearables, home decor, and plushies. There was only one other vendor selling plushies like me, but it is frustrating to hear kids say ‘I wish I came here first’ and are sad they didn’t purchase from you. Luckily I do a lot of shows with my local township, so they are not super competitive and bring out a large community. I found I do best at their markets. I was barely making back my booth fee at the other venues I went to.

I sell custom tumblers and was at an event a few weeks ago that had 265 vendors and at least 15 other tumbler booths. 2 of which were a few booths down from me. I am so nervous about my next event. Not only did the coordinator admit she doesn’t keep track of what crafts are coming but we pick our own booth. It is great to pick you want a corner or not etc. but on the map only lists their personal name so all accountability is off the coordinator grrrrrr. It is a hometown event at my kids school so I am giving it one shot #cross fingers crossed

It is so much better to see a realistic point of view. I've got my 1st market coming up, and that's exactly what I've needed to hear. There is so much positivity to spread around with markets, which is absolutely fine, of course! But it adds so much pressure to it. Realistically, it's not always going to be a successful time. I'm sorry you're going through a sucky point in your markets, and I really hope business picks up for you 🤞💖

you can offer to remove the tag before bagging and just stick it in the bag loose. if the customer says no just say ok please use scissors to remove it. I feel your pain regarding the money back for your booking. Organisers take note, customer loyalty is a big part of market strategy and not allowing your customers to purchase as returning customers year after year is a big mistake. Markets thrive or collapse not just on customer attendance and your organisation skills should include consideration of previous years' success stories. DUH!! Sorry Manda just a wee vent of my own. I appreciate you!

I absolutely love talking to other crocheters at markets, especially when they are going out there trying to sell their creations! It's really inspiring to see what people make and to just socialize. On the other hand, nearly every event I have gone to recently, someone says something like "wow, crochet plushies are everywhere", which is honestly a bit frustrating, especially when others are pricing significantly lower than your items, or there are a dozen crocheters at one event. It's a really hard mental battle to fight, and kind of disheartening to see the market saturation. Thank you for sharing, hopefully your markets go well! ♥

It makes me feel better to know I’m not the only one dealing with that! I’ve been hearing that a lot lately as well! I still love meeting other crocheters so that part is nice. Good luck at your future events and thanks so much for watching!💕

I’ve been seeing a lot of other crochet plushie UA-camrs have declining sales as well. I think we’re at a peak of crochet plushies because everyone and their mother are selling them. It used to be that you can make anything and it would sell so you could just make a bunch of whatever you felt like making. HOWEVER- now that there is more competition you need to research what people want and stick to making those things. And you need to make them really well. So quality and uniqueness is important now too. Just a change in the market. But the market will naturally begin to eliminate a lot of crocheters because what they make won’t be able to compete and people will give up crocheting. And that will leave the diehard crocheters who love it, make the best quality items and are able to keep up with trends.

I think you’re right about that! Definitely need to be very intentional with what I’m making. It’s so tough because different things are popular at every event so it’s hard to gauge sometimes😅 thank you for the insight and for watching!!

Many crocheter have similar thoughts about the process of the amount of crocheters at the same event. I’m trying some higher priced vendor fees events and seeing if that helps with fewer repeat vendors. Hope it works. Love the Dracula!

I have never not had an event give priority to previous vendors. I assumed that was just standard practice, silly me. Have you considered niching? That's a good way to set yourself apart from other doing similar things. Lastly, if you make under a few 100k a year as a business you really learn to budget your money through out the year. It is always scary and feels like riding a roller coaster but it is doable. The majority of my income is made in Q4, that money stays in the bank and gets used sparingly through out the year. It's also essential to have multiple streams of income to help counter balance the lean times. But everyone has their own comfort levels with their finances, so I get it. They would have to drag me back to the "work force" kicking and screaming. XD Hang in there, you got this!

These bulb pins are amazing. I use them as stitch markers. After the plastic ones constantly smapping and me being a klutz pulling out my yarn, they are now my preferred stitch markers. Also the cable tie trick is amazing. I'd love to hear your thoughts about it after your market. Maybe take some corners with you, just in case. Loved the video and your thought on saturation of the market. I think it very much depends where you are. But i agree woth the others, diversifying is definitely the way to go. Or being unique in what you make. Maybe there is a niche within the niche, somehow.

@MadebyMandaMal I use bulb stitch markers for pricing but like these loop pins too! Have a pair of scissors handy and you could ask if they would like you to cut the tag off for them for if they want to hold it whilst going around.

I completely stopped doing events in the summer for it is just not worth it with the time and effort I put in to everything and then I wouldn't really make a positive profit, and hardly make my vendor fee. And I have been facing the opposite effect where organizers have no cut off and one event had about 8 (including myself) and the other one had 2 others.

@@MadebyMandaMal too many people go into events with mindset of just making a buck when you should go in with the mind set of representing your brand/business and local stores will find YOU and from there you can grow in their stores. This is the way I do every market and am currently in three locations.
