Cosby Moonshiners
This was a story told at the Cosby Campground and picnic area in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on July 19th, 2024. The event was described in a brochure we saw in the campground that said: White lightning, mountain dew, moonshine! Distill myth from fact as you learn details of making moonshine in the mountains from Moonshine Legends Mark Ramsey, Sally Clark, Digger Manes, and Kelly Williamson.

Take a four mile hike up Ramsey Cascades trail and gain 2,000 feet in elevation (nearly 13 kilometer round-trip going up and down 600 meters) to see Ramsey Cascades near Greenbriar in Smoky Mountain National Park. This was the cascades as seen on July 20th. I started out on my hike at 7:40am, reached the cascade at 10:05am, departed the falls at 10:40am, and arrived back at the parking lot at 1...

Im from Croatia... And let me just say that our folklore is terribly good❤And by the way I'm going to folklore!
I spent Alot of my chid hood in Tennessee my family lives in Townsend and Marysville tn I grew up camping at Cades cove what a great place to grow up if you ever want to experience a great place to take your children camping take them to the great smokey mountain National Park and take your bicycles and ride the 11 mile loope you'll see way more wildlife and see all the old Homesteads as well
Yes, I have a friend from your area of Tennessee, and our families went together to Cades Cove years ago. I recently (same time I recorded this video) returned to visit him and again we went to Cades Cove. Although the Great Smoky Mountain National Park gets 14 million visitors per year, we found that Cosby campground (where this video was recorded) was not even half full on a Friday night in mid-July (!). The national park is vast, and you can go places where there are crowds (The Sinks, Metcalf Bottoms, Sugarlands Visitors Center, Newfound Gap Overlook) or you can go to places that are quiet (Cades Cove on a Wednesday when only bicycle traffic is allowed, Cosby campground, Greenbriar, Balsam Mountain, backcountry camping sites away from the popular trails). The Smoky Mountains provide natural history and cultural history of extraordinary richness.

Jako lijepo!
The singing at 8:10 , what part of croatia is it from and what is this style of singing called?
It's from the area of Vrlika. I am not sure if the singing style has a name, but it is a common technique in the Dinaric ethnographic region. There's a type of Dalmatian polyphonic song called Groktalica that uses similar techniques

Prelepe igre, veliki pozdrav.
Beautiful video! Very varied costumes and dances, and the music was traditional and not too modernized. Can you tell us which ensemble this is, or where it is from?
Thank you for asking, I'll add to the description. I still have the program from the opening ceremony at ICSD 2017, but it's in a box somewhere. I suspect this was the National Folk Dance Ensemble of Croatia, LADO. One thing that impressed my students and myself was how many traditional music and dance groups were active in Zagreb during our visit. We met some dancers from this ensemble a day or two later when we were walking around the town.
Mislim da je Lado iz Zagreba
❤
So much diversity in 57k square kilometers, love all of it...

This is a rich culture of the Goddess still active in Croatia. I think Hungarians and Croatians have a lot in common. Not the language, but the beauty and the majesty of the rituals.
You just should know, that some of the shown dances, were actually Serbian, not Croatian. In general you are right, as our cultures are tight together.

At 11:48 I remember this one very well from my childhood here in the USA. My mom and I attended a weekly folk dance club where many of the members had visited Croatia and other countries to learn the dances and songs. They brought back records to play and would teach us all these dances. I used to love when the women sang and this one when they spun so fast and they screamed EEEEYAA! Haha! ❤️❤️❤️

Surprisingly, dances and music looks very similar to Russian ones. Except for some 'western-european-styled' insertions, all melodies sound very native to my Russian ear!
Not suprizing at all actually because we are both slavic :-)
Literally everything shown in this video is older than the concept of Western European common culture so idk where you're seeing any of that. This is authentic croatian tradition, similar to Russian sure, but I don't believe what's different to it here is necessarily taken from Western European culture...
Yes, I am Russian and can confirm that chorus songs and collective dances styles and melodies are very relative to our ear. But not for dances in pairs. They look Italian and sometimes even Turkish for me. Nothing similar to us - that's more Mediterranean culture notes, than slavic.
Gdje ti ovdje čuješ nešto Rusko???
Que c'est beau. Un grand bravo de France
Really wonderful Croatian brothers and sisters . Love you all
I feel slavanian relative similar notes.
Slične sa kojima..ili čijim???
@@ljubicacorak4932 Chorus songs sounds very Russian for me, despite the fact that I don't understand the language. :) And crowd dance look and sound also very close to Russian and Ukrainian style. As for pair dances, they are very Mediterranean and sometimes even Turkish. Nothing similar to our melodies.

Is this Lado?
Dakle, Mi uopće nismo prastanovnici balkana, jer nas nema u starorimskim svicima, a samim time niti nema hrvat.šahovnice, a kamo li staroslav. jezika kojeg je V.S.Karadžić preobličio u današnji jezik, a radi razloga veće kompliciranosti izvornika.
