30’ drop to the Ocean! | San Diego Junior Lifeguards send it!
This year, Junior Lifeguards in San Diego had the opportunity to jump off the Ellen Browning Scripps Pier for the first time. Traditionally, the Ocean Beach Pier has been used for this event, but it is currently closed due to storm damage.
In San Diego, jumping off piers is generally illegal unless you are part of a special program like the Junior Lifeguards. The San Diego Junior Lifeguards program is a month-long initiative focused on teaching ocean safety and building friendships. Participants learn essential skills such as CPR, first aid, and how to handle rip currents and other ocean hazards. They also gain hands-on experience with rescue techniques and engage in various physical activities to build strength and endurance, preparing them to become proficient water people.
The Junior Lifeguard program also emphasizes confidence and leadership development. Through team-building exercises and challenges, participants learn to work together and support one another, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. The friendships formed during the program often last a lifetime, creating a network of individuals who are knowledgeable about ocean safety and committed to looking out for their community.
Please consider donating to the Prevent Drowning Foundation, which provides scholarships for inner-city children who do not often have the opportunity to visit the ocean. Your support ensures that all children can learn these vital skills and enjoy the beach safely.

Lifeguards rescue an unresponsive scuba diver at La Jolla Cove in San Diego, CA on June 15th, 2024. If anyone has details about a GoFundMe for the family, please post in comments. I was volunteering at an event called rocks, rips, and reefs to which my diving club was a sponsor. I was overlooking the ocean when a group of scuba divers came to the surface and waving for help. Freediving with Seals in La Jolla, San Diego.

April dive in La Jolla with California Sea Lions. Over 20 seals swam the area I was diving for fish. It's important to stay calm and don't reach with your hands. Seal Lions are wild animals yet more curious about people in their environment. Video was taken in the ocean near Point La Jolla west of La Jolla Cove. #sunset #sandiego #freediving #waterman

why I don't think diving more than 7 feet is safe. you don't have to dive to see everything. if you get to a clear water, snorkel is allllll you need and you don't need to constantly worry out the tank or ear pressure n stuff.

Dr. Jennifer Tareco was my son's orthopedic doctor for many years! I am completely heart broken to hear of her passing. Watching this video breaks my heart deeply! My son was born with spina-bifida, and Dr. Tareco cared for him as if he was her own child. She is amazing and will be deeply missed!

I speared a halibut there back in the late 90's...fun spot for sure, just make sure you understand the perils of shore break if you are new to ocean activities.

Kinda of dicey to shoot halibut unless you know it is over 22” once shot you can’t release it if it is short. Also it’s pretty hard to measure before shooting. I did like you scouting that area I used to snorkel there years ago. Now I am just fishing . I am going to try surf fishing for halibut and ares like that may be good. I have been targeting them in the two bays with some success but no legal this year yet. A secret time it near grunion runs.

thats why you don't shoot unless you're sure its legal. I'm sure I've passed on plenty that were 22 - 23"

It’s a little more challenging, bringing scuba gear into the shallows at Shell Beach. I would recommend entering at children’s pool instead or at La Jolla Cove with scuba.

    • @SanDiegoWaterman

Shell Beach is a little challenging to enter with scuba gear due to the shallow Reef for the first hundred yards into the water. I would recommend entering in at children’s pool or at La Jolla Cove if you’re interested in exploring this area with scuba.

Thanks for the question. Likely not since the current and tides pull things to deeper water beyond the break. The sand is also constantly changing there and a strong possibility they are buried once a few days go by.
