I think I’d be doing everything I could to rid the bike of that irritating noise at the front end near the end of the video before riding it again. That would drive me mad ! 😂
From that bothy , unless you are crossing Abhainn Rath at Luibeilt to Kinlochleven do not try and bike over and around beyond Meannanach and towards Staoineag to get to the head of Loch Treig.... Did this as a "team building" piece of nonsense with my work in 2019 and it is hike, carry, throw a bike over the ditches and stepping stones from Meannach (we stayed in Staoineag bothy) but not even suitable for MTB (let alone a "gravel" drop bar rigid !), pure riparian bog, knee deep most of the way... I'm wary of any OS tracks that aren't marked as double broken lines these days!!
Very well done. Captured all the best bits of a hidden gem. Looking forward to more.
A cardio machine
Your link to buy me a coffee isn't working Rusty!
Yep, it's disabled at the moment.
Hi Rusty, really enjoying your videos. A group of us are heading up to Killin next year for a few days mountain biking. I spotted your 3 Glens killin loop and thought it would be excellent for our group. We are an elderly group so most of us on e-MTB's now and although your is a gravel route, it will be fine for us. I couldn't find the GPX file for this one, do you still have it?
Hi, glad you enjoyed it. Here is the link: www.komoot.com/tour/706971669?ref=aso
Great video, thanks. Better with a suspension bike. Straight rigid forks no use.
Nice to see you were responsible with the drone... some folks just want the glory shots, no matter what 👌
A little bit nippy at the end of June… oh how I miss the UK 😂😂😂 love from Italy 👍
definitely gonna do this next year!
I like the tread pattern on those tyers. 🇨🇦 Visiting here near Loch Lomond, and on the lookout for routes to ride. Found a few, thanks!😁👍
Thanks for sharing & making this vid 👏😁
Hey I’m watching this for the second time😊 I live in Muir of ord and plan to cycle over to struy one day and was wondering if you can remember how far it would be from the dam over to struy? In miles please?🤪
Hey, it is about 13 miles over the moors - something like 2 hours or so I think it took me. It's very wet!!
@ that’s great thanks for that👍 I was up there on Wednesday about 4 miles up the hill road past the dam wasn’t to bad but it’s not February 😂 cheers, great vids.
Your aside about the camper vans was unnecessary. Otherwise a lovely video.
I would guess that the no entry signs where because you were on the forest drive, and cars are more limited where they can go.😊
Just bought this years version with a 10\51 rear cassette absolutely a game changer 33MPH downhill not really spinning out
The Lomond Hills are deceptive - mere nipples on the skyline when viewed from Edinburgh but fulsome paps when you get close up! You managed more riding than I did on East Lomond, when I carried up pretty much all the way from Falkland (heavy old MTB) - a good workout. If you missed it, the descent of Glen Vale is worth going back for - delightful.
A nice adventure and a good learning experience; I'm guessing there are parts of the route you would avoid if returning, but most of it looked enjoyable. Finding new routes close to home becomes ever more difficult and therefore satisfying when it works out.
Hi hope you can help looking at getting the planet x tempest I am 6.2ft and don't know what to get large or xl any evidence would be helpful thanks
Fabulous as always Rusty, really appreciate the time and effort that goes into your videos. Will try this one out with my e-gravel bike - is that allowed, not sure but hey I'm 67 now so I'll cut myself some slack! Keep up the good work. 👍
My respectful contribution would be to suggest you look at the cassette/derailleur of your gravel bike for a lower option. Also that perhaps your mtb is too small. Your knees and wrists align - which suggests you need a 70/80 stem... Good riding!
So, this is how it was in times BC (before commentary) and BB (before Bianchi). You've come a long way since, both in distance and video production quality - nice to see the evolution. You'll be on an e-bike next .....
Nice route and great vid Rusty. I wonder whether you find yourself running out of gears on the 1 x Bianchi, at either end. Also, whether the rougher sections would be more comfortable on a hardtail. Of course with a MTB you would sacrifice speed on the flatter sections. Each has its benefits I guess.
The 1x groupset definitely has limitations on some of the steeper sections in Scotland for sure - especially when the bike is loaded up! The top end speed isn't really an issue as I don't tend to bomb around that much. It's definitely less cut and dry between what is a gravel bike trail and what is hardtail in Scotland. Usually the route needs both bikes at some point...
Just discovered your channel 2 weeks ago and I spent a very relaxing hour watching your first Scotland from above the scenery and music combine to take you on a wonderful journey over this beautiful country the drone footage is first class so smooth. What kind of drone do you use ?
Hi, welcome along! The drone is a DJI mini 3 pro. It's called Frank and he does all the heavy lifting on my videos!
Enjoying your videos and your constant mispronouncing of Scottish words😂 also glen lyon might be the longest GLEN how ever Loch Ness is the longest Loch! Two different things🤣
Ever fancy a mountain biker for company give me a shout
Cheers!! I am struggling to get time to get out currently. Going a bit crazy!
@@RustyRidesGravellife is busy bud.
Love the music very relaxing
Unnecessary facts are a welcome feature - I like the nuggets of history, geography etc. as they provide an extra layer of interest. Cycling videos that focus only on the route, terrain, kit, distance etc. can become a bit dull after a while. Putting the route into a wider context allows you to differentiate your channel from the 'pure' cycling fodder, of which there is ample on YT. Enjoyed the video and will give the route a go; thanks for sharing.
Once again, your route highlights 'new' trails in an area I thought I knew well. Thanks for the time and effort you put into exploration and filming.
The first time I did Laggan to Sannox, I was covered in ticks!
Thanks for the great review! I‘m riding a Bianchi Arcadex as well and I‘m loving it 😍 Mine is equipped with Campagnolo Ekar 1x13 (10-44 Cassette). Enjoy riding 🚵🏼♂️
Great video and helped me choose a gravel bike, thanks.
Amazing footage!
Some pretty remote and rugged country there, some of it more suited to a mountain bike as others have said. This vid shows the limitations of a gravel bike on more broken terrain. If you are into geology you'd enjoy the Berwickshire Coastal Path - it runs close to Hutton's Unconformity near Cockburnspath.
A really enjoyable video - great balance of POV/roadside/handheld filming and helpful narration around the route and the conditions. A special shout-out to Frank for the spectacular aerial shots; watch out though, he's going to want his own channel. I cycle that area often but still found 'new' and interesting sections here, which I'll explore asap. Thanks for another quality film.
Just found this one Rusty - terrific video, particularly the drone footage, and hats off for braving those conditions, when most of us would consider it too cold for cycling. Risking frostbite and falls on the ice to show East Lothian in these conditions shows great commitment, so well done. I hope you gave the bike some TLC after this one.
A great comeback Rusty - fantastic route, informative commentary and bags of enthusiasm. You should take a 1 year break more often. Just kidding.
The way this weather is going, it looks like I am on another extended filming break!!
Wow, the scenery is so beautiful!
❤
👏👏👏
❤
Thanks for the route suggestion - did this today ( without the falls of branklin bit at the start, just straight up the road). After all the nice weather the last few days, was disappointingly low cloud today, but was quite atmospheric as the windmills appeared out of the mist 😂
In September 2024 Rusty had 2.63k subscribers. Excellent
Gravel bike, you say? I have used a Dawes hybrid with 700x38c marathon plus tyres for years...
Hey Rusty, If you could do it again and you had acces to a light full suss mtb or a gravel bike what would you choose?
Hey, on the western side, gravel bike for sure. The eastern side has sections that are pretty challenging for a gravel bike and a mtb would be better. However, on balance, I would, overall take the gravel bike as it feels faster for me. But that's me and your mileage will very 😀
A big day Rusty, with plenty of climbing - great effort! I've done the Minch Moor route along the Old Drove Road on a mountain bike; good to know it's doable on a gravel bike. The continuation of the Southern Upland Way from Traquair to St Mary's Loch gave some nice riding too, and quit a bit of pushing!
Just completed this route today! Beautiful and truly a blessing to see. I would not suggest doing this route past mid September into winter as the water crossings in the first 2 miles of Glen Almond were getting higher, especially with the increased rain lately. There was a lot of mud and the tracks were deep into water in the grassy section. It was a real adventure and had to carry the bike on the back to cross one of the streams just a bit up away from the path. Right before the gate within the long and taller stone wall. Other than that, I had to force myself not to stop so often to take pictures. Rusty, thank you for putting this together! You absolutely got my support. I used a gravel Ti bike with 42 (45-46mm in my HED rims) S-Works pathfinders. No spills and traction/control was superb, there are plenty of baby heads, knuckles everywhere and sharp rocks. Maje sure you come prepared and with proper gear.
It sounds like you had a real adventure! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
A really nice video Rusty, well put-together and very helpul and informative for anyone wanting to follow in your tracks. The effort involved in the ride alone would be enough for most folks, so much respect for filming the trip and keeping your cool, mostly!
Great route and video! Do you think it would be possible to do this on just 40mm gravel tyres? I have an all road bike that can take a max of 40mm tyres.
I probably wouldn't risk it. But you can still get up there via the road at the East end - that might be more suitable maybe.
Hi Rusty Just come across this video. Great memories of riding this route twice, both times from Ardgarten going clockwise. First time was in late 90's and then again in 2008. At the time I had a fairly basic MB with no suspension but a great trip with fantastic views if the weather is good. Doubt I could repeat it now!! ATB Paul
