I'm taking a break from YouTube
There is a lot going on over the summer and autumn, a lot of events, a lot of writing to do, and a lot of commitments, so something has to give. I won't have time to make videos so I'm taking a break for a few months.
I'll be back with a livestream in September for the readalong on the channel for The Shadow of What Was Lost by James Islington, so keep an eye on the community tab for that.

“Talk of goblin stories, Seoman! The White Arrow, the black sword, a golden ring AND a Sithi seeing-glass - you are so weighted down with significant booty that you will clank when you walk!”😄 Here are my list of notes and references I caught: First, a few references from my list from “The Dragonbone Chair” worth repeating: Ingen Jegger: Norwegian “ingen jeger” (“no hunter”)/ “ingen jeg er” (“I am Nobody”, akin to Odysseus’ alias when meeting the Cyclops) Hern: (King) Herne the Hunter, the leader of the Wild Hunt in British Myths Hernystir: Tir “Land” in Gaelic, so “Hern’s Land” Sithi: Aos Si/Aes Sidhe, Irish name of a Mythical Supernatural Older Race of Elves/Fairies (“daoine sith” in Scottish Gaelic) Fire Dancers (+ The Rasputin-like “Red Priest/Wizard” Pryrates): The Red Priests of R’hllor/Lord of Light, George? 😄 Also: In addition to Rasputin, a possible inspiration for Pryrates is Francois Prelati, a Cleric and (claimed) Demon-summoning Alchemist, who was the Partner in Crime of Gilles de Rais, the infamous French Medieval Knight and Mass Murderer of Children and Youths in claimed Satanic Rituals The Thrithings: The Huns, the Magyars and other raiding steppe peoples with a Slavic touch (part of the inspiration for the Dothraki in ASOIAF?) The Hyrka: Romani/Rom(a) People Skodi: Elements of the Witch Circe in the “Odyssey” and Fagin in Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist” Dwarrows: “Dwarfs” as imagined by Jim Henson and HP Lovecraft (as a race that previously served the Sithi, a less hostile take on the horrific Shoggoths’ slave rebellion against the Elder Things in “The Mountains of Madness”) Niskie & Kilpa: Scottish Selkies (“Seal-folk”, seal-shapeshifters: In Norwegian; Harbour Porpoises, small whales who Aristotele named as «seals», are in Norwegian called «Nise») & Kelpies (malignant horse-like shapeshifters in many lochs, linked to the Scandinavian Nix/Nøkken) Josua Lackhand: Irish Nuada Airgetlám and Norse Tyr (also burning the cakes of a commoner while undercover and on the run, akin to King Alfred the Great of Wessex on the run from Viking Danes) Storfot: Norwegian for «Bigfoot»

Rules are meant to be helpful guidelines. Don't break the rules for the sake of breaking the rules, but break them if necessary for the greater good of a better book.

My favorite element of this 1st book, is I think the cryptic menace of the Faerie antagonists is executed terrifically. The Red Hand, Utuk’ku, & The Storm King are viscerally fearsome foes. As a reader, you legit worry for Simon & his friends.

Among younger readers, especially those born around or just before the year 2000, most will not have ever heard of them, or read their work. I believe they deserve a lot more credit than they are given.

I have a complex hard magic system. Despite this, the system is not that hard to understand. The readers will be learning it along with the characters, so they won't be flooded with all the information at once. I chose a hard magic system because it works best with the setting/plot since my characters are young mages still learning magic. I do have limitations for magic but one of the major limits is knowledge. Maybe there is magic that could have solved a problem, but the characters just didn't have that knowledge. Personally, I do want my characters to use magic in creative ways in order to solve problems. While my magic system is taught and presented in story a lot like science- in fact some of it is even directly inspired by science- yet it's still a magic system because it is something unnatural. I don't find it boring, in fact I like hard systems with defined rules. I'd agree that a hard magic system loses some of the whimsy of a soft system, but a hard system can still be exciting especially when showing off what the magic can be used for. It probably takes a lot more work than any soft magic system. The argument I understand the least is that A + B = C being bad when that is part of any magic system with spells. If you can wave a wand around, say a spell, and badabing badaboom you've just done magic then that's rather formulaic. From Harry Potter to Mistborn, I can't think of any magic system that isn't like this. Unless the magic is completely random, I don't see how this could be avoided. Like Harry Potter, my story takes place at a magic school where young mages learn magic. While I love the whimsy of Harry Potter, I always found it odd how soft the magic system was and thought a hard system would make more sense since having a science feeling magic system pairs well with an academy setting. So, that's what I decided to do: Magic school set in a DnD/anime inspired fantasy world. My magic system is very visual with runes and sigils so that the readers can see a spell since my story will be a comic. What I've been stuck on is how to introduce the magic. Something I've realized is that I'm a writer that likes to build up to important parts of my story and sometimes I do this when it's not necessary. I believe important parts of my story should end up being the most memorable, so I end up overthinking it. Recently, I moved on from worldbuilding to story building, but I just haven't been able to decide how to introduce the magic system in a memorable way. The major problem is that it's hard to know what will be memorable.

I’ve been trying to get an agent for my novel for some time now. The feedback I get from most of the agents is that the writing is good but they don’t know how it will fit in their existing collection of books. My book’s about sex (human) trafficking in London and grieving friends of a girl that gets kidnapped. I hope that doesn’t mean my because I’m is rubbish. I think it’s that my book’s not very marketable.

    • @StephenAryan44
      @StephenAryan44 Місяць тому

Perhaps it is too niche. In order to be traditionally published, most of the time, there has to be some titles it can be compared with, so the publisher knows how to market it, what the readership is for it, and how well it might sell. Agents know what editors are looking for as they talk to them often, so maybe this kind of book is currently not in favour.

Brilliant topic that really needs to be discussed more. It not only provides a skill set for problems to solve but also demonstrates the kind of relationship the character has with their society based on the service they provide. I needed to give one character a motive to travel for the sake of plot, so I made him a cartographer of floating islands.

Great discussion! I have finally finished my own list of notes and associations of references (and, in all good spirit, stuff that GRRM homaged in “ASOIAF” 😅😄), apologies if I repeat stuff already mentioned: Prester John: Mythical Medieval Christian King in the “East” (Asia/Africa), many of the Portuguese Expeditions to India and East Africa sought to find him and his kingdom as a potential trade partner and ally against the Ottoman Turks Erkynland: Anglo Saxon England and names Warinsten names: Biblical of origin Hernystir: Celts Rimmersmen: (Christianized) Vikings Nabban: Medieval Italy Beornoth: Ætheling mentioned in the Anglo Saxon Chronicle Colmund: Ceolmund, 8th Century Bishop mentioned in the Anglo Saxon Chronicle Eahlstan: 9th Century Bishop mentioned in the Anglo Saxon Chronicle Eglaf: 11th Century Swedish Nobleman mentioned in the Anglo Saxon Chronicle (Elian, brother of Ulf Jarl) Ethelferth: Royal herdsman mentioned in the Anglo Saxon Chronicle Freawaru: Daughter of King Hrodgar in “Beowulf” Haestan: Hastein/Hastingus/Hæsting, Viking (Danish) Chieftain mentioned in the Anglo Saxon Chronicle, raided France & the Mediterranean with Bjorn Ironside, defeated in England by King Alfred Hephzibah: Hebrew “My delight (is) in her”, 1) Queen of Judah, wife of King Hezekiah 2) In Jewish Medieval Apocalyptic Literature the Warrior Wife of Nathan, son of King David and Bathsheba, slayer of multiple enemy kings and mother of the coming Messiah Hruse: Old English “ground”, appears in Anglo Saxon Texts such as “Beowulf” & “The Wanderer” Malachite: Copper carbonite hydroxide green mineral Ordmaer: Ordmær, Anglo Saxon Earl and Father-in-Law of King Edager and Grandfather of King Edward the Martyr Sangfugol: Norwegian “Songbird” (Bokmål: “Sangfugl”, Nynorsk: “Songfugl”, dialect: Songfoggel) Towser: Sargent Towser from “Catch 22”, Major Major’s assistant and de facto head of the Squadron Bagba: The Dagba of Irish Mythology, Chief Deity of the Tuath Dé Danann (+ Togo Spirit mentioned in James Frazer’s “The Golden Bough”) Cryunnos: Cernunnos, Celtic Horned God Hern: (King) Herne the Hunter, the leader of the Wild Hunt in British Myths Hernystir: Tir “Land” in Gaelic, so “Hern’s Land” Murhagh One-Arm: Nauda “Airgetlam”/“Silver-hand”, King of the Tuath Dé Danann Rhynn: Lost God in Michael Moorcock’s “Corum” stories: The Magical Eye of Rhynn is given to Corum to replace his lost eye Bindesekk: Norwegian “Bounded rucksack” Dror: Thor, the Norse God of Thunder & Champion of Mankind Einskaldir: “Ein skald”, “a skald/bard” in Norwegian (NN) Fingil: Fingal (aka Finn McCool, the Celtic Hero) in James MacPherson’s “Ossian” (while it today is highly contested for its validity, it greatly popularized Irish mythology in the 18th Century , for example Napoleon Bonaparte greatly cherished his copy in Italian) Frayja: Freya/Frigg, Norse Goddess(es) of Fertility, Prophecy, Marriage & Motherhood Hengfisk: Hengist, the first Anglo-Saxon warlord of Britain Ingen Jegger: Norwegian “ingen jeger” (“no hunter”)/ “ingen jeg er” (“I am Nobody”, akin to Odysseus’ alias when meeting the Cyclops) Isorn: Norwegian “Isbjørn” (“Ice Bear”- Polar Bear) Jarnauga: Norwegian (NN) “Iron Eye” Löken: The Norse Trickster God Loki/e plus Logi (the personification of “Fire”), whom Loke lost to when challenged to an eating contest at Utgard-Loke Memur: Mimir, the Wisest Jotun in Norse mythology Nisse: Scandinavian Folklore Creature Udun: Odin, Norse Chief Diety + Idun, the provider of the Apples of Immortality for the Norse Gods (+ Udun, fortress of Morgoth in the “Silmarillion” & valley of Mordor in “Lord of the Rings”, Sindarin “Dark Pit”/“Underworld”) Adeon: Adonai, one of the Hebrew names of God Nuanni: Neptune (with a Mesopotamian twist to the name?) King Lluth: “Lute”/“Flute”+Lugh/Lleu Llaw Gyffes, Celtic mythic Heroes of Irish and Welsh Myth respectively. Raed “Council”: Norwegian “Råd” Hünen “Giants”: The Huns The League of the Scroll: Similar to the White Lotus in “Avatar: The Last Airbender” ( and the Edan Trilogy?) The Storm King, eh George? 😁 (though to be fair again, a storm/sky diety (representing good/life/order) fighting a dragon/great worm (representing evil/destruction/chaos), appears in multiple mythology tied to the reconstructed Indo-European concept of “Chaoskampf” White as the colour of mourning among the Sithi: Similar to many Asian Cultures The Red Hand, five red hooded servants of the Storm King: The Red Hand of Ulster, the Nazgul & the Horned King (of the Chronicles of Prydain)? nice ^.^ i think for quite awhile i've had the distinction in mind of "you're technically a writer as long as you regularly write but you're only an author upon reaching the end goal of writing". So i can kinda say i'm a writer but i can't say that i'm an author. Great thing though is the story i'm currently on is going better than any before and i'm really excited about it. i think a combination of finding the exact genre/type that works for me and being in a better living situation is making a big difference plus adding a sticker chart in addition to a group wordcount chart i was doing before. I found out that keeping a chart that does daily, weekly, monthly, etc. rolling over into the next section with little stickers (i just copy-paste an image) is a pretty good structure for me instead of a day-month that resets every month with no markers of hitting a goal or not. i mostly use WriteRush for the rough parts (the sound effects are fun and it helps me split things apart to count words, as well as keep some notes handy). Then at the end of each week (at least) copy it over to the more secure Word knockoff LibreOffice. About once a month i copy those files onto a flash. I had a major section of my zero draft get deleted so i'm cautious now to back things up to more secure levels. But yea that's pretty much all i need, sometimes i use timers to get myself to focus and have things to listen to but like it's nothing fancy lol. Reading The Judas Blossom and now The Blood Dimmed Tide is also great timing (Libby in my area got them around the same time) as there's some similarities in time, place, and genre. also some other reads and even a horror movie where good inspiration. My drafting has been messy but good and i think when i get to future projects i'll use the snowflake method since that seems to kinda match what i'm doing but more structured. anyways that was a lot i'm just hyped and these videos are part of what kept me inspired to keep trying, your supportive comments in the past, as well as your writing inspiring ideas of what can be written ^.^ thanks so much

I'm working on a trilogy right now and I really needed a video like this! I too believed the myth that querying with a series is a bad, bad idea so it's good to hear that isn't the case. Maybe I'll put that novella on the backburner. Thanks Stephen!

Happy for you Stephen! Amazing hardback! So sad I can't buy hardback of The Coward and The Warrior anymore. I would pass them on to my children in the future - so much did I like them. But it is what it is.

Yeah, they all sold out sadly. People do resell them on ebay of course, but the price is always going up and up!

fun conversation from the start XD "I live just down the street" "They don't know that!" . I enjoyed listening to the two of you chat also, i finished reading The Judas Blossom, the end was a bit sudden but I loved it and being i tend to struggle with multiple POV, some content stuff, and can have a short attention span that doesn't always hold through people's world-building, you did an amazing job! Things that often would at least slow a read for me weren't a problem at all and worked great because of how well you wrote it ^.^

Animorphs represent! As a teenager in the early 00's I also relied on a WH Smith for my fiction. It was Lord of the Rings, Discworld, Harry Potter or Animorphs, and that's your lot.

This chat was so much fun! Such a classy (and chaotic) collection of authors. Congrats on the release Stephen!

I enjoyed seeing your respective takes on this series, which I consider a masterpiece of Fantasy. I know George RR Martin, Brandon Sanderson, Brian Lee Durfee, Neil Gaiman, Patrick Rothfuss, and Christopher Paolini have also heaped praise on MS&T. Krystle's take on Simon's excruciating long time in the tunnels "...and then we discover it's only been a couple of hours") was priceless! X)

Your formative reading mirrors a lot of my own - Brooks, Eddings, etc - but it was Donaldson’s “Lord Foul’s Bane” that was a bit too advanced for me at the time and I had to return it to my mother’s bookshelf. That is a very long lasting memory, when I struggle to recall my early reading journey.

Nice ^.^ library finally has The Judas Blossom so i've borrowed and started it! :D and that makes sense needing enough confidence to keep working but not so much you become a nuisance XD.
