In this video, Michael talks about the vast differences in how people talk about and understand their histories in Poland vs Canada. I describes an experience he had where 50 people in a room in Canada were talking about their grandparents and great-grandparents and just how different that experience would be in a similar room in Poland.

Jazdy z Kanady ciąg dalszy ......"Profesor Jan Grabowski stwierdził, że Organizacja Narodów Zjednoczonych lub inne podobne instytucje międzynarodowe powinny przejąć zarządzanie nad działającymi w Polsce placówkami upamiętniającymi Holokaust. Zdaniem profesora Polacy to „zniekształcacze” historii Holokaustu.
Hej Witaj!
Thank you for your bravery to record your video. Poland had many minorities before WWII. My husband's family (widow of Auschwitz prisoner, who died there) kept the Jew family at her house during WWII. She risked her life & life of her children. Jewish family was saved, they developed a friendship for life. They survived because of involvement of many from the area, and after the war they moved to Israel. Not many mention 6 mln Poles were killed during WWII. History separate us to Jews and rest. Many Poles, with surviving Jews, were fighting arm to arm, against Nazi. During WWII helping underground Polish army was as risky as helping Jews. I was not thinking about number of these people being involved. WWII was not a quiet, somewhat save time for anyone in Poland, especially for Jews, scientists, leaders, priests who were targeted. Before WWII, our grandfather, was married to the Jewish lady. I do not think it was very unusual. Nobody payed attention to family national or religious background. We find out about it while building the family tree. Discovering reality of our past, out of outside noise is the fascinating journey.
I can't trace my ancestors beyond my great-grandparents and I don't even know all 8 of them. My grandma was an orphan. They were all Polish AFAIK. But when I look in the mirror, I bear a lot of similarities to you, Michael (except much less hair and what is left is grayer), so I might have some Jewish ancestors. Who knows?
there are people with foreign ancestry in Poland. Not many, but people did migrate. I met people in Poland whose ancestors were Russian, German, Czech, Hungarian etc.
I wish we had the same multicultural society we once did. While homogenizing a country might seem like a safe approach, the Soviets and Polish communists sadly effectively put an end to the Polish-Jewish history after the Holocaust I have a question for you. Since antisemitism in Poland is evident, and I’ve watched one of your videos about it, I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on the rise of antisemitism and Nazism in Germany, particularly with the AfD. Polish antisemitism, while disgusting and intolerable, often feels like more of a misguided hoax. I’m not sure if that’s the right word. My Polish-Jewish grandparents survived the Holocaust by pretending to be Lemko/Ruthenian, and the rise of the AfD makes me far more anxious than the typical Polish antisemitic rhetoric, which seems ingrained in the lower class through decades of propaganda (not to excuse it, of course).

I like your sense of humour, understanding for very problematic polish-jewish relationship, but sometimes i just don't agree with your opinion. Keep up with good work.
Well, history made us Polish. Many people from Ukraine before the war didn't even identify with their country and nation. You want to understand Polish people? Learn the history first.
Oops! Chief Rabbi of Poland is from NYC
Actually most Poles come from somewhere else too, it just happened so long ago we don't pay any special attention to it. My own family came from France in the 18th century, Lithuania and Royal Prussia (the latter means they were Polish but German speakers). Poland used to be the melting pot of Europe where people from all over the continent were coming and if you ask people around many will tell you that their ancestors arrived from somewhere else. But it's not our recent history, so we don't see it as a part of our identity. Also, Poles see national identity differently. Unlike Polish Americans who feel Polish for all the wrong reasons (i.e. thinking that they have some kind of Polish blood) we are Poles for cultural, historical and linguistic reasons. You are Polish because you speak the Polish language and share values and ideas with other Poles, and not because of your DNA. So even though I know a part of my family came from France I don't feel French because all my upbringing is Polish.
Yeah, it was a big suprise for me to find out that I'm actually Dutch and Jewish in large part of my genetics. But it would just sound bizzare to actually call myself either of these ethnicities.
Racja...to proste ,jesteś Polakiem jeżeli mówisz po polsku i podzielasz wartości i idee z innymi Polakami. Wspólna świadomość narodowa, czyli poczuciem przynależności do wspólnoty definiowanej aktualnie jako naród. Część mojej rodziny też przybyła z terenów obecnej Francji i Niemiec a jestem Polką i czuję to całą sobą, jestem przesiąknięta polskością .kiedy mówię ...szeleszczę jak polskie drzewa.
Sir you forgot to address the fact cheddar pierogi are an abomination and crime against humanity 😂😂😂 points deducted 😂😂😂
hahaha!
Building a new nation would be hard without making citizens forget their roots. It's sad, but also understandable. Jews tend to be more resistant to such assimilation.
Interesting differences, I guess that disconnect happens eventually. Probably how new ethnicities start, one getting disonnected from their homeland and mixing in with other who too are disconnected from their homeland and now are something new. There wasnt alwaays Polish or always German, they probably broke off from other mainstream tribes in the begining. Amazing all this variation from 1 anscestor. Still doesnt make sense but according to the DNA all life is realted , sharing some DNA with each other, humans sharing 99.9% with eahc other. We are basically clones with a 0.01% error rate on a genetic scale, trees and ants are brothers and cousins. We'll need to find alien babes to shake up the gene pool , eventually all this inbreeding is going to yield nothing new.
Pozdrowienia z okolic Toronto!
Nice try Michael 🤣😜 Well you're not getting any compliments from me, But how about I'll go round talking behind your back about how great you are ... no wait... i mean terrible 🤣

Pecisely, the Olympic Games. In Poland most people know what and where Calgary is mostly due to recalling those Olympic Games in Calgary. ;-)
I’m Polish and I’ve known about Alberta because, when I was little and the first Jurassic Park came out, I really got into dinosaurs and the Albertosaurus was found there who is a cousin of the TRex.
Is it a faux pas to say someone's just Canadian if they are not indigenous?
No it’s ok
Since I believe in God, who is the great director of human history, using nations as actors in his play, I am convinced that each nation has its role to play in this drama. The history of Israel shows this clearly - how important in the history of the world is the role of a united nation with a mission received from above... and was aware of it. I think, therefore, that nations aware of their history, constituting the majority in a given state, will be - so to speak - a different kind of instrument in the hand of God than those "nations" that are a mixture of ethnicities and cultures.
How recent stuff done by Israel goes in your theory? What is God (which god) trying to achieve there?
@@ololo518 I am a Christian, specifically a Catholic, so I claim that Israel was fulfilling the will of God until they decided to get rid of His Son and not fulfill His will... and with that they rejected the will of God and went their own way. What is happening now in Palestine and the surrounding areas is just a consequence of that decision of theirs from 2000 years ago.
Bo to mnie więcej wynika z twojej wypowiedzi.
The history of Israel shows this clearly.....ua-cam.com/video/dmfSZ2dAl2c/v-deo.html
Hi , from Mississauga
Hi
Damn Cenadians
Er… the story of Anne of Green Gables unfolds on Prince Edward Island. That's the island in the Gulf of St Lawrence, on the Atlantic side of Canada.
I'm aware.
I think it's good to know one's family history, even though it might be complicated.
Very interesting comparison.
That's right, damnit! You tell them!
One look at you and: PASZPORT, DLA PANA???? NASTEPNY PROSZE!!!
Damn right, down with heresy!
Focusing a lot on history is due to many historical traumas Poland and Polish has experienced. It is a very much a parallel with anyone who is experiencing a personal trauma. Remembrance is very important, but too much of it can lead to a certain stagnation. It just is what it is. But you know this.
I guess my roots are different, because my great grandparents and great great parents were: Jewish, Armenian, Ukrainian, Russian, Austrian, Italian, and Polish. There is possibly some Latvian connection too.
It's absolutely the best when they call it "russian pierogies". Every time I feel like my blood is boiling
Pierogi Ruskie is what you call potato and white cheese pierogi in Poland. So be kind enough and ...
@@janwojtyna3392 learn English
@@5fr4ewq bish please my English is better than what most Americans (and definitely better than what most Poles) speak. Further, since we are exchanging pleasantries, "pierogi" is a plural form so adding "-es" is completely pointless. The reason why I omitted that part from my previous comment, is simple. It was already made, hence bringing it up again is pointless. What is an absolute travesty and what makes the product an abomination is adding cheddar to potato stuffing. Recapping potato white cheese (ziemniaki z twarogiem) pierogi are called pierogi ruskie and in English that makes them Russian Pierogi. It doesn't mean they come from Russia, it is just the name they were given and is related to the part of Poland that was called "Rus Czerwona". What was pathetic, was the attempts by some people to rename this dish as "pierogi ukraińskie" "Ukrainian Pierogi" after February 2022....
@@janwojtyna3392 What got you so mad? Did you even bothered to read my original comment? If you want to annoy other people do it elsewhere
ruthenian pierogs 😉
Poland is a country of emigrants, Canada is a country of immigrants. Who on Earth would be surprised by that? That's common knowledge.

There is a concept of "generational DNA". I think understanding your roots deeper is some kind of therapy by which we learn what affected our personalities in past generations (The theory is that there is an effect. Your desire to connect to it is not just curiosity.
