I have an interest in Ham and Shortwave Radios.
Demonstration of the Kenwood TH 21AT. Featured in the Die Hard Movie
This is a 2 Meter H-T from about 1985. It puts out 2 watts on High Power and 1 watt on Low Power. As you will see in the video, it still works as designed. I charged the battery using 2 methods. I forgot to show that I found a power cube with the correct connector that is center pin negative. We adopted a kitten today. She tries to steal the show.

Need Help Diagnosing My Zenith Trans-Oceanic Royal 7000-1 No Audio Output
Переглядів 842Місяць тому
Here I have a Zenith Trans-Oceanic Royal 7000-1 that has not audio output, and the Broadcast Band is not working. When powered on, I saw the Tuning Meter reacting, so I plugged some amplified computer speakers into the Tuner Output jack on the back of the radio, and audio came out on all bands save BC. The transistors are socketed, so they are easy to remove. I tested the two output transistors...
Demonstration of the BEAUTIFUL Zenith Trans-Symphony Royal 2000

The Zenith Trans-Symphony Royal 2000 was America's first all transistor portable FM/AM radio. It was introduced in January 1961 at $189.95 but was later dropped to $149.95 in October. The radio has 3 built-in antennas: a Wave-Magnet AM antenna. a concealed FM antenna, and a beautiful telescoping dipole FM antenna. To accomplish the deep rich sound, the designer, Gordon Guth, flipped the chassis...

Zenith Trans-Oceanic R600 Demonstration
I worked the space shuttle with one of these de n4xyc
Beautiful radio!
My filter cap has all the wires cut off underneath. Could someone of rewired without that cap ? Still hums but does fire up.
Everybody always says to cut the capacitor out in order to improve high frequency response on the speaker
I own one. It is a nice-Looking radio and it sounds great, but Zenith really blew it on the dials. It should have had one long linear scale instead of two low-resolution circles that are nearly useless.
That is a thing of beauty!
So is your mom
I had this same exact issue with the same radio…either Q101, Q102, or Q103 was bad, I can’t remember which one, but after replacing the transistor the am came back loud and clear. Hope this helps.
I just picked one up but mine has no sound but batteries seem to show charge. I have no power cord. Why do you have one D battery in bottom right side using the power cord or does it need both? I have no manual
The one battery is for the dial and chart lamps. The power cord does not light them up. Most Zenith Trans-Oceanics are like this, even the tube ones. First slide the bottom slide switch left and tell me if the dial and flip up chart lamp lights up. Then slide that switch to the right and read the battery level in the Tuning Indicator at the top of those switches. The radio has to be turned on. I'm not sure why you have no sound. I'm still trying to diagnose mine. Maybe buy some fresh batteries and try again. If still no sound, try what I did and plug a pair of powered computer speakers into the back. If this works, you will probably only hear one speaker unless you have a 1/8" stereo to mono adapter.
@vtradio Hi. The battery level shows all the way, the tuning also lights up. When I got this the battery compartment had one lil blue capacitor inside loose. And I also noticed missing screws for the back cover, someone worked on it. When I plug headphone in front I can hear static sound from speaker. I believe it has something to do with the missing capacitor left inside it
I have two of them and never use them, very well made how ever. Not many around these days, I have several 1000 and 3000 also... u looking for any more??
Thank you for writing. I have several models of the Trans-Oceanic. I have neither the 1000 nor the 3000. Thank you for the offer, but I shy away from those two models because of the antenna in the handle. Plus, I have too many radios now.
Beautiful radios. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the nice comment.
Replace the speaker
Thank you for the advice. I just now checked the speaker by feeding some audio into it from another radio and it is working as designed.
The white and black speaker cables goes via the phone Jack which has spring loaded contacts, if they are not making good contact the main speaker is not going to work and only audio out is via the Hi-FI jack at the back.
Thank you for the advice. I will take it out of the chassis in a few days and check the earphone contacts. I checked the speaker tonight, and it is good.
Sir, your issue is the head phone jack in the front of the Zenith. The main speaker cables white goes via the
Bandswitch. Clean carefully. Speaker. Take the wires off and use alligator-clip leads to connect a substitute. Earphone jack. Contacts must close well enough to pass signal to the speaker. Service manuals are readily available. If you aren't a member, join the Transoceanic Fanatic group.
Thank you. You are the 2nd person to recommend checking the earphone jack. I don't have the chassis out of the cabinet yet. I probably won't for a few days. Tonight, I checked the speaker and the 18 transistors. All checked out good. I am a member of the Transoceanic Fanatic email reflector. I see that I have several unread messages.
love that the battery tray resembles the type used in cars 😂 shes pretty
Thank you. I've seen other radios that show a cover over it. But this is how I got it and the batteries seem to stay put.
If you can get near the volume control, try touching a screwdriver to the middle leg. It will tell if your audio is working, You should hear a click or buzz. It may be an open coupling capacitor entering the audio input. Nice looking set! I like Bob's approach.............
Thank you for the comment and the advice. I will give that a try in a few days. I tested the transistors and speaker tonight. Both good. 73 Paul AA1SU
Check with another AM radio right up close to your Zenith. Tune the other radio up and down the MW band and see if your Zenith makes any squeals etc if nothing reverse the procedure and tune your Zenith and see if the other AM radio squeals at any point across the band. If so then your Zenith oscilator is ok but your AM antenna circuit is not working. Check your wave band selector switch could be loose conection or dirty contact, check your loop antenna wires, and check your trimmer capacitors for the MW band ( you will have to isolate them off the main tuning capacitor, as they would be connected to the antenna and oscilator coils. Check your oscilator transistor( some times they bomb out at lower frequency). Check your external output socket to see if the speaker is conected there for cut off and has a dirty contact. Use your phono jack to your amplifier to signal trace from volume control to each base and output of each transistor.
I performed the test you recommended. When I tune the Zenith T-O across the band, I do get a squeal out of the other AM radio, but not the other way around. I even checked the Tuning Indicator for movement and also hooked to computer speakers to the Tuner Output. I'll have to try the other tests another night. Thanks for the advice.
loose wire on the RF ferrite core / corresponding coil and pre-amp transistor ??? Or the curious looking transistor near the ferrite core / coil. Really cool "Radio" BTW - were you picking up Brazil/ Belize ? [Portuguese ? ]. - Just stumbled across your channel on YT - Hard to tell without examining everything in person in-spite of better experiential "Logic" from others that know this model and electronics better than I do. What is the lowest frequency band this model can receive (if you don't mind me asking) - AND if you don't manage to repair this model I might be interested in an AM suppressed receiver almost exactly as is. if you might be willing to part with it - ($) or not ... @VT Radio - thanks for making this video.
I tested all the transistors tonight with a multi-meter in the diode check position, and they all checked out good. I might try switching some of the same part numbers around at some point and see if that does anything. I'm not sure what station I was picking up. It was just above 1580 kHz on the 19 Meter band. The station was playing a religious show moments earlier. But I started filming just past the top of the hour and so it had just changed. This radio receives Long Wave, which is 150 to 400 kHz on this model. I will keep your interest in the unit in mind. I want to diagnose it a little more first.
Please write to me at AA1SU@arrl.net . I am now interested in selling it as is. Name here is Paul
If that is a headphone jack that switches the speaker in and out it could be defective or the speaker.
Thanks for the reply. There is not earphone switch. I will check the speaker at some point.
I have no experience with the Zenith Trans-Oceanics, but I used to repair other radios. My approach in the case of "no audio" would be to signal trace, listening to (or viewing on a scope) where in the circuit chain the audio is lost. You might start by determining if there is audio present at the Volume control. Good luck.
Great. Thanks for the advide.
Very nice, thanks for showing us. Looks like that was a great radio!
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. I didn't bother with the typical band scan, but it's pretty good at AM DXing. I can pick up AM660 (from VT) with the radio sitting on my basement floor.
Just been lent one of these rigs. do you know how to make it stop the beeping when unmuting when its scanning memory channels? Cheers Dave vk7zot
Dave, No, I'm not sure how to do that. I have another one, but have not used it in a while.
No, I'm sorry I don't remember. I sold it on eBay soon after making this video. I just checked my old emails from DigiKey, but they did not mention any part numbers of what I had ordered. They just say your order has been received, confirmed, shipped, etc. I can check their web site later to see if it stores any history. Thanks for watching and thanks for the question. Paul
What are the POT values per POT? I have a DAK 9 to repair.
I don't remember. I just bought something that looked the right length. If I can find an old email, I'll get back to you.
Thanks for video .I would like to own one
You're welcome. They pop up at hamfests and on eBay from time to time.
anybody remember what is the bulb# and is there a led that will fit?
#47 bulb. This is a 6.3 volt bulb, not 12 volt. Yes, I see L.E.D. bulbs on eBay when I search for Halicrafters S-120 bulb. You could probably also search for #47 L.E.D. bulb. Thanks for watching and the question. 73 Paul AA1SU
@@vtradio great thanks im thinking a blue or green lite bulb thanks..
I have a 101 I use every day on 20 and 40 meters! Great rig! I love that nice tuning knob...wish mine had one!
Yes, it's a beauty! Someone saw the video and asked to buy it. I sold it to him, but I still have the National NC-300 if I ever get around to building a vintage AM station. 73 Paul
I just got one of the VHF amplifiers that pairs to the civil defense gonsa communicator. Do you have any literature on this amplifier or can you direct me where to get literature? I can't find anything anywhere
Just found your comment. No, I could not find much of anything either. Good luck with your project. 73 Paul AA1SU
is the clicking when keying your paddle from the paddle, or from a relay in the amp? I've got one of these for 2m band that I picked up at stone mountain some years ago, unfortunately haven't had time to do anything with it. I was wondering if it would also work on other bands, but I imagine it needs a different tuning coil for that?
Jon, It's from the relay in the amp. I would not know how to convert it. The amp is made to pair with a Gonset transceiver. I have since sold the unit, since I could not make it work for me. I bought it to save it from the scrap heap. Thanks for viewing! 73 Paul AA1SU
@@vtradio thanks for saving it from the scrap heap! I guess I'll have to look around and find a second amp on a scrap heap somewhere :) I imagine the main difference is the big tuning coil, and whatever capacitor it's in resonance with.
@@vtradio part of why I was asking, was that the relay may get worn out quickly from doing CW with it. I'm interested in learning code, and looking at possibilities for simple rigs to use. I'm guessing I'll have to build something, which is more than half the fun :)
Thank you for sharing your experience. You have helped other from making a mistake
My pleasure 😊

Thanks for the nice comment! 73 Paul AA1SU
Select at OFF should work and will be LOUDER then 1, 2 or 3 on Select.. Adjust the variable CAP on TOP of the select box for best hiss and output when the Crystal Phasing is level. The eelect knob is really 3 powers of degrees of NOTCH Depth and the Phasing is the NOTCH. The IF knob is the bandwidth. Source: I have one of these NC-300's.
Thanks for the ideas. I will try them out when I get a chance. I've been trying to sell this at a local Hamfest w/o any luck. However, now I'm going to keep it for a vintage AM station because someone wants to buy my Hallicrafters SX-101A that I was saving for that purpose. 73 Paul AA1SU
All you need is a National NC-300 or an NC-303. No rollers. Built like a TANK.
I have the NC-300 and recently sold a NC-303 with matching speaker. I want to sell the NC-300, but not having much luck at the same Hamfest where I sold the NC-303. I have a really nice Hallicrafters SX-101A that I am keeping for the vintage AM station that I promised myself I would put together a few years ago. I have videos of all 3 here on UA-cam. Check then out when you get a chance.

I think the Signal Corps has less fading.
Nice succinct but informative video -thanks indeed for posting. I do have a very strong suggestion: you REMOVE the SELENIUM RECTIFIER and replace it with a modern electrical equivalent. When they fail, selenium rectifiers produce *EXTREMELY* TOXIC VAPORS. It’s just not worth taking the chance.
I did not know this had a selenium rectifier. I made no repairs or mods to it. Soon after this video, I sold it on eBay. I rescued it from the estate of a Silent Key. He was a ham radio hoarder. I bought as much stuff as I could before the house was sold. I went by the house a few months ago, and it had been completely renovated. I knocked on the door to find out what happened to what was left behind, but no one was home. However, I and some others saved as much ham radio history as we could over a 2 year period. Thanks for watching and writing. 73 Paul AA1SU
WOW! What a quality look.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
ill bet you unloaded it kg6mn
Actually, I sold it to Todd Bigelow KA1KAQ. He used to live here in New England but now lives in VA. I think it sold for $75. I was glad to see it go to a good home. He said that he had one already, but that mine looked in better shape, so he planned to use that one. Have not followed up, though.
Milliwatts of grid? Mine use milliamps. Milliwatts of plate "current? Isn't current measured in amps? The DX-20 specifications call for 50 watts input and you get 40 watts output? Really, 80% efficient? New record. Your meter read milliwatts on lower bands and milliamps on higher bands, novel. Why did you replace parts?
Aha! Good catch. I did not grow up with these, like you did. You can correct my mistakes when you make a video of it. I actually made the video clips in Sept 2022. Just got around to uploading it. I replaced 3 capacitors and 3 resistors, using the Hayseed Hamfest kit. When I first got it, I thought something was wrong because it would not transmit w/o the key. But after I replaced the components, it still did not TX. Then, one day it suddenly did. You said that I probably bumped something that fixed it. I also replaced the resistor in the parasitic choke because it broke apart on me. That may have also taken out the 6DQ6A tube because I replaced that, too. 73 Paul AA1SU
@@vtradio Do you go around replacing light bulbs that might go out? I had a capacitor in a S-76 receiver blow up and belch smoke and then stop and the receiver now works fine.
I had one of these as a novice in 1958-brings back a lot of great memories! Used it later to drive an amp to 500 watts….
Not short enough.
I know. I missed two of them by one second.
Why is it that sometimes we try and fix stuff and we break it more. I am guilty of the same thing.

Yes, if you set it next to your computer sound card. Did you like my picture of Brother Stair at 6:16?
I take it that the coax jack on the back was a modification? I can see replacing the heating element with a resister, that's basically what a heating element is. The resistance creates the heat.
Pat, Actually, the coax connector is factory installed. I probably won't add the resistor, but who knows, I might. I've decided to keep the radio in case ever get around to building my vintage station. I had planned on using my Hallicrafters SX-42, but the SX-101A is Ham Band only and would probably be a better choice. 73 Paul AA1SU

I just bought Zenith Transoceanic B-600 off of eBay. BC AM works great but it is not receiving anything on SW - just buzzing noise. What do i need to check to troubleshoot SW reception? Also, is it possible to connect an external antenna to this radio?
The fact that you are receiving the AM Broadcast Band is a very good sign. What I would do for starters is to go to a room, away from computers (or outside), and extend the wave rod (antenna) all the way up. If it's daytime, alternate between the top 4 bands and tune around the dial slowly. If it's nighttime, try the bottom two bands. You should be able to tune something in. Yes, this radio will accept an external antenna. Open up the back and you will see two screws near the bottom of the wave rod. You can attach a long wire to the one marked 'A'. The other one is marked 'G' for ground. Don't worry too much about that one. If you want to see the video series that I did on restoring this radio, go to my channel and click on Playlists. It will probably be more that you want to get in to, but it may give you some ideas of what to look for. If you know someone with a tube tester, you may want to start by checking those (baby steps). Installing the Filt-R-Pak from eBay would be a plus, too. I just checked and the seller is running low on stock. I need to order one each for my 8G005 and my H500. Good Luck and keep me posted. 73 Paul AA1SU
@vtradio Thank you for your suggestions, Sir. Here's my setup. ua-cam.com/video/TwdrXaBCZJE/v-deo.htmlsi=9badqcOiyo9E5CTB The SW now works great with my external Hustler HF all band vertical. 31-meter band is my favorite and, of course, it is best to listen to it at night. Here, in California, I am able to pick up Radio España daily on 9.690 MHz starting around 22:00 UTC (around 2 PM Pacific). And, yes, the radio hates all modern electronics and LED lighting, so I had to setup a normal incandescent lighting in my bedroom because I love falling asleep while listening to a SW broadcast with a little bit of static noise. Although, I don't speak any other languages besides English and my native Russian, I still enjoy listening to broadcasts no matter what language they are in. I am a bit disappointed about the lack of European stations that can be heard on SW bands at my QTH but there is a station from. Miami that broadcasts European radio shows. 73!
Had one of those years ago. Wish I'd kept it.
It is a handsome looking radio, isn't it!
This is a video that needs to be pulled down. It was a parts radio with worthwhile mods at some point. Otherwise I hope this Op has learned more since this was posted 5 years ago.
Thank you. I'm trying to learn more about the tube transmitters. I've already restored several tube receivers.
Ah you butt hurt little man
Thank you for a very informative video - I’m about to undertake a capacitor change. Thanks Dave G4NOW
