I have an interest in Ham and Shortwave Radios.
Demonstration of the Heathkit DX-20 Transmitter
A short video showing a Heathkit DX-20 that I picked up from the family of a Silent Key. It was probably built by him, too.

Drake 2-C Receiver on Phone

Here is a demo of the famous Drake 2-C Receiver on Phone during the ARRL DX Contest in March 2024. Manufactured from 1966 to 1974, it was often paired with the Drake 2-NT Novice Transmitter. It is a Ham band only receiver. However, a crystal can be added to have it receive shortwave signals.
Gonset 6 Meter VHF Tube Amplifier Demonstration (very rare)

Here is a demonstration of the Gonset 6 Meter Tube Amplifier from the Cold War Era. Five watts in should get 50-60 watts output in AM, or about 100 watts in FM or CW. This amp is made to work with the Gonset Six Meter Communicator. In the video, I am powering it with a modern Kenwood transceiver, but the receive audio needs to be injected separately back into the Kenwood via a special cable. It...

Just been lent one of these rigs. do you know how to make it stop the beeping when unmuting when its scanning memory channels? Cheers Dave vk7zot
No, I'm sorry I don't remember. I sold it on eBay soon after making this video. I just checked my old emails from DigiKey, but they did not mention any part numbers of what I had ordered. They just say your order has been received, confirmed, shipped, etc. I can check their web site later to see if it stores any history. Thanks for watching and thanks for the question. Paul
What are the POT values per POT? I have a DAK 9 to repair.
Thanks for video .I would like to own one
anybody remember what is the bulb# and is there a led that will fit?
#47 bulb. This is a 6.3 volt bulb, not 12 volt. Yes, I see L.E.D. bulbs on eBay when I search for Halicrafters S-120 bulb. You could probably also search for #47 L.E.D. bulb. Thanks for watching and the question. 73 Paul AA1SU
@@vtradio great thanks im thinking a blue or green lite bulb thanks..
I have a 101 I use every day on 20 and 40 meters! Great rig! I love that nice tuning knob...wish mine had one!
I just got one of the VHF amplifiers that pairs to the civil defense gonsa communicator. Do you have any literature on this amplifier or can you direct me where to get literature? I can't find anything anywhere
is the clicking when keying your paddle from the paddle, or from a relay in the amp? I've got one of these for 2m band that I picked up at stone mountain some years ago, unfortunately haven't had time to do anything with it. I was wondering if it would also work on other bands, but I imagine it needs a different tuning coil for that?
Jon, It's from the relay in the amp. I would not know how to convert it. The amp is made to pair with a Gonset transceiver. I have since sold the unit, since I could not make it work for me. I bought it to save it from the scrap heap. Thanks for viewing! 73 Paul AA1SU
@@vtradio thanks for saving it from the scrap heap! I guess I'll have to look around and find a second amp on a scrap heap somewhere :) I imagine the main difference is the big tuning coil, and whatever capacitor it's in resonance with.
@@vtradio part of why I was asking, was that the relay may get worn out quickly from doing CW with it. I'm interested in learning code, and looking at possibilities for simple rigs to use. I'm guessing I'll have to build something, which is more than half the fun :)
Thank you for sharing your experience. You have helped other from making a mistake
My pleasure 😊
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍
Thanks for the nice comment! 73 Paul AA1SU
Select at OFF should work and will be LOUDER then 1, 2 or 3 on Select.. Adjust the variable CAP on TOP of the select box for best hiss and output when the Crystal Phasing is level. The eelect knob is really 3 powers of degrees of NOTCH Depth and the Phasing is the NOTCH. The IF knob is the bandwidth. Source: I have one of these NC-300's.
Thanks for the ideas. I will try them out when I get a chance. I've been trying to sell this at a local Hamfest w/o any luck. However, now I'm going to keep it for a vintage AM station because someone wants to buy my Hallicrafters SX-101A that I was saving for that purpose. 73 Paul AA1SU
All you need is a National NC-300 or an NC-303. No rollers. Built like a TANK.
I have the NC-300 and recently sold a NC-303 with matching speaker. I want to sell the NC-300, but not having much luck at the same Hamfest where I sold the NC-303. I have a really nice Hallicrafters SX-101A that I am keeping for the vintage AM station that I promised myself I would put together a few years ago. I have videos of all 3 here on UA-cam. Check then out when you get a chance.

I think the Signal Corps has less fading.
Nice succinct but informative video -thanks indeed for posting. I do have a very strong suggestion: you REMOVE the SELENIUM RECTIFIER and replace it with a modern electrical equivalent. When they fail, selenium rectifiers produce *EXTREMELY* TOXIC VAPORS. It’s just not worth taking the chance.
I did not know this had a selenium rectifier. I made no repairs or mods to it. Soon after this video, I sold it on eBay. I rescued it from the estate of a Silent Key. He was a ham radio hoarder. I bought as much stuff as I could before the house was sold. I went by the house a few months ago, and it had been completely renovated. I knocked on the door to find out what happened to what was left behind, but no one was home. However, I and some others saved as much ham radio history as we could over a 2 year period. Thanks for watching and writing. 73 Paul AA1SU
WOW! What a quality look.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
ill bet you unloaded it kg6mn
Actually, I sold it to Todd Bigelow KA1KAQ. He used to live here in New England but now lives in VA. I think it sold for $75. I was glad to see it go to a good home. He said that he had one already, but that mine looked in better shape, so he planned to use that one. Have not followed up, though.
Milliwatts of grid? Mine use milliamps. Milliwatts of plate "current? Isn't current measured in amps? The DX-20 specifications call for 50 watts input and you get 40 watts output? Really, 80% efficient? New record. Your meter read milliwatts on lower bands and milliamps on higher bands, novel. Why did you replace parts?
Aha! Good catch. I did not grow up with these, like you did. You can correct my mistakes when you make a video of it. I actually made the video clips in Sept 2022. Just got around to uploading it. I replaced 3 capacitors and 3 resistors, using the Hayseed Hamfest kit. When I first got it, I thought something was wrong because it would not transmit w/o the key. But after I replaced the components, it still did not TX. Then, one day it suddenly did. You said that I probably bumped something that fixed it. I also replaced the resistor in the parasitic choke because it broke apart on me. That may have also taken out the 6DQ6A tube because I replaced that, too. 73 Paul AA1SU
@@vtradio Do you go around replacing light bulbs that might go out? I had a capacitor in a S-76 receiver blow up and belch smoke and then stop and the receiver now works fine.
I had one of these as a novice in 1958-brings back a lot of great memories! Used it later to drive an amp to 500 watts….
Not short enough.
I know. I missed two of them by one second.
Why is it that sometimes we try and fix stuff and we break it more. I am guilty of the same thing.
How true, how true my friend.
WHAT IS SO GREAT ABOUT CB,HAM,CW. OLD JUNKY RADIOS WHERE CANT HALF UNDERSTAND THE OTHER PARTY HELL,JUST BUY YOURSELF A SMART PHONE AND GOOGLE WILL LET YOU TALK ALL OVER THE WORLD CLEARLY CHEEPER AND WHEN YOU LIKE
Thank you for your insight.
Does it decode FT-8?
Yes, if you set it next to your computer sound card. Did you like my picture of Brother Stair at 6:16?
I take it that the coax jack on the back was a modification? I can see replacing the heating element with a resister, that's basically what a heating element is. The resistance creates the heat.
Pat, Actually, the coax connector is factory installed. I probably won't add the resistor, but who knows, I might. I've decided to keep the radio in case ever get around to building my vintage station. I had planned on using my Hallicrafters SX-42, but the SX-101A is Ham Band only and would probably be a better choice. 73 Paul AA1SU
It has fm uk 27.78125?
No Jamie, it only covers 143.8 to 148.2 MHz. It is 2 Meters only: no 11 Meters. Thank you for asking. 73 Paul AA1SU
What does the on/off button do? Did you hear how they f'd up 2024 Nearfest?
On/Off button is still a mystery to me. I did not hear about NEAR-Fest, so I just went to the web site. I see that it is Friday only and ends at 3 PM. I'm horrified! I'm glad that you mentioned it to me. Thank you.

I just bought Zenith Transoceanic B-600 off of eBay. BC AM works great but it is not receiving anything on SW - just buzzing noise. What do i need to check to troubleshoot SW reception? Also, is it possible to connect an external antenna to this radio?
The fact that you are receiving the AM Broadcast Band is a very good sign. What I would do for starters is to go to a room, away from computers (or outside), and extend the wave rod (antenna) all the way up. If it's daytime, alternate between the top 4 bands and tune around the dial slowly. If it's nighttime, try the bottom two bands. You should be able to tune something in. Yes, this radio will accept an external antenna. Open up the back and you will see two screws near the bottom of the wave rod. You can attach a long wire to the one marked 'A'. The other one is marked 'G' for ground. Don't worry too much about that one. If you want to see the video series that I did on restoring this radio, go to my channel and click on Playlists. It will probably be more that you want to get in to, but it may give you some ideas of what to look for. If you know someone with a tube tester, you may want to start by checking those (baby steps). Installing the Filt-R-Pak from eBay would be a plus, too. I just checked and the seller is running low on stock. I need to order one each for my 8G005 and my H500. Good Luck and keep me posted. 73 Paul AA1SU
@vtradio Thank you for your suggestions, Sir. Here's my setup. ua-cam.com/video/TwdrXaBCZJE/v-deo.htmlsi=9badqcOiyo9E5CTB The SW now works great with my external Hustler HF all band vertical. 31-meter band is my favorite and, of course, it is best to listen to it at night. Here, in California, I am able to pick up Radio España daily on 9.690 MHz starting around 22:00 UTC (around 2 PM Pacific). And, yes, the radio hates all modern electronics and LED lighting, so I had to setup a normal incandescent lighting in my bedroom because I love falling asleep while listening to a SW broadcast with a little bit of static noise. Although, I don't speak any other languages besides English and my native Russian, I still enjoy listening to broadcasts no matter what language they are in. I am a bit disappointed about the lack of European stations that can be heard on SW bands at my QTH but there is a station from. Miami that broadcasts European radio shows. 73!
Had one of those years ago. Wish I'd kept it.
It is a handsome looking radio, isn't it!
This is a video that needs to be pulled down. It was a parts radio with worthwhile mods at some point. Otherwise I hope this Op has learned more since this was posted 5 years ago.
Thank you. I'm trying to learn more about the tube transmitters. I've already restored several tube receivers.
Thank you for a very informative video - I’m about to undertake a capacitor change. Thanks Dave G4NOW
Dave, Good luck with your recapping of your Zenith!
Thanks for showing these resistors. I'm guessing they're 1/2 watt resistors, correct? I would be curious what the actual ohm reading is of the original resistors and how close they were to the stated value.
Yes, they are 1/2 watt resistors. I don't think I measured the old ones at the time.
I can confirm the Official Observer reports from my experiences with this rig as a Novice, WV2REP, back in the early '60s.
Ha Ha! That's great.
You can do some sort of internal grounding trick to keep the thing from spewing out harmonics on higher HF frequencies and possibly 6 meters. Otherwise the Knight (T-) 50 is a simple MOPA CW transmitter, and I've heard people really like them.
1r5 can be subbed for 1l6 in a pinch 🎉
I think I read that somewhere. Thanks.
I have the exact radio. It was my grandfather’s
That's great. Does it work?
@@vtradio yes…..along with my 1934 Philco….
@@vtradio yes. I listen to it every day
I've read that they never released the converter.
No kidding. That's interesting. I think there are specs to build on the web somewhere.
I have one of these too. Tone board yes but no preamp. Is there a way to remove the memory entries? I can only reach less than 10 repeaters in the area and would like to remove the others from my old location. Thanks for the intro! It was really good.
I don't have the radio anymore. I would think that there would be a way to remove the memories. If not, you can add popular simplex frequencies in there. Thanks for the kind words, too. 73 Paul AA1SU
Very pleasant video! It illustrated what I expect my DX-398 doing soon...thanks for this!
Thank you! I'm sure that you will enjoy the radio. 73 Paul AA1SU
You have something not set correctly, perhaps horizontal gain. On AM, the one AM signal covers the whole display. assuming that AM signal is about 10 kHz, the 100 kHz width that the scope provides should show signals to the left and right of the signal. Same for SSB, where you have that 3 kHz signal covering the whole scope display. In this configuration it is useless to look at a portion of the spectrum for activity, since any signal covers the whole scope display.
Steve, I agree. In part 2, I changed the settings quite a bit, and it was more pleasurable to use. I was not used to it yet, and I jumped right into making the video. 73 Paul AA1SU
your video is awesome. I'm working on the S-120 as my first project. I have already recapped it and alignment is next. TNX so much.
Rick, That's great! Happy to help. 73 Paul AA1SU
Thanks for the video. I picked one of these up from an estate a couple of years ago. Still not sure what it's actually used for.
Thanks. I got mine in an estate sale, too. I couldn't really find a use for it here. A friend wanted it, so he traded me a non-working 1939 Hallicrafters S-20 Sky Champion Shortwave Receiver. Not sure who got the better deal. 😉😉 73 Paul AA1SU
This was my first receiver and and and seeing this brings back many memories. I have one and realy want to bring it back to life. I have an ICF-2010 Sony but something about tube receivers is special. Thanks for the video.
Eddie, I really like the tube receivers, too. I also have a Sony ICF-2010 but I haven't really listened to it since I bought it last year. As for the S-120, I sold it soon after Part 2 came out. I sold it a Hamfest to a nice older couple that looked at it one day one, thought about it overnight, and came back to buy it on day two. I'm glad it went to a nice home. 73 Paul AA1SU
Some of the old Bud tube code practice oscillators had provisions for an rf pickup loop to use them as sidetone monitor.
Thanks Craig. That's good to know. 73 Paul AA1SU
Excellent presentation! Thanks for sharing. A couple of questions. First can a modern headphone with ¼" adapter be used with your R600? And second, how well do the tone controls work in adjusting the tone?
Yes, I believe that a modern headphone will work just fine with a stereo to mono adapter. I have not played with the tone controls too much. As I recall, they make a difference, but not a whole lot. Thanks for the question. 73 Paul AA1SU
@@vtradio Subtle differences in tone is what seems to be the common response... I'm asking because I can't hear any difference at all with my ZTO R600. The tone is fine as it is, but I'd like to get those tone switches working. Thanks for responding... 73
Where did you find the capacitor location chart? Could have used that on my Y600
