Looks like the Heir was locked up, according to one NPC (says "We shouldn't have made a 4th key") and the Librarian's ghost, because the foxes either finally got scared of his magic, or it got out of control - after we opened his prison, the world started to fall apart. These two ghosts are against letting him out or even fighting him to replace him. And this creates a HUGE dissonance with the fact that The Heir's saving is presented to us as a sweet Good Ending.

Tunic is deceptively dark.

I assume that all the fox creatures were originally fox adventurers. When you lose, you aren't reborn, you simply play as the next fox. The ways you die can result in possessed floating skeletons, you could give up and join the scavengers, you succumb to the miasma and guard the ziggurat, etc. The foxes who defeat the final boss take their place and are in turn the next final boss, being altered physically by the prison. Eventually they reach their physical limit and are put inside the black monuments, are stored as batteries, and keep the process running almost forever. The true ending of the game ends the cycle, the batteries will eventually all run out, but for now the island will continue ticking along.

how are you even supposed to know how to read the Tunic Language in the first place. this game is too deep for me. it's too overwhelming and gives me emotional damage, they could made the tips a bit easier.

just to add a theory I have... (which contains some spoilers...so you have been warned). There's a chalkboard in the library that shows a picture of a game cartridge with the runic words above it saying "The Universe" The story of this game, and the world you are adventuring in, is literally the remains of a game world that has been corrupted and semi-abandoned by the inhabitants of the game... both player characters and NPCs who have become self-aware. My theory is that the ziggurat is actually a physical part of the game cartridge that is manifested in the game world. As anyone who works with data/PCs knows when you delete something it's never completely gone. I think the ziggurat houses all the deleted games in the cartridge. These are the purple miasma foxes... and the purple miasma liquid is the unretrievable deleted information... the stuff that is just too corrupted. The ziggurat is supposed to contain them, but at some point, the fox society (potentially a much older version of it) learned that they were an unlimited source of power... and, since they persist beyond being deleted, the miasma must be a way to defy death. I believe this is the case because of the RGB pixels on the obelisks, which match the RGB symbols on the bosses, which are confirmed by the fox spirits in the game to be the original guards of the palace... so the RGB hexes are a symbol of their culture. The original hero who discovered this and gave birth to the new religion, became the first heir... the shadow oubliette being designed to keep the ever growing flood of miasma at bay. But being a game, new heroes always come... and always reach the end, only to become the next heir.

So... if you don't take anything from the shopkeeper, will he say something else in the shadow realm?

I don't think the 'miasma creatures' were in the zigguarat all along, i think what was discovered down there was a method of tapping into the life force of the fox people, and exploiting it, then the underground was used to sacrifice fox people into those drained miasma beings and entomb them in sarcofogus. i assumed the horrific potential of that power was discovered did they start entombing those creatures, not that they existed there all along but i could be wrong.. it seems more like a sacrificial exploitation of a creature that was never originally like that

My theory was that the shopkeeper was death itself. The manual spoke of how the heir found the power to defy death and launched the world into a dark era. I feel as if death itself has come to aid a ruinseeker so as to break the cycle and release everyone from the forbidden magic and the limbo it creates. If the cycle or ruinseeker to heir is a loop in time this would also explain why he resides in a “hole in time” as the way he can’t be touched by the effects of the loop. Meaning that he wouldn’t forget every iteration and revert to the same actions. Much like the librarian who used the forbidden magic, but still finds himself in his library ready to fight the next ruinseeker.

protip: only make the lore video once you have something to talk about.

Yes, it was there the whole time. Yes, you could have used that feature at any time. Yes, the secret could have been accessed, or the bug exploited on your first walkthrough. I watched speedrunners use the teleportation pad immediately after begining the game and yeah that makes sense, i guess but...WHAT???

With the entire game being canonically within a video game cartridge couldnt the miasma be the game code? Only after discovering it were people able to defy death, make their own creations, and learn the nature of their universe (Librarian). It could then also be the creation of viruses within the code which seep into the world and alter the intended purpose of the wildlife. Its also the "gods" of the world as the code literally made it. Digging deeper into the ziggurat reveals more of the miasma in its liquid "pure" form

I know this is a year old, but hopefully you read this. What if the shop keeper is an Heir before the current Heir? The game suggests a cycle, but i dont think anywhere says its a timeloop. The current Heir may have once been the Heir to the Heir

I ended up streaming this and was immediately immersed. Going as far as deciphering the language and starting to decipher the book. Yet nothing gave me more joy than to actually be able to talk to the foxes. Yet as I found the shopkeep and deciphered his words I was hit by the realization that you mentioned in this video. I stole from his former shop, his belongings, and contributed to his sadness. I was shaken, upset, just lamenting to myself that I added to the status quo as I picked the last of it clean. Seeing this video after, I'm glad that I'm not the only one who felt this.. Maybe.. just maybe I could do it all again and spare him stealing the last of his memories... maybe something will change.

I can't find this info anywhere so I'm hoping someone will see this and answer: What is the translation for the text that appears during the fight with the Librarian? There's a long string of Trunic under his title that I can't find translated.

Is it really being greedy if the area has been abandoned or is it the desire to survive in a strange broken land? Regardless is there any difference in the shopkeepers dialogue if you don't take anything?

This still gave me a lot of fulfillment having it all laid out here, but there are still so many damn questions in my head 😅 Have you thought more about this topic, or more answers have been uncovered a year later?

We get like five or six bits of "dialogue" from the Shopkeeper on the official Tunic deskpad sold by Fangamer! It doesn't really tell us anything but it gives them quite a bit of character.

Literally the only dialog I deciphered in the whole game. I was a bit too excited about actually being able to read it to have it wash over me like this video did.

Idk if anybody else has encountered this but warly in the game when i was in the ruine atoll i saw a miasma spider. It came out of the water between the part you teleport to on the left side by the envoy. It didn't attack. Instead it ran off to the left out of sight. I think it is just meant to be a teaser of what was to come
