How has North Star gone under the radar as the worst card ever? Sorrow's Path at least has some agency to it. North Star basically reads, "Target opponent get's 2 extra turns. Cast a Lightning Bolt. Can't be cast until turn 5."

The worst mechanic ever has to be stickers. It was so annoying and laborious to just play with that all the cards with the mechanic got banned even though only one of them was remotely playable. No other mechanic has come close to being that bad imo.

The Initiative is the worst mechanic in Magic. Even if companion might be worse, at least there is a glimmer of something cool about companion. It's a cool idea, even if it is broken and should have never made it past the 'what if' stage. There is nothing redeemable about the initiative.

Venture into the dungeon is the problem, not initiative. If anything, the initiative is a really cool way to way to make venture into the dungeon remotely good, and copies other mechanics like Monarch.

My pick is always going to be gotcha from unhinged. Imagine making a set that is meant to be fun and silly, and then putting a mechanic in the set that encourages players to shut up and avoid laughing and talking about the jokes. Truly terrible

  • @Elyvilon

in my opinion the worst mechanics are ante, for potentially being literally illegal and just stressful to play, and gotcha because I don't want to pay attention to whether someone said a number.

To be fair, playing for keeps was a big thing with kids’ games and games in general back then. I agree with you it is misguided and messy, but only if Garfield could have foreseen what his game would become. What is always hilarious to think about is the kids that must have lost black lotus in a 90’s tabletop ante game 😂😂

  • @mightyfp

Rampage belongs on the messed up cardfile list not the worst mechanics one. It was originally named berserk and intended to let a creature attack n times, plus only the first swing could be blocked. The problem was berserk was already a card name and they thought extra phases would be too confusing

Idk companion has to be up there because it turns every single format into commander. And if you dont like that format you probably shouldn't be forced to play it. I dont think its a problem with rate on lurrus or yorian. On principle I really dont think any of them should be legal in modern but here we are.

My worst mechanic ever is Gotcha. Sure it's an Un-set mechanic, but that almost makes it worse, you know? The designers didn't have to worry about power level or Limited at all, their ONLY job was to make a fun mechanic and they made the most viscerally uncomfortable mechanic of all time. At least for Epic and Ante you can just choose not to engage with them, Gotcha is just "my opponent played this and now life is miserable."

I like Cipher as a mechanic flavorfully, as it fits Dimir so well, but when the mechanic allows for a spell to be recast ad infinitum, it has to be really powered down or overcosted because the sweet spot of fun but not broken is razorthin. Cipher would have benefited from the Arena era where they could rebalance any broken cipher cards, or juice some of them up.

I think the big takeaway from discussing mechanics that are unfun is that they so often lead to repetition. Dredge, epic, companion to a degree. These all lead the player to taking the same actions, casting the same spells over and over. I’ve always been a bit anti scry/surveil because knowing what I’m drawing next takes away the excitement and the surprise of what’s to come.

It's hard for me to overstate how important the rarity colors were to me as a young player Before this, I knew that there were rare cards because I would walk into a local card store and individual cards would be crazy expensive. But in my young brain that just kind of put Magic cards into 2 buckets; it was either 1) a card I could potentially own or 2) a mythical class of cards that I would almost never see and maybe I might have 1 or 2 of in my whole collection. When the actual rarity colors came out it was then obvious to me that rare cards were something I could obtain and getting a rare symbol on one of my cards made me feel like I suddenly had this mythological power in my collection. Even if I hadn't figured out how to unlock it from a particular card yet. This was a sea change and what I felt I could do as a player with a limited bankroll.

I'm realizing, as a kid my friend group played MtG as a social thing together more than a hobby. We missed expansions all the time (I don't recall opening Exodus, if I did it wasn't much.) and it was really only on and off in HighSchool we actively tried to make decks that were competitive at our LGS, and caring about things like "standard" and "rotation" seemed alien. Why would we engage in something that told us most of collection was useless? On the surface that seemed like a gimmick to us. But off and on as we were, we stuck to the game for a long time. Playing the same game where we keep buying new cards and went to Friday Night Magic repeatedly, from 11 years old to 18, is kind of wild.
