I try to convince you why you should play Devil Blade REBOOT while refusing to review it and discuss the mind-poison of review culture; an overview of the options, mechanics, and scoring; I cover the "controversy" of the Western launch; the split between survival and scoreplay mindsets...and for some reason my thoughts on Dune 2.

    How does playing with a bat-top compare to a ball? I’ve always been curious about them, but have yet to try one.

    • @SpidersSTG
      @SpidersSTG 3 дні тому

      I go back and forth depending on the game… I probably overthink it but I think of it like an actuator at the top, plus a higher leverage point, so a bat top is a smaller actuator which can mean sometimes small movements won’t register but everything feels faster and more precise, and also the leverage is higher so your stronger against the spring resistance which can feel smoother or sometimes loose depending on the game. I have a battop that’s really high over the panel… I think an IST or a Crown and it feels like “glass”… it’s so nice, but I also feel to fast sometimes and do movements I don’t mean to do it maybe takes practice or maybe too sensitive. Trying to work out a science to it and make a video one day lol

      @@SpidersSTG that’s a really good video idea! There are a ton of video about sticks on UA-cam. But almost all of them are from fighting game players perspective. I refuse to buy anything from Terarin until they update the PC versions of their games to be on par with the switch versions. Terarin releases inferior versions on PC then updates the graphics and game balance on Switch. They need to stop this practice! It is disrespectful to PC players!

      I totally get it and respect that. I was pretty bummed buying Missile Dancer on PC. Felt like a demo. Regica puts out the Switch versions and pays for the graphic designer and they don’t support the PC version. I do think that Missile Dancer 2, and the upcoming Crystal Breaker are self-published on Switch and thus the same version on PC. I thought Terra Flame was the same but maybe not?

      Replied to this on the TerraFlame vid:) Coming from Switch it didn’t bother me, but playing more shmups on PC now I totally get it. Redneg All-Stars, Devil Blade Reboot and Astral Gunners are all getting VIP treatment on PC. DBR has been getting QoL updates every week! Astral Gunners looks like a flash game but sounds INCREDIBLE and plays like a dream. Gana Blade is probably the most “Terarin-like” caravan style title on PC and is really well made :)

    Excellent job!! I wasn't sure if I wanted to grab this right away after the Electric Underground review... I mean I have a dozen SHMUPS on my deck that I need to spend more time with already but you convinced me. So my boys and I sat down with this on the week end and had a blast. Great game.. a little easy on the easy mode but that's not a big deal. I still got my ass handed to me on the harder difficulties. I really like the retro mode you unlock later on too. Plenty of game in this thing still. The length is about right IMO.. we played through it several times already, maybe put 6 hours into it now. I like the re-playability of SHUMPS, it's one of the features that keeps me coming back. Too many games don't respect my time, they think it's ok to waste hours just wandering around trying to figure out what to do next.. not SHMUPS.. I am busy from the moment I start until I'm done and then I can move on with my life. They remind me of sheet music.. (I recall you were working on a songwriting to SHMUPS comparison video at some point) in that with sheet music I can learn the music bar by bar.. I can play through the entire thing at whatever tempo I like.. making mistakes galore along the way (this is credit feeding) and learning the ropes.. as I get better eventually I can play the game at pace and it looks like I know what I'm doing. With longer games.. especially these open world time sinks... there is no reason for me to go back. I never improve at the game because I never play it more than once.. with SHUMPS the short time really encourages me to actually learn the game, to get good at it, to learn every nook and cranny that it has to offer and the density is such that that I'm still noticing things in the background during my tenth play because I was so busy playing for survival the first nine times that I missed it. In any case.. I look forward to your Andros Duos II breakdown.. I adore that game. Cheers.

    • @SpidersSTG
      @SpidersSTG 14 днів тому

      I think you nailed the appeal! I'm glad you dig the game. It also jumped to the top of the pile for me. 100% on the respecting yor time. Snappy menus, fast loading, instead of smashing 'start' to get through the story, you hit pause to see the story... really just getting everything right in that regard. The sheet music comparison is really interesting! I never could read but I remember learning tablature haha. That transformation between the mechanical playing the right notes in the right order that sounds "correct" into actually "playing it", and then your hands and creativity taking it over and "you are playing it"... whatever that is definitely happens in shmups too. Not sure if the songwriting analogy makes it into the Andro Dunos vid but either way your getting a shout out. Thanks for watching brother!

    Thanks for sharing. I agree with the potential poisoning of the mind due to certain adopted mindsets or habits. I do very few reviews and I have never used any sort of ranking system as this feels like an injustice to the spirit of the experience waiting for each individual. As for scoring, I personally don't see this as the ultimate way in which to connect with any given game (I don't recall your exact wording), but more so a common ingredient that often contributes to a stronger link. I think it's easy to see scoring as the greatest way to know a game because of the high demands, yet there are other approaches that demand an even greater depth when it comes to knowledge, awareness, execution, etc. and I think, in general, the strongest relationships stem from a committment to the learning itself. Whether on the path of survival or scoring, I believe these still limit the experience too much compared to what can be tapped into when we reach deeper still. A lot of this will be covered in my supporter-exclusive material but this also inspires me with some ideas for our upcoming chat! Thanks again!

      @SpidersSTG 21 день тому

      Thanks for checking it out Dace!!! One of the things that drew me to your channel was your style of review and your first looks. Always being open to the experience and what the game is giving, but also the information players want to know. I’m really eager to hear your thoughts on “connecting”!!! I know you push yourself beyond the game’s rules, but I’m excited to talk to you about this. Might be a slight difference in terms, perspective, or the next veil to be unlifted and for me to learn from :) Can’t wait for the exclusive material - don’t forget to hit me up when it’s ready I can’t wait!!!

    • @Shmuptopia
      @Shmuptopia 20 днів тому

      @@SpidersSTG No worries, man! I'm happy to hear you picked up on that. Yeah, it's one of those things - reviews (in the general sense) don't really interest me or hold much value because they typically strive to help people gauge whether a game is "worth" the money, time, etc. or not - which is a service I don't require. The only times I watch reviews are if I'm already sold on a game and want to enjoy hearing someone talk about it. People who clearly don't have a passion for the game or have more negative things to say are not interesting to listen to because 95% of the time the things people complain about are non-issues to me and will not sway me from dipping in to experience the game myself. When it comes to something like controllers, I'd say there's a much higher cost involved, so it's about equipping people with as much relevant information as possible and encouraging things one way or another if they're already looking to take things in that direction or if there are currently epic deals on the go. But yeah, I'll message you soon about our upcoming chat. Thanks again for your support and enthusiasm!

    • @SpidersSTG
      @SpidersSTG 20 днів тому

      Yes!!! It was specifically the Risk System and Jamestown “reviews” you did on Shmuptopia that made me so glad you were putting your thoughts out into the ether. Everyone seemed to be harping on what they games were NOT, but you had the openness to see what was there, and that’s exactly how I hope to approach every game/experience :) I think we talked about this too but there is a total dearth of controller/stick reviews from non-fighting game players… I value your hardware videos so much! I hope you get a kick out of my next video, a very silly stick mod “how-to” :)

      Thanks a ton Angelo! You’re totally right! I actually rewatched a ton of Sajam videos on the topic when I was thinking about this. I think fighting games have somewhat solved that problem both in game and in community… I was actually going to reference GG Xrd tutorial originally haha. There’s little things too like since SSFII (I think) there is points and callouts for combos, and now even more so with callouts for counter hits, punishes, etc., so the game is letting you know there’s something else you should/could be doing besides what the buttons are called. The funny thing is, I switched to 4AM very soon after experimenting with 5AM. Still getting up at 4 seven days a week and there's no going back! Great video, man! Words cannot express how essential learning is. I don't mean in a general sense, of course but the deep learning that transforms the player. The more resistant one is to learning, the less the game shares - which is an incredible opportunity missed entirely. This is not to say people will feel drawn to connect with every game they play on this level, but being open and willing is a powerful state to maintain that creates a completely different journey that is fulfilling beyond belief. In contrast, I've observed those who are incredibly opposed to learning, practicing, exploration, etc. and they are some of the most miserable and negative in the genre. Not the kind of experience or relationship I want if I'm claiming to be passionate about Shmups. It's most unfortunate as these games have so much to offer provided people can get over themselves.

      4AM!? Oh no! lol I’ve actually adjusted to it really well and often get up before the alarm. Did a little hack too where I started feeding my cats a snack at 5:10 so they’d start to pester me earlier haha. First time I’ve ever had success being a “morning person”. It’s a really amazing observation - also why I love the Coffee & Shmups series so much exploring the mindset, because that’s where it all is isn’t it?? Thanks for watching and for all the amazing stuff you put out! I hope it was cool seeing your influence and applications of your ideas :)

      @@SpidersSTG Yeah, this was super cool. It's great to hear that you've gotten into your own early morning ritual. For most, it's a time or sacrifice that is all too unpleasant to consider, yet it's such a prime time to get at things. When I get up at 4, my first task is writing my book or episode material, then I practice, then I'll either play something to relax for a bit or check if our eldest daughter is awake - if she is, then she'll join me for games until breakfast with the others. I'm glad you enjoy what I put out. It hasn't been much lately because most of my absurdly limited free time goes toward writing, otherwise that stuff will never get done. As for Coffee & Shmups, I'm aiming to do more soon, just need more time to figure things out and record when there's peace and quiet ha! And yeah, it's all about mindset!

      I read about a lot of great writers establishing that kind of routine really helping. Did you ever get into pituitary internal clocks? The idea is people have different “peak creativity” at different times and you can actually figure it out by your body temperature - roughly sketched out a “morning people” and “night people”. Maybe interesting… I’m a night person but all but one of my 1CCs have happened in the morning.

    Not at all the video I expected, but definitely a pleasant surprise! I really loved the editing in this one. Getting up early in the morning to play for one or two hours before work is something I really love doing, but I never tried playing arcade games then. I don't think I could concentrate well right after getting out of bed, but if I ever want to reach Jaimers' level I guess I should try that

It took some getting used to, it takes a while for my body to wake up and my reflexes to get there, but after a while I think I retained a lot more and was able to think about what went wrong and right the rest of the day. Plus some days I’m exhausted after work and play like garbage lol.

    I was just looking for a review of Angel at Dusk and stumbled on this channel.. great job all around man. As a casual SHMUP lover it's really difficult to get deep into a lot of these games... but casual fans like me are a big part of what is missing in the SHMUP community IMO. Many of my gamer friends see SHMUPs as snooty and hard to get into and yet I almost feel the opposite. I can't waste 90 hours 'playing' RDR2 where I'm mostly just pressing up and tapping A then watching cinematics.. as a busy father who's main hobby is making music when I game I want to game... so if I have an hour I'm spending it with a SHMUP where every minute has me 100% engaged so that when my gaming time is done I feel like I actually did something. There are a ton of gamers like me who could potentially be fans but are too intimidated. They need videos like this and games with decent training modes so they can actually understand what it's about and not just credit feed it once and walk away thinking they got ripped off. Great video.. thanks.

      I'm so glad you found the video! I totally agree with you about the shmup community and casual fans, but I think "casual" is a bit of a loaded term in gaming. I think of casual gamers as people who "love music", but that just means listening to whatever is popular at the time. If you're looking for a deep and rich experience, you're hardcore, regardless of skill, dedication, or time put in IMO. That's awesome you make music! I hope you stick around for more videos... I'm working on an analogy between shmup routing and songwriting for a video about routing, and explaining joysticks by looking at how electric guitars work. I'm so happy you think videos like this would be useful for gamers like you! A lot of players have the passion but are losing the time for nonsense... my best friend recently had a kid, and I'm trying to sell him on the shmup/arcade style... like a "Dad's Best Friend" kit or something lol. I'd love to find a clear and easy way in for people to get in while I still have time to play and also make videos! I see you got some tunes up on YT I'm going to check them out. Thanks for watching!

      @@SpidersSTG that is a fascinating topic as both SHMUPS and songwriting are very close to my heart... songwriting more so obviously but none the less. I'll tune into that one for sure. Cheers.
