I'm in Year 11 and am predicted 7s-9s in all my GCSEs but I'm so so so passionate about art and so am kinda thinking about taking a "UAL Level 3 Applied General Diploma and Extended Diploma in Art and Design", is it a good idea? I want to be a game artist when I'm older and already have the skills in drawing and 2D digital software but I'm very lacking in the actual concept designing part. I was thinking if I just made my whole education for 2 yrs about game art (which is what this course focuses on) I can dedicate all my free time to that rather than random subjects I'll never use Should I do it or just take A-levels?

This is very confusing. Why all these options? Come on, after GCSE a student should know if at all he/she wants to attend uni. Then the preferred entrance qualification should be A Levels. If not then go along a techvoc route. Now I've seen they have T Levels...what's happening? Do they have another thing coming?

Btecs were and are crap thankfully they are being dropped/scrapped in 2024. My Btec in Electronics, two lecturers admitted they knew nothing about the subject they were teaching, I took three Btecs thinking I had had a bad experience but no, they were just crap with crap lecturers. In the end I had the head lecture/course leader admit they its just some form antiunemployment scheme for teenagers and had no real value in terms of education.

I skipped A/L's and completed my HND in Computing way back in 2005. The best decision I ever made simply because I was able to fast track my education towards the direction of my interest and get employed. I was offered internship at Avast where I worked for 10 years. I own a global IT firm now providing solutions for notable companies. No, I didn't complete a degree. It took me my HND and a lot of hard work 😉.

Hi Oliver, there are plenty of great universities out there which accept a L3 BTEC Extended Diploma for Law. However, if you wanted to apply to Russell Group universities (like Warwick, Nottingham or Southampton), you would need to do A Levels. It's possible with these universities that you could do a mix of A Level and BTEC, however it would be wise to ring their admissions teams to see what they advise. Best of luck!

Hi, how old are you [sorry if that's rude]? You have free education up until 19 years old, so 3 years after high school, so after doing year 1 of your BTEC [the subsidiary or national diploma] you can progress onto Year 2 which is the Extended Diploma? If you don't fall into that bracket you could look into Advanced Learner Loans, which offer you a loan to pay for Level 2 or Level 3 qualifications if you're between 19-23. I believe these can also pay for Access Courses, but you'd have to check that. Additionally you could take the UCAS points you have from that course and apply for Universities with 4 Year Degree options so you start on Year 0 and after that can progress onto the full degree, or if you are unhappy with that Uni you could do really well then transfer to a better Uni. I hope this helps!!!

Edu Detective it did. It’s made my think about the opportunities I was afforded, compared to my dad (who was perhaps not a working class Male to begin with but decided to go down (not in a condescending ‘level’ way) a vocational entrepreneurial route, with an added family pressure of doing it with my granddad. This meant I had 2 pressures: the dad/granddad ‘follow the lineage, get involved in a successful business at 18’ dangling carrot...whilst at the same time growing in confidence that I could go off to university, because my family were afforded more financial stability in my lifetime. It also didn’t help that my mum is Chinese, meaning unfortunately she adhered to (due to her family pressures) a leaning toward a “good” university for her son. I’m a PHD quantitative study in itself!!! Probably why I’m so passionate about ensuring students aren’t pressured to think they have to move away, or rely on cultural capital or a degree, to be a success. Success needs to be on their own terms, and is far more mentally driven than financially driven, even if young people won’t always admit it at 18 (particularly working class males). Self-worth feeds proactive decisions, as they see a future possible self that is on their terms, and led by them. I always say that if everyone moved away to be a better person, who the hell would be left to fuel their local economy? Just because I moved away to use my skills and develop employability on my terms, it doesn’t mean all of my friends should have or needed to.
