Drive Smart Dash
Приєднався 24 лют 2023
I am a 60 year old driver and only just passed my driving test for the first time in 2021. I am in no way perfect, but would just like to share some of my dashcam clips - some silly, but also some nice ones too. They are mainly aimed at Learners & new drivers, in how it always pays to look far ahead and to expect the unexpected! I try my best to be considerate to other road users & try to make any incidents a "non-event" Hope you enjoy my channel...... Safe driving out there!! 😊👍

Death Wish Deers & Squirrel!! 😲
Переглядів 4892 місяці тому
Both on the same day!! The first deer made it across with no problem, but the second deer panicked and I think (I hope) he or she went back up the way he came. I couldn't bring myself to look in the rear view mirror, as the big lorry was approaching! Then there's the squirrel - blink and you'll miss it!! Can't believe how many of these little guys get killed on the road - they are sooo fast. 😁
Tesco truck nearly takes out street light!

I can see the Tesco truck (parked in a really awkward place) just before I approach the traffic lights, so I'm not sure if I did the right thing or not, but decided to sit back, as there was a build up of cars behind him, but watch the street lamp as he pulls away - think he clipped it with his tail-end! Oops!! 😬

Clip 1 0:00 Can't always go on green! - I get the big truck has to go slow coming over the narrow bridge - but the little red car at the back, think he slipped through on a red😂 Clip 2 1:08 Another Can't always go on green - especially if the van in front of you doesn't move when the lights change, that's why I gave a little light beep. On his phone maybe?? 🤔 Clip 3 1:49 Text on screen expains ...
Van reverses into moving traffic 🤦♀️
Переглядів 5642 місяці тому
I think this van misjudged the turning - but I never expected him/her to reverse out again without knowing it was safe! - If that was me, I think I would have drove a bit further on, till they could safely turn around and come down for the opposite direction, then indicate to turn right (easier this way, as you could then see when the road was clear) 😊👍
Is it a cat or a dog?? Funny one 😂

My sister and I debating whether this was a cat or dog, a bit harder to see on the dashcam, but turns out it WAS a dog, which just wanted to roll around on the road and have its tummy scratched 😂😂

Haha, no - I just shook my head!! Had it been my hubby driving - he probably would have!! 😂😂
lol...
I think someone should follow you all the time and show you all the mistakes you make!
@edbot456 haha, I have made mistakes and even uploaded them on this channel, so obviously I'm not perfect - I only passed my test 3 years ago, but my hubby says I'm a better driver than some he's seen around here who have probably been driving a lot longer! 😆
Are kids taught the basics of Green Cross Code any more? I remember in Primary School not walking out behind parked vehicles was a big message!
I dont think any of them are, I have seen too many young people just walk casually across the road without a care. I have never seen such stupidity as in this modern age. I still teach my son, look both ways before crossing. It was drilled into us as kids. I have even seen old people who should know better doing the same. It's people who don't understand the new highway code rules.
@slock7803 I'm not too sure, but you would think so!! If I was the mini driver, I would just have waited, as it was a tight space to squeeze through because of the parked cars on my side. But good job he was able to stop!! 🙂👍
@AlexMitchell-sj4sb Good to hear you teach your son road safety Alex!! Hope it sticks with him. 🙂👍
No, that's ridiculous what they did. Had one today just pull out on me from a parking space at side of road, no indication. Had to slam brakes on.
@AlexMitchell-sj4sb we've just got to be ready for anything, unfortunately Alex! 🤦♀️ 😉👍
@DriveSmartDash this is true Nancy, even on these country roads! Plenty numpties everywhere it seems!
@@AlexMitchell-sj4sb 🤪👍
Very instructive for us learners, thanks. That guy on the roundabout- maybe he thought it was a 2 lane road exit and he’d be in the outside lane? I find big roundabouts positioning the toughest!
@slock7803 thanks! Yeh possibly, I don't think he was looking far enough ahead to see that the road narrows into 1 lane and there's the hatch markings on the ground - but as I said, the sun might have been in his eyes - it was pretty blinding (glad I had my sunglasses on) 😎👍
How tempted were you at 2:02 to call a friend or family member to come over and each park in a bay either side of the Audi? That is just the devilish side of me coming out 😈
@smilerbob that would have been good idea yes hahaha
@@smilerbob naughty naughty Bob! 😆 😆👍
Hey, good to see you back! I learned this as well "always expect the unexpected", seen just as many incidents in my driving this last week down here in Sheffield! Also a guy at work said this to me "drive defensively!". He has been driving since late 80s. That comment has stuck with me also.
@AlexMitchell-sj4sb Hey Alex! Hope the driving's becoming easier for you (even though there are numpties around us) 😆 There's another channel I follow & still enjoy watching, who have done a video about defensive driving. It's really interesting, you should check it out 👍 I'll try posting a link to it. . . . ua-cam.com/video/7Ids8S7dLvA/v-deo.htmlsi=Fe3KBTJKwNJt9fZa
@DriveSmartDash thanks Nancy, I will do. I still get nervous driving but am getting better each day. Just got to keep going and learning. Still am learning.
@AlexMitchell-sj4sb Same here Alex! Not so much nervous, but still learning 😉👍
@DriveSmartDash can't get over my nerves at the moment Nancy.
@AlexMitchell-sj4sb I was exactly like that too Alex, the first couple of months - it will all eventually come naturally to you. I sometimes get to work & think "how did I get here" - I know that sounds really silly, but it's almost as if the car drove itself!! 😆😆
As the driver of a far larger truck than that, thank you. Trust me when i tell you,we ALWAYS stop at the sheep and stare whilst shaking our heads at them
@@Grandpapiyorks Haha, good one! 😆👍
Mr or Miss Sheep in the Skoda were a little bit to impatient here
@Mike_5 I think so too 😆👍
I’m ashamed to say I did this once, on a country lane. It looked like someone was pulled into the side to park, so I over took them, only to realise they were letting someone through a narrow section that I couldn’t see. I had to get right into the bush to let them past, and felt like a complete knobhead in the process (because I was).
@Travis-guy-247 hey, we've all been there!! Thanks for being honest though 😉👍 I'm certainly not perfect either & have uploaded a couple of clips on my channel where I've been in the wrong, guess it teaches us to be better drivers. But the guy in my clip just ignored that I had my reverse lights on & must have thought "what is this stupid woman doing" & decided to pull out - but then he would have seen the truck coming & had no option but to reverse. 😆 Thanks for checking out my channel 😀👍

Very close to where I live where is a little humpback bridge, when the traffic lights are on red I stop a little bit back from the stop line just in case a bus or a lorry needs to get through.
@@WayneTulip-zm9gw Good forward planning Wayne 😊👍 I think it would be a good idea to put traffic lights at this junction, as you can see from the sign - cars coming from my direction have to give way to traffic coming up the hill, but unfortunately you can't see what's coming until you've actually stopped at the give-way line - it's an accident waiting to happen. Thanks for your comment 😊👍
I think he thought his back end was hanging out and tried to make even more room for the truck.
Good point, but if you look at the front view again from my car, there's no way he would have known it was a big truck oncoming, as we're on a hill AND a bend in the road. He could have squeezed past me if it was just another car coming up, although that would have been cheeky (and a very tight squeeze) - but when he eventually saw the truck, he had no option but to reverse back! I could also see his hands flapping a couple of times, so obviously not happy he couldn't get past me 😂
Lots of impatient idiots should not be behind a wheel
Hi mate, hope u good. Is it okay to use it please ? With credit on screen and description. Thanks, have a gooood day.
I'm good thanks, yeh no probs if you use it, but please don't speed it up! 😆👍 You have a good day too 👋🙂
I wonder if the driver thought you wanted the turn before the give way? Been there myself with that one in my early driving life, assumed one thing but was completely wrong An easy mistake and a lesson learned hopefully. If not then therebis no hope for them 😁
@smilerbob It's possible Bob, but I wasn't indicating & only had my reverse lights on for a second, had he waited a few seconds, he would have seen the truck? But good point 😊👍
@@DriveSmartDash Ah, in that case most likely didn’t look and thought they could just go 🤦♂️
@@smilerbob I'd go with that Bob 😆👍
Mostly likely the case I think. Honest misinterpretation, and no harm done. I don't think there's a need to shame the guy, we all make mistakes with the best intentions.
@clueadoption7610 I'm honestly not trying to shame the guy - just pointing out if he'd waited a few seconds, he would have seen the truck coming, so basically he shamed himself! And yes I know, we all make mistakes - I'm not perfect either - I've even uploaded some mistakes I've made on this channel. People just need to be a bit more patient 😊👍

I'm seeing this more and more together with more people taking the right hand lane to go straight on. Annoying!
@@where_is_mark it's certainly confusing!! 🤔
Definitely some folk around Aberdeen do this. I was taught that if the exit was further round than the 12 o'clock position (your approach is from the 6 o'clock position) then you should signal right.
@MacBob I get that, but shouldn't you be in the right hand lane if that's the case (while indicating right) & then just before your exit, indicate left and spiral over to the left to take the exit? 🤔
@@DriveSmartDash absolutely. but on small roundabouts with only one lane that's not possible. It does become more confusing on multi-lane roundabouts where drivers giving a right indication can lead to conflicts. The rule is to use indicators as a suggestion what the driver will do but don't trust them until you're sure!
@MacBob thanks for your comment MacBob, I've only been driving for just over 3 years (a bit late at aged 57) and although I'm in no way perfect, the standard of some drivers here in the Scottish Borders is terrible to say the least 😳 😄👍
@@DriveSmartDash Unfortunately, driving standards have dropped significantly in the 36 years I've been driving. The level of instruction seems poorer (e.g. my step daughter wasn't taught to check blind spots!) and the amount of in car distractions have increased massively. Having said that, I'd still rather drive here than many of the other countries I've driven in but that's more likely due to familiarity rather than the driving standards!
@MacBob wow, can't believe your stepdaughter wasn't taught to use the blind spot! 😲 While I was learning with my instructor and my hubby, I also followed some good driving instructors youtube channels, e.g. Ashley Neal, Conquer Driving, DGN Driving to name a few - they were a massive help to me. And I still watch them now, as I believe we can still learn something new every day! 😄👍
The driver did a pretty good job, given the circumstance. However, to answer the captioned question. Driving schools are not intended to be teaching anything other than the bare minimum required to help the student be competent enough to pass a road test. To expect anything more than that is being grossly ignorant.
@jamessv5020 They did a pretty good job at confusing the other drivers behind him (or her) including me 😆
@@DriveSmartDash I'm sure it did, if you say so. However, how is that the driver's fault? It's one of those things where our assumptions are more at fault than someone else's actions. I'm just as guilty, but hindsight is... 20/20.
@@jamessv5020 I'm in no way perfect either, and as I said in a previous comment, it could have been a mistake - I was only highlighting what a strange way to indicate if they did do it deliberately 🤔
Well I thought u have to indicate right to make everyone aware u are going around but he had to switch to left indicator when he passed the 1st exit
You shouldn't indicate unless you're going right. Going straight you use no indicator, then put on a left signal after you pass the first exit.
@jxms7207 but this particular driver in front of me was in the left hand lane (but indicating right), this is where it's confusing. Had he been in the right hand lane, there wouldn't have been an issue, or had he NOT signalled at all & carried on round in the left hand lane and then indicated left before his exit (as exactly what I did) then I wouldn't even have uploaded the clip 😄👍 Thanks for your comment though.
@cloudisfast3361 thank you!! That's exactly what I thought 😄👍
I had a "farmer with cow crossing" the other day when I took my son to countryside. We didn't mind it, it was funny to be honest, they just kept on coming though, must have been well over a hundred cows. Yeah that truck moment was definitely a "poopy pants" one!
Over a hundred cows…no bull?! (Sorry…terrible joke I know) That is one thing I love about the countryside is all the animals
@AlexMitchell-sj4sb you need to start saving some dashcam clips Alex - You will get some funny or nice ones - it doesn't have to be like some of the other channels with crazy speedsters & crashes etc. I've experienced the cows too, some of them can be the size of a small car!! Best just to sit still until they've gone past 😄👍
@smilerbob haha, good one Bob 😄👍 and I'm the same, love being in the countryside for the stunning views we get and the wildlife 😃
@DriveSmartDash I took a video of it from my phone, maybe I can upload it to UA-cam for you to see.
@AlexMitchell-sj4sb It's up to you Alex, yeh it would be nice to see, but it can be a bit of a pain sometimes when you're trying to upload clips to your channel for the first time, with things like copyright to watch out for if you have music on in the background. Or you may be having a private conversation with your passenger, so you would need to mute that. I've kind of got used to it now & I enjoy uploading my clips. If they manage to help 1 person, or make them smile, then it's all been worth it! I just do it as a hobby, my channel's not monetised 😄👍
The car would be a Ford Popular. I do believe a Ford Prefect would have a towel around the shoulders 😉 As for the first clip, those sheep are better at using all the road and merge in turn than all tge sheeple driving cars 😁
@smilerbob Thanks Bob, I was only going by what hubby tells me - he's more of a petrol head than I am, but it's great to see how well some of these classic cars have been looked after! Yeh, the sheep!! 😄 I was out for a drive with my sister & just pulled into the lay-by when I saw them coming down the road - I thought for a minute one of them was going to jump on my bonnet, but they actually behaved really well 🐑 😄👍
From a German who lives near the French border: Its a common Thing in France. Drivers usually signal left (inwards in Europe) until they are about to take the next exit, at which point they signal right (outwards in Europe).
@Bolle398 I didn't realise this (maybe just me, but I think it could be really confusing!) 🤔 Thanks for your comment though 😊👍
I'm not justifying tailigating, I want to make that clear. But I think most drivers are going to drive close behind if you are going 20mph on a 60mph straight road. I've seen a lot worse driving than what the Volvo driver did here.
Yep, I have actually seen worse too, but in this case - as I said, I wasn't intimidated by the volvo - they had plenty time & space to overtake me and then the learner (if they were in such a hurry) but as I was about to turn right a few yards further on, I thought it would be pointless overtaking the learner & putting them under more stress. (But hey, that's just me) Thanks for your comment though 😊👍
Might just be a mistake wouldnt think too much about it
I know, I did say that in one of my other comments, it could have been a mistake, but if they did it deliberately - they were clearly in the wrong 🤔
@@DriveSmartDash I've seen people do this plenty of times before (MIL also does it). I saw someone do it the other day and thought it was just a mistake, but they did it at the next roundabout too. I have no idea what the thought process is other than signalling that they aren't taking the first exit, but confusing all other drivers in the process.
@cloudisfast3361 glad it's not just me who's confused 🤪
Never trust indicators is what picked up from somewhere… not least because I used the wrong one on my last lesson!
Absolutely! As I said in one of my other comments - we can all make mistakes - it's easy done, It's a true saying I use on this channel a lot. . . "Always expect the unexpected" 😂👍
I dont know, but I know I am making the odd mistake since passing my test. I guess the next year is really my true learning on the roads. Went out on motorway for first time ever and drove my son to school this morning and picked him up later also. Got to do it, got to keep going out on my own otherwise I won't build my confidence up.
Well done Alex! The more you're out driving, the more your confidence grows (well it did for me anyway) and yes, we all make mistakes - this may have been a mistake from the driver in front - but if they did it deliberately - it's just wrong 🤔
I passed my driving test so many years ago but I’ve only ever driven in my small local town, I had 5 hours of driving lessons with a driving instructor on dual carriageways and I really wanted to experience driving on a motorway so today I went on the motorway for the first time, honestly I had so much fun.
@WayneTulip-zm9gw wow, well done you for going on the motorway! It still freaks me out slightly, the few times I've been on it, I actually prefer the country roads for the scenery (not that I'm not concentrating on the road ahead, but it's nice to have a look back on my dashcam) 😄👍
@DriveSmartDash me too Nancy!
@@AlexMitchell-sj4sb 😎👍
I wasn’t taught it but I know some that believe they were taught to signal right until their exit and then signal left. I think a discussion on other channels has shown those people to be incorrect in their beliefs and most likely someting they picked up after talking to their mate down the pub one Friday night 😁
@smilerbob haha, I know Bob, I just don't get it? He was (almost) in the correct lane for going ahead, but shouldn't be indicating at all till the island at the first exit, then put a left signal on (as I did) 😄👍
I passed Nancy! First time too. 5 minor faults
@AlexMitchell-sj4sb aww wow!! Well done Alex, exact same as me when I passed 1st time, I got 5 minors too!! But, what a great feeling it is eh!! Anyway, congratulations & drive safe (I'm sure you will though) 😄👍
@DriveSmartDash thanks Nancy! Am abit shocked still! I am 51 so it feels late to the party but better late than never!
@@AlexMitchell-sj4sb It's never too late, as they say Alex - I was nearly 58 when I passed mine just over 3 years ago now!! 😄👍
@DriveSmartDash did you feel nervous driving at first or were you OK?
@AlexMitchell-sj4sb Well that's a good question Alex - I was feeling a bit nervous about being in my car for the first time on my own without hubby or my instructor beside me - so hubby & I had planned to go on a short drive the very next day, he was going to follow behind me in his van, just to reassure me. But unfortunately things didn't go to plan - that same night, hubby became terribly sick, throwing up & excruciating headache!! I was on the phone to NHS24 explaining his symptoms & he just wanted a couple of paracetamol & a lie down "I'll be fine" he said!! However, the advisor on the phone told me to get him to A & E as soon as possible, so off we went in my car, (luckily our local hospital is only about 15mins drive) & to cut an already long story short, hubby had actually had a bleed in the brain (aneurism) then had to be blue lighted to Edinburgh to have an immediate operation, so my first time driving home from the hospital on my own is a bit of a blur, but think I was more worried about hubby than thinking - I'm actually driving on my own!! Anyway, luckily all turned out well & big respect to the NHS, hubby pulled through & although still has a few other health issues, he's still making me laugh every day!! Sorry, this is so long Alex - 🤪 My suggestion would be to have your radio on low, or a favourite cd while you're driving, just some quiet background noise and just take some short trips to start off - like the local shop & back or around a quiet industrial estate, I'm sure you'll work it out Alex, you'll be absolutely fine - it is a bit scary at first, but trust me, the confidence does grow 👍 I also still continued to watch all the driving channels on UA-cam (and still do!!) We never stop learning!! 😉👍

@slock7803 yeh, found it really strange why he was parked there, as the store is just on my left, where there is a massive entrance specifically for these big HGV's - maybe he took a wrong turn?? 😉👍
I will tell you of some insanity/idiots I was witness to in last few days. On M74 there is the exit to A66 and there was a 1 mile tailback to get on there. We were in the queue and some idiot in a crappy souped up Audi decided to brake suddenly in the middle lane as he wanted to get into the queue/tailback so he could get onto the A66 exit. Absolute numpty nearly caused a pile up. We saw at least 2 drivers pass this numpty and as they overtook him, gave him the middle finger. One truck driver actually swerved his truck towards the Audi as though he wanted to hit it. Maybe he gave him some verbal/middle finger too. Then yesterday near my home, went to cross at a junction next to main road with my 6 year old son. Paused and looked both ways and looked to see if anyone wanted to turn into the junction. There was no one so we started to cross the road. As we got halfway some numpty/chav/ned on a scooter in a tracksuit suddenly zoomed into the junction, no indicators and drove a few feet away from us. I shouted "what the hell you doing you absolute dickhead". He gave me some look and looked at my son and then me and muttered something I couldn't hear and drove off down the road. He was acting like it was our fault. I then shouted some verbal at him. OK someone is gonna say "oh you shouldn't have done that in front of your 6 year old son". OK, what about the idiot on the scooter who nearly ran into us??
@AlexMitchell-sj4sb Jeez Alex! What a nightmare - have you got a dashcam in your car? Would have been good to see that one. As London dashcam says. . . "Always an Audi" 😂 As I've said before, I'm in no way perfect, but the amount of numpties I've caught on my camera beggars belief!! And as for the scooter ned, we've got them up here too - no respect for rules of the road or pedestrians, so I can understand the mouthful you gave him!! Stay safe out there 😊👍
@DriveSmartDash we do have a dashcam and I should have put that audi driver incident on the laptop but we were knackered after that long drive from Scotland and then getting everything from the car into the house. Plus it was hot on the way back making the journey a bit less pleasant. We loved the cool of N. W Scotland (just not them midges lol)
@AlexMitchell-sj4sb no worries, I get it! It's good to keep incidents like that - for me, personally, I try & learn from them and ask the question, could I have done anything different? Could I have slowed down, held back etc etc. And yeh it can be a bit of a pain to download your footage, especially if you've got a lot going on! Sounds like you need a holiday after your holiday!! 😂😂
@DriveSmartDash should have kept it and shown to police but I honestly doubt they would do anything about him (Audi driver not numpty on moped). He was a few cars ahead of us so didn't affect us directly. Someone let him into the queue though. He took advantage of others kindness but could have caused an accident/pile up. Obviously IQ in double digits, I think the only thing I learned from it was he badly needs a brain transplant to improve his IQ.
Hello Nancy just got back from the Highlands, Mull, Kintyre. Drivers even up on Mull seemed very impatient! A lot of tailgating and then overtaking us as we went slow on winding roads. And I thought the pace of life was slower up there! Anyways, those bloody midges had a good feast on me. Other than that, the scenery was stunning (of course) and we did a good tour of the west coast. Bloody hell why was that worker at the last clip wearing flip flops 😅
@AlexMitchell-sj4sb Hey Alex, aww some lovely places you've been to!! Shame about the midges and the tailgaiters 😢 As for the workman - that's exactly what I thought - Even driving with them on is a bit risky, is it not? Strange!! 😂👍

I drove a bit on the road next to Loch Lomond (that was challenging!) and my shoes have thick soles so I stopped in a layby and said I need to wear just my socks and my wife said you cant do that, its illegal and your foot could slip off the pedals. Do you know that road next to Loch Lomond? You must do, you lived in Glasgow so must be familiar with that one.
@AlexMitchell-sj4sb haven't actually looked into the legalities of it Alex, so I'm not sure - I usually always wear a comfy pair of trainers when driving - don't think I would attempt driving with just my socks on my feet though!! 😂 But, good to hear you got to drive for a bit around Loch Lomond - certainly good practice for you 😉 I haven't actually driven up there myself, but been in the car with hubby (before I was driving) It is so beautiful - you really need your wits about you though, especially on sunny days, as that's when you get all the bikers on the road! 😎👍
@@DriveSmartDash yeah it was a sunny Sunday so that road was very busy and as you mentioned, the bikers were weaving about a bit looking for a chance to overtake. Plus all the holiday coaches and trucks on that narrow road too, it got a bit hair raising to be honest. Good practice though for me. I didnt see much of the scenery but we have stayed there a couple of times, once at Firkin Point and once on the other shore, cant remember the name of the campsite but it begins with S. Something like Sallochy.
Was someone on their phone while waiting at the lights there? Seemed to take a rather long time to realise the light was green
@smilerbob couldn't say for sure Bob, that's what I said in the description though 😆👍
Hi mate would you mind if i used this with credit to you.
Yeh no probs - but please don't zoom in or speed it up, like Dashflix does 😂😂 By all means, cut the length if you need to 😊👍
@@DriveSmartDash cheers mate much appreciated 👍 the video is good I will probably cut it slightly shorter that's all. Thanks again mate.
@dazza4017 no probs 👍
Maybe he rolled back? It’s pretty steep that drive in!
I thought that at first, but when I reviewed the footage, his reverse lights did come on for a second (see 0:38 / 0:39 ), but yeh very steep & tight from that angle 😮
Hi mate, can i use it please ? With credit, thanks in advance. Have a good day.
@Dashflix Hiya, yeh as long as you don't edit the clip - by all means cut the length if you need to, but please don't speed it up or zoom in. Thank you - you have a good day too!! 😊👍
