No.127 Trains Around Werrington Junction 16th to 25th July 2024
Views from Cock Lane and Foxcovert Road. Problems on the ECML Up Fast south of Stoke Tunnel on the evening of the 16th saw services using the Up Slow and re-joining the Up Fast at Werrington Junction. The 20th saw the Midland Pullman on the return journey from Durham to Chelmsford rail tour. A quick visit to Lincoln Road on the 24th along with many other enthusiasts to catch 37901 with an empty stock move to Yarmouth, unfortunately the heavens opened and gave us all a good soaking.

Class 56, 69 and 66's on freight. 66604 on 6Z85 1808 Peterborough to Basford Hall Yard (Fl) trailing open hoppers and sand blasting the countryside. If you are downwind it is very unpleasant. Great video Mike, fantastic variety.
Thank you for waching and commenting Peter.
Another great selection of trains. Great to see the dive under is being used more than it was when first opened.
Thank you James. The dive under is quite busy now and it does give the extra option of routing trains to and from the Joint Line when things get congested.
Up to the usual standard and content
Thank you Michael. I hope you don't find the videos too boring with all those containers.

Wow what great freight on my way to werrington p.s great video
It is a busy place at times, enjoy your visit.
@Werrington junction, how did you get to Hurn Rd north
Open the link to the map www.google.com/maps/@52.6219937,-0.2913321,456m/data=!3m1!1e3?authuser=0&entry=ttu For vehicle access, scroll the map down following the A15 Werrington Pkwy from Peterborough towards Glinton, you will see a left turn into Waterworks Lane/Gasworks Road, go left there following Gasworks Road into Hurn Road. The sharp bend you then come to near the A15 bridge that crosses the railway is Hurn Road north. There is a footpath from there that goes under the Werrington Pkwy and joins Lincoln Road. Vehicle access to Lincoln Road is off the opposite carraigeway. Google Street view is upto date for the Lincoln Road area but way way out of date for Hurn Road, it still shows the original road under the A15 bridge which has been a railway since 2020.
Excellent 👍
Thank you for watching.
Always a pleasure to view
Thank you for your support Michael.
Great video Mike, nice to catch up on a busy part of the Network.
Glad you liked the latest video, thank you for watching Peter.
Great stuff Mick. Some good livery variations from my company. Bet you can't wait to see 69012 "Falcon 2" on the sand or Toton to Whitemoor tripper 😉
Thank you for watching Ben. GBRf always seem to take a pride in their loco's, different liveries, good naming etc. Whatever you do, don't let Falcon out in the evening when that Peterborough to Basford Hall sand blaster passes the 6L15 Toton to Whitemoor as it will ruin the new paint. Before you were born I used to watch the original Falcon on the GN&GE Joint with unfitted coal trains to Whitemoor, Lion and Kestral also put in a few stints on those as well. I have seen Falcon 2 on UA-cam, it looks very nice, especially the crest. Some people are saying the paint looks too glossy where the original was more matt, although I cannot remember, the original may have been glossy and it was all that coal dust that toned it down.🤔 Whatever, it is a welcome addition from GBRf and I look forward to seeing it soon.
@werringtonjunction haha yes so let's put it on sand trains 🤣 (albeit covered). Who knows maybe Lion and Kestrel liveries next 😉
@@benGBRf That would be nice to do those, but I could not see Lion's livery being very suitable on the Autumn leaf busters.😁
@werringtonjunction haha yes Lion in autumn was mentioned and is a big stumbling block. Who knows for kestrel though. 🤞🏻
A splendid film. What camera or phone do you use?
Thank you Florence. Camera is a Canon DSLR 200D

Excellent yet again
Thank you for watching Michael.
It's 730p here in California. I'm playing fetch the ball with my Dog. Watching the video. Can you clarify "The last mail train out of Peterborough " And once again another Excellent video!!
The movement of mail has now been transferred to road haulage. Thank you for commenting and watching.
Of the two slow lines which split away from each other either side of the dive-under lines, only the down line appears to be electrified and not the up. Can you explain the reason for this, please, because these two tracks appear to be going to and coming from the same places, ie, serving the same route? Thanks on this technical point, which is not spoiling my viewing of this highly watchable episode!
The split which is Marholm Junction was created when the dive under was built. The alignment of the two centre lines of the dive under was the original alignment of the Midland Railway line from Peterborough East station (on the Peterborough to Ely line) to Stamford. Oakham, Melton Mowbray, etc. The building of the dive under on the alignment of those lines made it necessary to put the Stamford lines either side of it. Way before all of that, the East Coast Main Line from Werrington Junction to Peterborough used to have five lines going south instead of the three that are there now and going north from Werrington Junction there were four, up and down main and up and down slow. Re-modelling of Werrington Junction over the years have seen the five lines going south reduced to the three we see today and the down slow removed as far as Helpston Junction about two miles to the north. After the removal of the ECML down slow, the down Stamford line then doubled up as the ECML down slow from Peterborough to Helpston Junction where it re-joined the ECML to create the original four track ECML going north. The electrification of the Down Stamford/Down ECML Slow to Helpston Junction which you enquire about was done in the late 1980's. The Stamford Line towards Melton Mowbray is not electrified hence why there is not OHE on the Up Stamford Line. Here is Helpston Junction www.google.com/maps/@52.6355461,-0.3288863,248m/data=!3m1!1e3?authuser=0&entry=ttu Old Werrington Junction track diagram, file sbd-werrington drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/1FlmREu4584Wah-EzocIed2wWuIZksnJW More dive under info drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/1-A1162n04x6xDXVyuQbf-am4O8ps52qy Hope that explains things Mike, thanks for watching and commenting.
@@werringtonjunction Thank you so much for your prompt and comprehensive reply, Werrington. I’ll dig out my atlas later and look at everything you’ve kindly covered. I have the gist of it in my mind already, it’s just the network knowledge that’s missing. Cheers.
@@mikeuk4130 You might like this video that has just appeared. If you start the video at 3 hours and 9 minutes in you will come up to Helpston Junction on the Up Stamford Line heading towards Peterborough. ua-cam.com/video/b7zvCrYup_A/v-deo.html
@@werringtonjunction Thank you so much! Ironically, it was watching Don's video that brought my question to mind again and made me ask you, being the Werrington specialist! I therefore watched it again and this time saw the point where the down slow leaves to go back to the ECML, taking the wires with it. The up slow ECML is therefore on the far left/East side, looking South, of the whole formation in your WJ videos. I'll see more every time I watch! Thanks again and all the best. Mike
@@mikeuk4130 I'm glad you have worked it all out Mike. It has always been a busy and interesting area around Werrington Junction. In Don's video, from Helpston towards Peterborough, the first overbridge (silvery grey colour) you see is Hurn Road footbridge where I do some videos from. That used to be a road crossing with manually worked gates and the original lattice footbridge only spanned the ECML, the steps coming down on the west side between the ECML and Stamford Lines so you had to walk across the Stamford Lines. Another bit of info, Werrington water troughs in steam days where on the ECML up and down fast between Hurn Road and Werrington Junction, the treatment plant being adjacent to the Joint/ECML about where the northern entrance to the dive under is.
Excellent video so clear, and a great set of different freight
Thank you very much for watching.
Delightful and, as a bonus, some of the traction was up to normal WJ standards!
Thank you Mike. It is always good to support the local community.
Awesome capture at 20:12: Two Class 66 and a Class 91. Top job. Well done. 😊😊
Thank you Andrew. Sometimes you just get lucky with some shots, it makes up for the times when I forget to press the record button.😃
Great footage for a couple of days Mick 👏🏻
Thanks Ben. It has been a good month so far.
Great variety from you Mick. Always good to see the latest traction of what's passing Peterborough as I used to see it always passing the office and don't have that luxury now 😂
Thank you Ben It was quite a good beginning to the month for a variety of traction, let's hope it continues. I should have put a bid in to rent your old office when you left, I could have set up a 24/7 webcam and recording studio.🤣🤣 At least you still have the luxury of being 'on the job'. Keep you videos coming, they are always a pleasure to watch.
@werringtonjunction yes speak to John Smith. 😂 thanks Mick. Plenty more to come

Late to the ball with this one, great video as usual Mike.
Never too late to catch up Peter. Thank you as always for watching.
Great video, well done!
Thank you for watching and commenting.
In your videos we see the empties running back from Bow to Plasmor, do the loaded trains take a different route?
They run during the hours of darkness in this area David, usually via the ECML to Peterborough Yard then leave there early morning to go south. Occasionally the empties may return via the ECML to Doncaster rather than the Joint Line.
@@werringtonjunction Thanks
Excellent video

I've watched all of your video's since 2019 and really enjoyed them. I live in the USA and it's neat to see how trains in England work and how the maintenance crews rebuilt the junction! Very interesting
Thank you for watching all those videos Marc. It was really interesting recording the building of the new line and I met so many nice people along the way who had the time to explain the intricacies of each stage.
Excellent footage as usual
Thank you Michael, a bit more variety this time.
Watched them all ...... best one so far, thanks
Thank you Pettsy. Probably the best one for variety.🤔
This video is excellent and outstanding. The sheer amount of different engines and trains is amazing. Good job!!
Thank you for the nice comment. It certainly was a good start to June with the variety of different workings, not something we see every week.
I wonder how much sand is lost from that train?
Thank you for watching and commenting Mark. Loss of sand on a hot, dry day with plenty of wind it is much worse than what I filmed, sometimes it is hard to see the train through the sand cloud.😀
Some good catches there! Wonder why those 175s have gone to Ely?
Thank you for watching Neil. The 175's have gone for storage AFAIK. I did see another set in video No.117 and I believe I have missed some more as well. They really do go a roundabout way to get to Ely though.🤔
Great video Mick. Always good to see the best of whats on offer at Peterborough. The 379 moves have been hauled by 57306 this week. A good one for the cameras if you haven't got her already.
Thank you Ben. Caught the 57 this afternoon (Thursday 6 June) plus a lot of other good stuff today, 33, 50, 37, 69+4x66's on the Middleton Towers this morning.😁 Don't forget the Hastings units your way on Saturday.

Almost every time I go out I say to myself, I must try some different angles otherwise it becomes boring showing views from the same positions all the time. Very good work, very beautiful video! Congratulations, have a nice day!
Hurn Road over-bridge ( from above and at ground level)still as good as anywhere as a platform for recording .Some strange consists/rakes this time . Farmer's spray boom as big as any I have seen in the US -- see Triple R Farms in Alabama -- but level ground is essential if the boom ends are not to touch the ground. The industrial site to the south of the over-bridge seems relatively inactive at a distance. Sorry to see the 91s slowly giving way to 'trams'. Birds seem strangely quiet for springtime ! TC
I like Hurn Road too, it's good for seeing things at a distance and it doesn't bounce up and down like the large green bridge at Cock Lane when trains pass. Still plenty of birds around although they may have been put off by the spraying, even I could taste it. I do watch a lot of farming videos on YT from both the US and UK. Having been brought up on a farm that way of life and interest never leaves you. Obviously it is far more sophisticated now with those large machines and electronic technology, no more pacing a field out and marking it with twigs from the hedgerow so you could plough it out evenly.😀 They are still working on the Lloyds Banking building, it is nowhere near finished yet. Hopefully the 91's will still be around until next year. Thank you for the comments Tom.
Brilliant video!
Thank you for watching.
Great video Mick. Some interesting movements from my lot. Nice catch with the TfW 175s as well. I wonder if any have been in Peterborough before. Hope you are well though. Sorry, I've not been around much but I should be releasing some more interesting footage and videos soon. All the best. Ben
I am ok Ben thank you, I did have a pulled calf muscle for about three weeks after the end of February which curtailed me going out where I had to walk. Anywhere I could get to on my bike and just fall off it then start videoing was fine😆, hence a lot of previous video from the footbridge at Cock Lane. Not sure about any 175's operating around this area before. What a journey they had though to get to Ely; Swansea-Cardiff-Swindon-Reading-Ealing Broadway-Willesden-Watford-Bletchley-Northampton-Rugby-Nuneaton-Leicester-Melton Mowbray-Oakham-Peterborough-Ely, nearly twelve hours and goodness knows what the mileage must have been. Surely Swansea-Cardiff-Newport-Gloucester-Birmingham-Leicester-Peterborough would have been more direct? I will be looking forward to seeing some new videos from your channel, it seems a long time since you went off to Toton, hope things are working out for you.
@werringtonjunction ouch... a calf injury is a painful one. Yes thats one long journey for those 175s. Love to see a cab ride video for it haha. Yes it's been a while but just starting to settle now (I think) and with a new camera as well its time to give the new channel a layout and release some footage
