New or Used Guitar? Ibanez Jem Jr vs Second Hand Japanese RG (Ibanez RG470) - Which is better value?
Переглядів 6 тис.2 роки тому
Find the full demo track with these two guitars here. ua-cam.com/video/IodZ-F4sjRw/v-deo.html We live in an era of really good affordable guitars, so the big question is - can you find a used guitar that is better than a good affordable guitar without spending a bunch of extra money? Over the years I've bought quite a few used guitars and basses. I don't do it that often anymore, usually only i...
APERCU - By Johnny Cox featuring Lewis Davies on Drums
Переглядів 902 роки тому
This is a track of mine that I originally wrote and recorded in 2020. Initially I didn't name it, but I've now given it the name "APERCU". I've re-recorded most of the guitar parts with two fairly cheap Ibanez guitars so I can use this in another video in which I will compare the two guitars. The guitars are an Ibanez Jem Jr and a used Japanese Ibanez RG470. The idea of the other video is to co...

Siemy Di & Johnny Cox - Bass & Drums Jam with Headrush Looperboard
Переглядів 2253 роки тому
Siemy and I recorded this jam yesterday at his place. We're playing a slow five beat cycle, but it also has a 6/8 feel because you can think of each beat as being a bar of 6/8. I'm playing my fretless Warwick Thumb SC 6-string bass into a Headrush Looperboard. At the start of the video you see me set up the loop using the looper board. First I play the slow five bass line and then I loop a long...
Tom Pink & Johnny Cox Jamming on Crossroads

My friend and fellow guitar teacher Tom Pink came over to jam last night, we had a great time playing instrumental renditions of all kinds of repertoire from The Beach Boys to Charlie Parker. Tom is a fantastic guitar player who is equally at home playing jazz as he is playing rock and popular repertoire. At the end of the evening I turned on the video camera to capture us playing this Cream/Jo...

Tears of Rage - A song by Bob Dylan & Richard Manuel - Performed by Johnny Cox
Переглядів 4323 роки тому
Tears of Rage was originally recorded by Bob Dylan and The Band in 1967, although that recording wasn't released until 1975 when it appeared on the album called The Basement Tapes. However, a more well known version of the song was recorded by The Band in 1968 without Dylan and Richard Manuel sang the lead vocal. That recording became the opening track on The Band's highly influential debut alb...

Changing of the Guards - A Bob Dylan Song Performed by Johnny Cox

Changing of the Guards is the opening track on Bob Dylan's 1978 album Street Legal. The album is not nearly as well known as it's predecessors Desire and Blood on the Tracks, but I think it's a great album in its own right. And Changing of the Guards is a song that I've listened to a lot in my life. I think a lot of people view Street Legal as a transition point in Dylan's career. He'd just rel...

It wasn't released until eight years later when it was eventually included on a collection called The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3. That collection featured unreleased materi...
Fender vs Gibson - Guitars and Basses - In Just One Day, What Music Did they Inspire me to Create?

I payed under a grand on each one of them. Quite a lot less in most cases. 1995 Gibson Les Paul Stu...
Turn Your Pentatonic Guitar Licks into Jazz Lines by Adding Chromatic Approach Notes

My friend I have just seen a good video from the Gretsch channel about the history of their guitars and they feature a lot of people playing precisely this type of hollow body and using it for rock. They have quite a unique over driven sound that is quite desirable or at least the original ones did. Rockabilly too. This is like THE rockabilly guitar from what I can tell.

Fender sounds better to me with gain. Sire gets a bit muddy. Without direct comparison i don’t think most could tell to make a huge difference. Most people change pickups at some point anyway so get which speaks to you looks and feel. I went S7 fm because of neck, quality features and i think the transparent blue looks amazing personally. Also just starting out i don’t even know what my favorite tones or sounds are yet. Plus with amp, pedals and computer you can pretty much get sounds almost identical anyway. I will give another nod for fender because upgrading is way easier with drop in parts but only upgrade i think sire would ever need is pickups if the stick ones aren’t your flavor

I saw some really good reviews on the Ibanez RG470, and I might go for that one. I'm still a beginner, but have messed around with a few guitars for several years. This year I really want to get better and have a decent guitar. That's why I'm looking more to mid-range guitars. Some of my friends advise not to buy the RG470 they think it's too expensive. They say I should buy a cheaper one, for example GR121, and upgrade some parts like pickups and tuners. But if I look up different pickups they're expensive too and then I think might be better off with the RG470 that's €555 in Belgium. A reviewer advised me not to get a floating bridge and locking tremolo guitar since I'm a "beginner". But I thought maybe it's just a matter of learning how to tune those guitars? I have patience haha so that might help. Any thoughts? I also wonder how often you need to tune the springs? Is it like almost every week or either a few times a year? I would use the guitar almost every day.

I certainly think the Sire has a better spec. My only reservation is that with the Fender, you can change the electronics, pick guard colour, and the neck if you're into periodically changing the look and sound of the guitar. If Sire sell replacement necks and pick guards (and I don't know if they do or not), then for me, the Sire would be a hands down winner.

I bought the Sire S7 FM Blue V2 with coil splitting in the bridge and it's not a just for the money comparison, it actually plays better than the Fender. Frets are better finished, no sprouting and I get better tonal variety from the Sire pickups compared to the Fender's which are very narrow sounding. The locking tuners are also stepped so I don't have to bother with a crappy string tree resulting in much better tuning stability! I know fanboys will standby their selected favorite name brands but I KNOW I got a much better guitar for even less money! The big 3 have rested on their "Made in America" BS for way to long putting out mediocre quality guitars and just like the arrogance that ruined the auto industry, they're now losing ground daily!

NOT ANY MORE they have gone way up. You can still get Fernandes and Yamahas MIJ pretty cheap. Still worth the price of a vintage one…after you replace the trem, pots, and do some fret work your at the same price as a very good used one. You will also have a much better resale on a MIJ guitar.

I have a G2420T in gold dust. It’s a really great guitar. Regarding the tuning , if you replace the bridge for a roller bridge, & if the nut is cut at different angles, there’s no problems whatsoever with the tuning & the bigsby . I have some good quality guitars in my collection. A LES PAUL , & a FENDER STRAT . & a few other. I have to say , the 2420T is my pride and joy. Great review. Thanks.

Just purchased a G2420 in Walnut Stain which looks fantastic and also means no painted neck! (pet hate) Somewhat strangely it sounds great cleanish but even better with overdrive into my Marshall DSL20HR tube head and Line6 4 x 12" cabinet loaded with Celestion Vintage 30s. No sign of feedback with this setup but I did get feedback (controllable) when using my Laney VC15 tube combo. I know combo amps are more prone to feedback because of how close the amp is to the speaker. With the Marshall/quad setup the amp is a couple of metres away from the cabinet which may well explain the lack of feedback. The hollow body does produce a unique sort of tone, sort of hifi sounding.

Regards the two guitars I thought the S7 sounded a bit muddy as you rolled off the tone and was quite harsh compared to the Fender but that could be me. Anyway, most helpful as I was considering a Larry Carlton. Thanks.

Thank you for the review! To my ears the Sire sounds like it has a more buttery smoother tone that blends nicer in the mix, while the fender has a more sparkly one with a bit of attitude that gets a bit more in front. I prefer the sire's sound in the mix from what you've shown us. I feel like they complete 2 different roles. If you're a live guitarist that wants his guitar to cut through when he's soloing i'd say fender is the way to go, for me, i'm getting a sire for the studio sound. But then again, if you're a live guitarist the locking tuners are not a bad idea either so....... dunno, you can upgrade later if you feel the need for them i suppose.

haha. I am not sure "partially" is a thing...in science. Just being cheeky. Thanks for the video. I have a Gibson 335, 1961 dot neck, and I have a Grote 335 copy. I got the Grote for 129 bucks delivered from Amazon. I spent another 300 on pickups, locking tuners, bridge, tail, etc. AND it plays, sounds, feels as good as a 20 grand Gibson. AND, I can drive it like I stole it. That Sire is a perfect 335, the Epiphone is a perfect 335, these guitars are all better machines than we made 50 years ago. Coz it is old does not make it better and if you are a gigging musician, are you really going to take a 20k guitar to a gig in Bolton? The only downside is the name; Grote sounds like something you might do on a farm, "ee av gorra grote some sheep today." I will be sanding the decal off.
