Amazing Bear Cub Encounter on the Katmai Peninsula!!
We had and amazing bear cub encounter during a bear encounter tour on the Katmai Peninsula. This not so little guy had to be taught to respect human visitors for our safety, and even more so, for his own safety. It was a little tense, but Libby, our expert guide from Emerald Air Services, handled the encounter in an amazingly calm and professional manner. If you have a chance to take one of the tours to the peninsula, I highly recommend Emerald Air Services for the competence and experience of the guides and the pilots.

    I was up there in the same area about 3 years ago around Novemberish. I stayed over in some tiny home cabin like places in Leadville right by the main strip. To your point regarding your truck and the roads over in the marble crystal area, I remember seeing signs that advised beyond a certain point to only use a short and narrow wheel base 4wd. I had/have a 2 door jeep and it was difficult for me. I think I had seen private property signs in crystal and some of the old crystal cabins had residents there (I am sure seasonal only).

    Don't know much about machining, but common practice is to step the hole up. Use progresively larger bits. Each run is much easier and using a small bit to start helps accurately center the hole. Takes more time overall, but won't burn your drill and easier on the arm.

    • @ventureoutthere
      @ventureoutthere 5 місяців тому

      I tried that and unfortunately it didn’t work out well for me. The drill bits are a hardened material that is very brittle and if the bit grabs at all they snap. Torklift also recommends not doing this. Maybe if you had a large range of hardened bits and could do it on a bench drill press it would work out. That is my experience at least. I understand that they make a version that clamps into place now. You only have to drill a dimple and not a full hole.

I am very hard headed and determined on things, but, geez, that was grueling to watch all you went through! On another note, is your hard-side camper very top heavy? I know my 1989 Dodge Explorer Class B was with having the full fiberglass roof and no stabilization devices installed in the rear. Just turning from a traffic light from a dead stop I always felt I was going to turn over. Yikes! My future soon to be pop up truck camper will alleviate any top heavy sensations I’m sure. Pretty cool item that I didn’t know were available! Btw, where in Colorado do you live? I lived in Westminster (I-25 North & Hwy 36) just north of Denver after I got out of the Air Force in 1972. Ten years later after going into trucking Denver didn’t even look the same as when I was living there. Sad! We lived in Centennial, but are now on the road full time. I guess I am one of those transits that moved in and ruined it. 🙂 We moved to Colorado for work about about five years ago, although not from California. There are more and more people on this planet and population growth is a fact most everywhere. We have spent a lifetime in the outdoors and the parks and other places are all getting more crowded. I know my parents said the same thing back in the day when I was growing up. We work in Antarctica part of the year and have seen the major changes more people and climate change have brought. We all have to figure how to work through this together. Cheers!

I truly LOVED living in Colorado back in the 70s, but, after 38 years in trucking I’ve seen it become like most of the states in our country now…especially towns like Denver and where I lived in Westminster. I’ll go online occasionally to reminisce and I’m shocked, frankly, how it’s becoming and looking totally opposite of what I remember it was back then. Hardly recognizable to me anymore. My 2 cents: In my opinion the solution is not to go 'direct' on to the battery at all. On your ground side that large cable should be going to the block and or chassis at another point, so any ground side connections should be routed to that connection point and a distribution block used to allow multiple large connections. Same on the positive side, a distribution block with fuses should have all of your accessories going to it to provide individual appropriate fuses, all in a central location that then connects to your battery positive lead. Of course all of this must use amp appropriate cable and connection sizes. I get that using direct to the battery is common, and thus parts are made to assists that. But that really stems from the desire to have the connections visually simple to keep things easier to understand. It's not the best way, merely the simplest. Better load handling and organization of your accessory connections and fusing can be had by adding a sort of 'sub' fuse and distribution box (something like an electrical sub panel in house wiring) to handle the power requirements.

      @@ventureoutthere Did you go to Antelope Canyon? We camp all over the west, mostly Mountain biking and hiking, however we haven't been in this area yet.

      @@richberman8260 The only time I’ve been to Antelope Canyon was exploring back in the 80s. Back then you found it by word of mouth and there were no tours. We did some sketchy climbing to make it down.

      I know what you mean. I was raised by a single mother after my father moved away to remarry and join another family. I saw him on the occasional holiday and a couple of weeks each summer. I would say to join some positive groups and get out there for some inspiration if you can. You'll find your way and then become the one who inspires. Fair winds!

      Beautiful views, quiet and with no one else around traffic. It was the perfect place to enjoy our evenings! Next Came an unexpected campground and Monument Valley.

    Great video. The drone footage really gives you an idea of the surrounding area. It has been literally half a lifetime since I've travelled through the Grand Canyon and Sedona areas of Arizona. Thanks for letting me tag along and reminding me of some good times with good friends.

      We have been back a couple of times, but generally avoid the Phoenix area. I remember visiting for the first time, back when we were young, free and stupid. It is still an amazingly cool place.

    Enjoyed the video. I cant wait to be able to head to the mountains with my wife. We head up there every other year from Tx. Im retiring in a few years and have plans for a whole lot of overlanding Colorado and all the other western states

      Enjoy the trip. I am sure it is a nice break from the summer heat and humidity of Texas.
