I'm just gonna reuse an old cover I once made for another book, which didn't quite work out, giving it a second life. So, what I did was take the old cover apart, cut out the pieces, and then reassemble them using the same bookcloth. I can't wait to hear your thoug...

Welcome back to my channel! In today’s video, I’m excited to share my transformation of the Italian edition of Pachinko by Min Jin Lee from paperback to hardcover. This time, I experimented with a self-made book cloth for the cover. I did encounter a few challenges while applying the htv, and I’m about 90% sure it’s due to the fact that I used a very budget-friendly vinyl; the remaining 10% mig...

Welcome back to my channel! In today's video, I'll be transforming my Italian edition of Diana Wynne Jones' *Howl's Moving Castle* trilogy from paperback to hardcover, complete with decorated edges. This time, I tried covering the cover with linen canvas, and the designs were made using holographic iron-on vinyl. The way you do it seems so simple yet the result is so satisfying. It really inspires me to make my own covers for my favorite books, even though I’m just a beginner bookbinder. You’re awesome ⭐️
Where did you get this peel and stick canvas material? I've only seen it in leather.
I bought it on temu, but it can also be found on amazon. It's adhesive fabric for forniture repairs :)
@ thanks!
Fire😍🔥
What is the machine you are using? Is it like a printer or something?
Cricut Joy, it's a cutting machine :)
I like the design
Thanks!
❤Красота
I hadn’t actually seen the process for this technique for cover printing - very cool! And it’s a lovely design - I imagine the patience to do the level of detail is quite something. The broken sword on the book ribbon was a perfect touch. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching and for your feedback, I really appreciate it!
1:00 I want to make my own hardcover but this method scares me for many reasons, including, worrying my knife will cut through not only the endpapers but the text block when you trim like that!
If that scares you, then you could place the book on top of the endpapers, trace the edge with a pencil and cut them out before gluing them on :)
When measuring the boards for the front and back, do you add a few mm to all the sides or just the top, bottom and the non-spine side of the board?
I only add a few mm to the height of the boards :)
@BookishDIYChronicles Nothing added to the width then? Thanks for replying. I'm going to use your canvas method to do my first book cover. I'm hoping to assemble it all and then use spray paint to make the canvas/cover dark blue. Would that work do you think?
Correct! I think it will work, I've spray painted some covers myself, and they turned out well. Let me know how it goes and best of luck with your project! ☺️
Quick questions: where do you buy your leather effect cover material from? I like how it seems to be pre-glued and you peel the back off and just stick it down? Also, I have a certain book and want to remove the useless introduction to the edition, do you think at the stage of removing the paperback cover I could slice the pages out and then continue the process by strengthening the spine as usual? Or would cutting pages away damage the book block?
It's faux adhesive leather, which is very sticky but also practical. I bought it on Temu, but you can also find it on other sites, like Amazon. As for your second question, it is possible to remove some pages, but, as happened to me a few times, others might come loose as well. In those cases, I was able to reattach them with glue. Just be careful, and you’ll see that it will turn out great! :)
What material do you use to cover the existing book board? Is it fake leather or some other kind of material?
Fake leather :)
@ where did you get this kind that has adhesive on the back?
@@j05h94 Temu or Amazon, you can find it easily by typing "adhesive fake leather"
This is amazing! May I ask if the patterns listed on Endpaper were printed by yourself?😊
Thanks! In this video I hadn't added the endpapers yet, that was still the old paperback cover :)
@@BookishDIYChronicles Sorry, I just realized I made a mistake. This book is amazing! But what I want to ask is, did you print the pattern on the backing paper of Howl's Moving Castle? Thank you.😊😂
No problem 😂 thank you and yes, I printed it myself 😊
THANKS!I didn't expect that a photocopier can also print thick paper cards😂😊@@BookishDIYChronicles
@@elaine7698 I used 205gsm A4 paper, it’s not much thicker than regular paper, just slightly heavier than cardstock. Not a professional print, but it works pretty well 😄
Is that self adhesive book cloth something you bought or made yourself? Very interested in a video about that material!
I bought it :) maybe I can make a video where I show all the materials I use for book clothing, thanks for the suggestion!
Great tutorial! I'm getting ready to do my Fourth Wing set just like this but can't decide between permanent vinyl or htv.
Thanks! Now that I've become more familiar with the htv I prefer it only because to the touch it almost doesn't feel on the cover
I'm really new to making book covers so forgive me if this is a dumb question, but how does the vinyl hold up? Does it start peeling up after a while? Is there some sort of clear liquid sealer I could paint over the top of it all to make sure it stays?
Hi! Thank you for your questions! There are various types of vinyl, so it really depends on which one you choose. Generally, you don’t need glue, as most vinyls are either adhesive or can be applied with heat. In this video, I used permanent vinyl, which is highly resistant to both UV rays and water, and it's guaranteed to last at least 3 years. However, since it's applied to the cover of a book and kept indoors, I believe it may last even longer. Additionally, it's easy to apply with the help of transfer tape. Even better is the heat transfer vinyl (HTV), which adheres much more strongly to the cover. If you're curious to see how it works, I used it in my recent videos. You’ll need a mini press for this method, and the application is a bit more challenging, but if you're patient, the results are truly satisfying! I hope I was helpful, and if you have any other questions, let me know! 🥰
Hi, loved your video! Where did you get the blue tools to measure out the width of the fabric for the book? :)
Hi, thank you so much! 🥰 It's a bookbinding ruler kit by Craftelier that I bought on Amazon
Now I don’t know whether I want to watch Lord of the Rings or listen to the Last of the Mohicans soundtrack
You can do both 😂😂
How did you apply the text? Seems like you did not use an iron. Just curious since some people say using an iron on faux leather might melt it and wondering if you found another method.
I used permanent vinyl, it's adhesive and doesn't require heat to apply :)
What do call the gold material?
It's permanent vinyl :)
Woooow! Love it! Curious what type of leather did you use that has already glue on it? :) where do I buy it?
Thank you! It's a faux leather for repairs, like this one on Amazon a.co/d/8gfjgtK
@@BookishDIYChronicles Does it stick well or does it come off after some time? Would you need extra glue ?
@@sliceofchilliYes, it sticks well, maybe even too well..it might stick to your fingers, as it always happens to me. So, there's no need for extra glue. Besides that, it's practical to work with.
I enjoy watching your videos, so thank you for sharing. Curious what glue are you using?
@@dichav6114 thank you for your comment!! ❤️ It's vinyl glue for paper, wood and fabric

How did you design the cover art and whats the printer?
I find the vector images on Pinterest and upload them to Cricut Design Space, I use a Cricut Joy, then I edit the images there if necessary
@@BookishDIYChronicles thankyou it looks amazing 😁
Wow! Cricut should put you on their payroll! I think your work is beautiful.
@@kenthomas1109 thank you so much!!
What kind of vinyl do you use for the cover art? I thought you have to iron it!
Permanent vinyl, no iron needed 😄
Beautiful. Do u mind sharing what paint you use for the edges. Thankyou
Thank you! 🥰 I use acrylic paints and in this case I also use a gold pigment powder 😊
L I K E 👍👍👍👍👍😻🙀😻🙀😻💯💢💯❣💯💢💯
Wow, this looks amazing 🤩. I have never seen something like that before (selfmade bookclothes). Thanks for sharing 🙋🏼♀️
Thank you! 🥰
Hi! I´m wondering what transfer vynil works the best for a book cover, This one or the one that sticks with heat? Thank you!! Also, in your expirience is it imposible to have a very compliex design such as one of those vintage illustrations?
Hi! 🥰 In my short experience, both work well, but HTV feels more uniform to the touch compared to permanent vinyl. With permanent vinyl, some small parts can sometimes peel off or attract dust, but so far, I haven't encountered that issue with HTV. That said, permanent vinyl is easier to apply than HTV; you just need to get used to it. I recommend trying both to see which one you prefer. As for your second question, it's not impossible. I’ve seen many bookbinders far more skilled than I am use incredibly intricate designs. To achieve a more precise cut and cleaner weeding, it may be helpful to set the blade pressure to "more"
@@BookishDIYChronicles thank you so much for answering!! God bless you 🤍
Bless you too! You're very welcome ❤️
Nice
Thanks 😄
Oh i wanted to see something like this
❤
Thanks for the guide. I'm on to my second fanfic book bind now. I think I'll do a quarto bind after.
I'm glad it has been helpful 😊
This is awesome!
Thanks! 🥰
You deserve more like for this master piece ❤ I subscribed 😊
You are very kind 🥺🥰 thank you so much!! ❤️
This is beautiful! Is this permanent vinyl you are using for the cover? So far I have tried HTV for my projects and had so many problems with ironing on the vinyl without damaging it and getting it to adhere to the book cloth. Would you recommend using your approach for book linen?
Yes, this is permanent vinyl. I've recently started using iron-on vinyl and encountered the same challenges you faced, even having to redo one cover from scratch. However, once you master the application process, I personally prefer the iron-on because it feels much more uniform to the touch compared to the permanent vinyl. Also, some small parts can sometimes peel off or attract dust, but I haven't encountered that issue with iron-on vinyl, at least based on my experience so far. Despite this, I suggest you to try it yourself; you might find that you prefer it and feel more satisfied with your results. I'm sorry for this extra long answer 😅I hope I was still helpful to you. Best of luck with your bookish projects! 🥰
@@BookishDIYChronicles Not at all! I appreciate your fast response and advice. It might also be a problem of the HTV quality. So far I have tried some one the cheaper side for practise. I will try some different brands. Maybe it will work out better. Wish you also all the best! ❤
where do you purchase the sticky book cloth?
I bought it on temu, it's like a roll of adhesive fabric for repairing furniture. I think you can found them also on Amazon :)
Ita? Perché quella è la copia italiana di Dune
@@Luca_Canc Sì :)
Thanks that was very helpful. Also do you only rebind certain sized books since the Joy is on the smaller size to cut out the designs?
It would be easier but apparently I like to complicate my life with big books and putting design pieces together. 😅 If I could go back I wouldn't buy the Joy just for this reason
@@BookishDIYChronicles What kind of vinyl is used for the book edges stencil?
I use cricut smart stencil or removable vinyl 😊
The black cover is paper or leather? What is the material used?
Adhesive leather :)
Were do you find the cover borders designs or do you make it yourself.
I found them on pinterest :)
@@BookishDIYChronicles thanks.I just got into bookbinding Fanfictions and I have my old Circuit Joy from a few years ago.
@@BookishDIYChronicles Maybe you can do a tutorial of how you pick your covers designs and make it on the Joy soon.
@@MasterTia221b yes I can do it in the next few days :)
Hello, Is that leather you're using for the cover? What is that? Please and thank you!
@@sicurr1 Hello! It's adhesive leather. It's usually used for furniture repairs but I use it to bind books 😄
This is great! Loved watching. Question - what's the point of putting the small ribbon-like clothes at the top and bottom of the spine? I've seen them before but wondering why you do this here? 😊
Thank you so much! The headbands on the spine give more support to the structure of the books and are also decorative 😊
😢Шибко быстрая съемка
Sorry 😅
Such an awesome result! I wouldn't have thought that trick on the text block edge would work!
Thank you! 😊
Hi! I've started a similar project, (trying to make a book makeover) but I'm uncertain which type of silver foil is best with the Cricut joy. Could you give me any recommendation of a brand or place where I can find what I need? Thank you in advance!❤
Hi 😊 if you mean transfer foil I've only tried it a few times, so I'm not an expert. However, you can find it on amazon. Cricut itself produces it, or this is the one that I have: We R Memory Keepers 0633356606680 Foil Quill-4 x 6 Inch Seat-Silver Swan (30 Piece), M a.co/d/g8i5fuG Hope it helps you ❤️
@@BookishDIYChronicles Thank you so much!!
Scusa ma se l'edizione è italiana perché il titolo è in inglese? Comunque la copertina è bella.
