I like the way you managed to match your books to the prompts! Throughout this year I read an average of 39% nonfiction (61% fiction) according to Storygraph and I don’t think I will change my habits for Nonfiction November… but I love hearing about what nonfiction titles other people are reading for pleasure.

Quiet was a book that was so validating and empowering ♥️ I like your interpretations of the prompts! Henrietta is a great book. It was earth shattering for me 15 years (?) ago. The ‘powers-that-be’ secrets and lies and underhandedness filled me with sorrow.

I’m happy to hear you are reading Tomb of Sand: I loved it! Split Tooth and Spilexm are both excellent choices for the Read Across Canada challenge. I listened to them in audio as well as reading print editions-in any format they are fabulous.

(Thank you for saying that about Eleanor Catton, I get so annoyed that she gets nominated for all the Canadian awards!) Such an interesting challenge! One of my fave reads: Adrift by Brideau who is a BC author and the book is set in BC, if you need another BC option (it fits your mystery/thriller genre category too). It's really smart climate fiction with a strong mystery at the core. It just won the Evergreen Award, is a finalist for some mystery/crime awards too. I loved it and wish more people were talking about it! :)

What a great challenge! I re as Five Little Indians which was really good. A book that I saw heavily advertised by my library is Hotline by Dimitri Nasrallah, I haven’t read it myself but I heard good reviews! It takes place in MTL in the 80s

I asked my Canadian friend about writers from PEI, and she suggested Valerie Compton (Tide Road). I guess she now lives elsewhere, but she was born and grew up on PEI.

Thank you so much for doing this! Really enjoyed hearing about your journey with Reading Across Canada. You also have the added challenge of being out of the country and a more limited access to Can Lit. Nunavut is tricky because the population is small and therefore the population of writers is even smaller. Tanya Tagaq and Sheila Watt-Cloutier are two that I have read from there. For PEI, there is the PEI book award which has Nonfiction, Fiction, Poetry and Children's books. That might help introduce you to more authors besides LM Montgomery. Thanks again for taking on the challenge and I look forward to seeing what else you read this year. 😊💙

I'm going to do this challenge for next year and aim to read an author from each province and territory. I'm Japanese Canadian from (London) Ontario and currently live in Halifax. Since I'm travelling in Ontario to visit family at the moment, I don't have my TBR with me, but I am ALSO struggling to find a writer from Nunavut. Also, I LOVED "Fayne" and almost everything Ann-Marie MacDonald has written :) I have a few recommendations. I adore this Shortlist. I’ve read James, The Safe Keep, Held, and Orbital (enjoyed them all). I still need to read Creation Lake and Stone Yard Devotional. I do plan to read the rest of the Long List (I’ve also read Headshot, and it’s by far my least favorite-so repetitive).

I am about a third into The Safekeep and it’s good so far. Stoneyard Devotional is a good book but wacky in places. So lovely to see your video appear❤Happy reading Camila 😊

Headshot is a test of perseverance! I loved Held. It's the first book I read and I just happened to be in the right headspace for it. I managed to find a used copy of Fugitive Pieces and I'm looking forward to reading it. And I thought James was interesting. I just have to find a copy of Orbital to read, and I own Creation Lake but haven't read it yet, though it'll be my next read after Wandering Stars. The other 2 books on the shortlist are my lowest rated books I've read in years 😂 but there's not many people who feel the same way. But that's ok!

They shortlisted all five books I have read! (And one that I was planning on skipping). I'm very happy with four of them, but didn't get on with Held at all, and I'm a bit meh that I'll have to read Creation Lake now. 😂 I recommend Stone Yard Devotional. I think you'd like that. And it seems universally appreciated. Held is a marmite book, you'll either commune with it on a spiritual level or you'll think it's a pompous, disjointed snooze fest. The Safekeep is either a book where you are in suspense wondering what is going on, and then you are blown away by the reveal in part 3 (most British readers), or you see what's going on from the first chapter but you're still enjoying the story (most readers from continental Europe). The ending is divisive, but personally I liked it.

Eve was great, I can understand and agree the criticism for pageboy, although I enjoyed a bit more than you I think. And I hated an American marriage. I was just waiting for Celeste to stand up for herself, but she was always so passive with her back and forth… not my thing at all

I just finished Headshot and it wasn't my favorite writing style. I am excited to read a couple more from the Booker Prize, though.

I hope you have a better time with birnam wood this time, I enjoyed it but it's not my usual style, I like have characters to root for and this felt more plot based. James is brilliant.

Thanks, Camila🌷I finished Orbital yesterday and can warmly recommend it for a quiet, meditative read full of beautiful descriptions of the earth seen from outer space. I found some of the reflections on humankind from the point of view of the six astronauts illuminating.

Code dependent is so much more than what I expected. I have low key decided to read the longlist of the womens prize for non fiction because all I have read from that list has been excellent, even the ones I was not so sure I was interested

Liatened to Orbital and it was excellent on audio. Very thoughtful read--in that it will get you thinking. Liked Birham Wood again on audio but it does take awhile to get going. Thunderclap is a favorite. Loved it in print. Happy Reading

I read the secret history last month and thought it was excellent. I was relieved it lived up to expectations!

I'm hoping to read The Secret History this year too. But it definitely won't be this month 😅 Between the Booker, my ridiculous amount of library books, and my ongoing chunksters for Big Book Summer, I'm swamped. Code Dependent is so good! One of my top non-fiction reads, for sure. Thunderclap was good too, and very pretty, 😄 but not as riveting as Code Dependent. Birnam Wood didn't work for me at all, but I'm definitely in the minority there. James is really good though.

I highly recommended The Coast Road by Alan Murrin I stayed up to 3am to finish it as I couldn’t put it down.

I have really enjoyed watching all of these Booker reaction videos all across BookTube. Thank you for jumping in! I'm starting with "James"and "The Safekeep" and see what comes after that.

lovely reaction camila! i've read 6 of these so far - james and the safekeep are by far my favourites, and i was a bit let down by my friends and this strange eventful history. held and orbital were pretty good! i'm intrigued by headshot, enlightenment, and wandering stars, but i hope to get round to all thirteen of them sooner or later. can't wait to see what you think of the ones on your tbr if you do end up reading them!

I really liked James! It’s the bones of Huckleberry but so fresh and funny and poignant. Completely unexpected take on slavery and one that is needed!
