Let's have an adventure! Come along as I go fishing, boating, traveling, exploring, and more! I currently live by the seacoast in New England (where I grew up), but I've lived all over the US, have traveled to over 30 countries, and I used to be an Alaskan fly-fishing guide. I'm also an author of two fiction novels: "Taking on Water" and "Redemption Grove." Both these novels are filled with fishing and the outdoors. I love to spend my time outside--especially on the water. So, what are you waiting for? Subscribe to follow along and let's go on an adventure!

GoPro Fishing 100 Feet Down Under the Water! | The Isles of Shoals in Maine and New Hampshire |
I attached my GoPro to a fishing rod and dropped it down underwater to depths over 100 feet deep. I took my jetski out to The Isles of Shoals in Maine and New Hampshire and risked losing my GoPro so that I could see what was underwater. I did two drops and saw loads of fish, a lobster, a Jonah Crab, cod, cunner, clams, sea urchins, and starfish. This was surprisingly successful, and it makes me want to explore more deep down under the water. The visibility was decent for around here, and the colors at these depths are not as vibrant because of the lack of light, but I think this GoPro fishing adventure was success!
Let me know in the comments if I missed something down there.

Was this that juvenile humpback whale that jumped on the fishing boat? Possibly. I spent the day on my jetski and caught my first saltwater fish! Then, out of nowhere, a juvenile humpback whale showed up and even jumped in front of Whaleback Lighthouse in Kittery, Maine. The humpback whales have been coming into Portsmouth Harbor to hunt pogies. I put my GoPro underwater and filmed a school of ...

Very cool. The shoals are where I do a fair amount of bait fishing. and you can definitely run across some good-sized cod just East of the white Island area where it drops off very quickly. Good stuff for your first try.
@bryanmarshall6878 Hey, thanks! Yeah, it's a solid bait spot. And the footage was a better result than I thought it would be. The lighting was better than I figured, too. That being said, it really makes me want to dive out there and/or use an underwater drone. Ideas are perculating for next year. haha
@seasidenomad diving out there would be pretty cool. And if you are diver you probably already know, but there can be a substantial current difference between the east and west sides out there. Enjoy and stay safe!
@bryanmarshall6878 Thanks, yes, the currents out there can be no joke for sure, I was actually talking to a diver out there about it this summer. One day. Haha
That was fun, thanks! Looking forward to more.
@maritimeus I have dreams of an underwater drone. 😁 They have come down a lot in price in recent years. Thinking it might be a good investment for future content.
So cute!!!

What size boat do you have?
@nathanielbeaulieu6045 I only have a jetski, but I have some friends and family with boats. This one is around 30 feet, I believe.
@@seasidenomad I have a 16 foot aluminum v hull. Curious how it would handle around the coast.
@nathanielbeaulieu6045 I had a 17-foot V hull center console that I used to use in the bay, river, and on flat days, just off the coast. It can be done, but it's best on days when the wind and waves are calm, in my opinion.
@@seasidenomad that's good to know. Alot for a thread on UA-cam, but have you had any luck with winter flounder in bays?
@nathanielbeaulieu6045 It's a good question. Back in my parents' day, you could just drop a sandworm down on a flounder hook and pull up a flounder no problem. Now, it appears that they've moved or just aren't coming back in the numbers they used to. I have caught them around the mouth of rivers when the tide is incoming. I caught one winter flounder at the mouth of the Piscataqua on a diamond jig this year in one of my recent episodes. They seem to like hanging around sandy patches near rocks or kelp. I'd like to dedicate a day next summer to just trying to catch flounder with jigs, clams, or sandworms.

Looks like a beautiful place! Ever heard of tuna being caught around these islands? Seems like a good place to target them with a small boat
@eloicplante5087 Yup! Went deep sea fishing the other weekend, and there were loads of boats fishing for tuna within view of the shoals. I didn't see them catch any, but it's been done.

One of NH’s only 2 lighthouses
@maritimeus Oh wow! I was today years old when I realized that Whaleback was part of Newcastle. Feels like it should be Kittery, but Google feels otherwise. I learned something new today!
Now you got me scratching my head, lol. I always thought whaleback was in Maine’s waters. NH has Isles of Shoals light and Fort Constitution. Maybe I’m today years old for learning this too?! Wild. I don’t know.
@maritimeus Oh yeah. I was literally by that one the other day on the ski. So, there are now three NH saltwater lighthouses that we know of until another one emerges from the sea. There is that derelict one in Rye, but I don't think that counts. Maybe "active" or "working" lighthouse should be caviat.
@maritimeus Did some more research, and now I think that the Google map/address is wrong. Found some news articles citing it as Kittery. This is a rabbithole for sure. I should paddle over there and knock on the door to ask somebody. Haha
Hahaha, let me know when you head over! I want to look inside 😂

Hey where do you remember where you dropped your kayaks in at?
@christiancanales7 We rented from this company and they have a dock with their kayaks a block over from their shop on the harborside. Solid rates and nice people back when we did it: www.clearwaterpaddleboardco.com/
Hey Dave - I have a dilemma...do you have any suggestions on where I can buy lobster trap bait? I can't catch mackerel and pollock fast enough for my 5 recreational traps. I loaded up on pogies earlier this season in Portsmouth harbor, but those are depleted. I have pig hide, but I'd love to through in a few fish in each of the 5 bait bags. Any ideas where I can occasionally buy a 5 gallon bucket of mackerel/whatever? I checked with Brewsters in Portsmouth and they want like a $1 per mackerel, lol. Ideally, I'd find a commercial lobster boat and I can give him a $20 bill to fill up a bucket. I'm interested to know what you and your parents do to get their bait. Do you guys catch it all or buy? Thanks!
Hey, I asked and he goes through a buddy that only has a small amount for a few people, so no go there, but he said to call your local fish market or meat dept as they often resell buckets of scraps and that's basically what he uses when he can't catch enough macks or pogies. I remember he used to use those hides when bait was scarce and the smell off those is nose hair curling. Haha But they're durable, which is key. Otherwise, in a pinch Kittery Trading Post has a freezer of bait and there's another bait supplier on the nh seacoast that supplies gas stations, but again that's a smaller amount for a higher price than you probably want to pay. My dad also has an extra freezer that he stocks up with frozen bait over the winter to cover baiting in the spring. Hope that helps!
Really great advice! Thanks Dave 👍
That is absolutely STUNNING I love opportunities to get out and hike on a small trail! Good to see people are more brave and finding beautiful more advanced spots. Amazing camera by the way!🎉

Given the size of this Eagle I bet he could do it!!!😊
For fishing lobsters do you have restrictions like size or reproduction when they have eggs?
@EM.1 Yes, there is a size (slot limit) to what you can keep (depends on the particular area). You can just look up lobster measuring guage and see what the tool looks like. You can't keep one with eggs. You can't keep a notched lobster. And if it's a female with eggs, you should notch it. Thanks for the question!
Another successful catch! 💯💯💯🦀

Awesome video! That seadoo looks fun
@@maritimeus Yeah, man. It really is. Took it out to Boon Island the other day. It loves the deep blue.
I would love to catch some winter flounder. I don’t hang around river/creek flats to catch them though. I should try !
@@maritimeus Caught him on a 4 oz diamond jig off New Castle. I need to get a day where I can try to target them with clams or sea worms. They taste great.
@@seasidenomad btw, I was 3-4 miles out past Isles of Shoals today on my way out to Old Scantum. At that spot, I saw a great white shark and got within 10 feet when it was cruising at the surface. Then it breached 3 times. Flew right out of the water. Got some crazy pictures. Just like shark week on discovery channel.
@maritimeus Dang! Heard it was flat today, would have been a great day to go wide. Airborne great whites are epic. Once you get past the shoals, it gets sharky. A chunk of mackerel or pogie, and they come calling. I'm envious of the adventure!
I used to catch Blackfish in my lobster pots. They were great!
Beautiful drone footage. My wife and I are planning on being in Rye Beach and Kennebunkport in September. We'll definitely look into getting into a boat to check out one or both of these lighthouses. Looks like Boon Island could be almost underwater at high tide. Just a low pile of granite rocks. Very little elevation there for sure.
Scary to imagine being out on that island in a storm. The highest point is only 14 feet above sea level.
@DrEMichaelJones It's kind of a scary place in general. No real solid access, hundreds of, sometimes, ornery seals, and a history of cannibalism. Pretty terrifying if you think about it all. Haha
Awesome! What they go for?
@jtcosimmonsma7071 2024 new ones go for 15k. This was last year's model, so it was a few grand less, thankfully. And I got them to take a bit off the trailer. Not a cheap purchase, but I've been wanting one for like 4 years. Finally got it done.
Whats the out the door price for the trailer and scout? Looking at a 2023 now just want to see if it's priced comparable
@seasidenomad what was the price out the door for trailer and 2023 scout?
@george62284 For me, I got a promotion where you could choose 1k off the sticker price and get an extra year of warranty with going financing rates, or I could choose to get low financing (offset by Sea Doo) with the basic 1 year warranty. I went with the low financing. So jet ski was 13800, and the trailer was 1400. So 15200 with low financing, but it could have been 14200, but without the better financing deal. Hope that helps ya!
@@seasidenomad thx yea that's about what the last 2023 is going for where I'm from think the lowest rate is 1.99 if I did 36 months 60 is like 3.99
What size traps do you and your parents have? I already have a few 48” traps for my recreational Maine license, but I was thinking of picking up another 2 from NEMI. Maybe 30” or 36” traps, but I’m not sure about the best size. My 48” traps are so heavy lol.
They use 36in traps and tie them together to make 2 trap trawls. They do have a davot with a pulley that really helps when they hand pull the rope. The pulley might cut the weight in half with the mechanical advantage. I see people pulling them up without a pulley, and I don't envy the sore muscles and hands. 😅
Also, they lobster in NH, so I don't know any of the Maine rules and regs FYI.
Gotcha. Thanks for the quick reply. I might try a couple of extra traps like those 36” ones. In Maine, pulleys are allowed, but I’m not sure how I’d mount one on my gunwale. BTW, cool new jet ski!
Fun
I think you’re right. Juvenile cunner. Looks like a wrasse
Yeah, it is wrasse-ey. Might have to add it to the other new species in the Gulf of Maine. 😂
