I just discovered this album a few years ago, I had only heard Phasors On Stun, but not the rest of the album. Amazing! I play it all the time now. RIP Nash the Slash
Never heard of these. I liked Nash when i was a kid (punk period) and i was looking up some old bands like caberet voltaire, led me to Nash, then here. Well, i can say that these were fu**ing awesome together. So raw and so much talent. We've had some fantastic decades for music. Alas, the wells are almost dry now. Time machine wanted. Any price paid!
The first time I saw Nash the slash was with the bandages. I thought he was a burn victim who thought it better to not show his face because of how so many would react to it. Of course I was wrong. I miss that man!
This segment of the Nightmusic tv show had a huge impact on the mind of a 13yr old kid, totally in awe of this band. It has had a lasting effect on me, and as I type this as that kid at 58 yrs, I still hold it dear to my favourite musical experiences. Nash the Slash is a true original, and I love the combination of sound and visuals that were part of his concerts. Cameron Hawkins keyboard playing is something I still study, loving those retro synth sounds. Thanks for posting this. Man, this is good stuff.
This seems to be the best surviving recording of Black Noise, better even than the one on Lost In Space. I first saw FM at York University before the FM name (as far as I know); they were performing as "Nash the Slash and Cameron Hawkins". It was truly life-changing... some of the best and most powerful music I ever heard. I didn't count but have probably heard them perform live 20 or 30 times... they were that good. I would still argue even today that the "Elka string synth running through the MiniMoog external input" sequence starting at 6:25 counts as the greatest synthesizer patch of all time. There was a performance we recorded off-the-air which I still think of as the definitive FM sound (CHUM-FM Night at 11 ?) that was arguably better than any surviving recordings I have heard, but that recording died after a few generations and maybe a dozen copies and we were never able to find anything like a master tape. The other song that hardly ever got recorded as well as a live performance was One O'Clock Tomorrow. In the live performances Jeff would double-track the mandolin solo live with an echoplex... other than the Night at 11 broadcast and the Lost in Space CD I don't think that was ever captured in a recording.
I think I like this version better than the album version. Shorter intro, tension-building break between the second chorus and the violin/viola solo, extended outro, minimalist drum sequence underpinning the madness...
No. It is Nash the Slash. He was already a solo artist and he and Cameron Hawkins formed FM. This predates their first album, Black Noise which was recorded after drummer Martin Deller joined the group. Nash went back to his solo career shortly after that and Ben Mink stepped in to replace him in FM.
Awesome! We used to see him at the Roxy Theatre on Danforth Ave in Toronto. We kids used to go to the late Saturday night movies- Ramones Rock n Roll High School / The Who- The Kids Are All Right.....he lived upstairs....we kids were in AWE of this guy. Once we saw him grabbing munchies at the snack bar.....r.i.p nash
Remember first watching this on Ontario Canada's TVO (TV Ontario) channel from Toronto, Ontario. Canada. This was our first exposure to FM who at the time only had Jeff Plewman later known as Nash The Slash (Not yet in the bandages and hat we know him for) playing the electric mandolin. He also played the electric violin and keyboards as well. And Cameron Hawkins playing the main keyboard. Martin Deller was later to join the group known as FM.
I in fact just remember now the show was called "Night Music" that featured various musical artists and they showed the show on either Friday or Saturday nights if I recall correctly. Nash The Slash R.I.P. Sad to hear of his passing. Saw Nash a number of times when he was in Ottawa to do some concerts in the past. Got to meet him personally and got his autograph at the time. Nice straightforward person.
I was looking over the tapes of my Scarborough Cable show from 1987. I found among a whole lot of great interviews, in our "Pro Tip" segment, Nash the Slash giving advice to the next generation of musicians. Has me looking for my FM album again. Thanks for this posting. Great to be reminded of this great music.
I used to play these guys on the radio regularly during my college radio days (80s). Never thought I'd have q chance to see any of their performances - thanks so much for making this possible. :) Very sad to hear that Nash the Slash has passed away - R.I.P. :( I have his solo LP "And You Thought You Were Normal"... gonna have to dust it off and give it another listen.
Ooh he died and I didn't knew !!! :( ... sorry he was A genus ... after that interview with Iggy pop he decided to produce an album in 1981 named and you thought you were normal ..... R.I.P
Imagine these guys added a drummer!
The 'other' Geddy Lee!
Nash and Gary Numan made a great pairing
FM opened up for Aerosmith in 1976 Philadelphia Spectrum. They were unforgettable.
What was the tavenr on Weston Road, Toronto where nash plyed lots ? ... since demolished...
Wow this rare. Nash before the bandages
Really like the janky 1980s aesthetic of these videos. Nash was way ahead of his time.
Thanks for posing this gem. Only wish I'd paid more attention to the Toronto music scene when I lived there back in the day.
Black Noise...
Me acuerdo que fue un regalo un casette FM por un lado y Camel Nude por el otro 87
Oh, man....thanks for posting! Rare early-Slash footage.

The Vanderhorst painting makes this even more unsettling! Just incredible.
Seen FM at Frankie n Jonny's bar in Calgary, fantastic show. Seen Nash solo at Sait.

Still considered a classic and memorable combo and collection of spacial reference!
First time I’ve seen his face !
No drummer?

Had this on 8-tack, album, cassette, CD and digital download........still one of my favs
How did Nash the slash die? And I just found out about these guys. I bought a vinyl at a flee market turned it and was blown away!!
heart attack at home
This is so freaking good... all these years later! Saw it when I was 13, and still am moved by it at 58!

Damn.....Dec. 2020.....This IS good for the soul.
Thanks for posting. Was a fan of nash and FM since I was 9 yrs old

Thanks. That was an interesting read. Lost in Space was an exciting discovery for me a few years ago. Now I can't wait for the documentary.
UGH! LOVE me some Nash! He's damned adorable and his electric violin cannot be beaten.
Great track !!!! Could be a Pink Floyd 'Animals'-song.
Such wonderful musicians. Such wonderful memories. Thank you, FM!

Oh my fucking stars FM was such a good band.Saw them at my High School.I was soooo stoned and it was sooò loud💋❤
is this ben mink from the album city of fear ?

It's awesome to see that there are only 3 negative comments. Still, I'm very curious about why. I don't see someone coming to this song by chance.
Anyone else hear children of the night in this?
Yes! It's roughly the same BPM and the same key.
Not only do I agree with Zep77 I never liked anything about gnr- axel always was nothing but an asshole. Even worse than lars ulrich. My opinion.

I only wish there was a clip of Nash without the shades, just to know his face. But I guess it would kill the magic.
Awesome!!!!!!!!! I can't think of anything else to say.
