    Thank you. You explanation about why keys get stuck because of the cracked stems helped me understand why my C128 had a sticky F1 key. I had been trying to find a replacement key cap. When I went to inspect it, sure enough I could see a tiny crack in the stem. I’m going to try 3D printing the plunger.

    I remember when these first came out. I already had a C64, an Amiga 1000, and a C128 with 1571 drive. I was like geez, Commodore!!!! Anyway I still wanted one but couldnt justify the expense. I'm actively searching for one but again I still cannot justify the price. I got close...very close a few times to scoring one,.

    One of the best uses of the CMD HD is its ability to backup the entire contents of a RAMLink to a so-called "Foreign Partition"... so just in case your RAMLink ever loses its power and, therefore, its content, you *can* restore it from the HD... depending on how often you make a backup.

  • @LordHasenpfeffer

    I still have the HD-100 I bought new in the mid/late-1990s. It still works well too (for now). Regardless, I seriously want this upgrade done for it but I'm not the one to do the hardware parts. Wondering to whom, to where and how best to send it.

      You may want to try one of the Commodore forums out there and find someone in your area that has a good reputation with repairs. This would not be a costly retrofit in terms of labor and I believe the zuluSCSI board was around $50usd for the unassembled version or around $80usd assembled

    Good refurb however I would suggest n the future taking the PTT mechanism out of the neck and burnish the connections as they oxidize over time. I have done a few of these in the past. Sei chrome does an amazing job on the chrome. I'm about to wrap a base with vinyl car wrap. we will see how it turns out.

    One thing I miss when using those solid state replacements is the actual noise from the hard drive. Btw, it is not Jim Brain's ROM, that version was released by CMD. Jim just has the right to sell them. EDIT: If you press "-" at the size selection you it will wrap around and you will get the maximum amount of blocks.

    I like seeing such upgrades to machines. But it is always unsatisfactory, when there isn't any demo in the end of the same video that shows hot it actually performs. Telling how sturdy it feels is is very subjective not an actual result at the end of the day. Most people promise cutting demos in later videos and oftentimes by then they realize it not to perform as expected and then the promised demo never comes because the project is abandoned. Looks like that promised demo never showed up here either.

  • @michaelcloutier2225
    @michaelcloutier2225 3 місяці тому

    You had all the chips out so you should have tested ALL OF THEM first.

    • @revivingretro
      @revivingretro 3 місяці тому

      I understand where you're coming from, but I try not to do this on videos I make because I like to follow a sequence and show the different screen results for each bad chip along the way. If I wasn't doing a video, these repairs would take me less than half the time since I would just use my oscilloscope - that wouldn't be any fun. :)

    • @revivingretro
      @revivingretro 3 місяці тому

      Not much to the controller - just 4 screws on the back (www.theoldrobots.com/zpcbd2.html) - the joystick mechanism is encapsulated in a small sealed box though. You could always try cracking it open and possibly gluing it back together once you fix the internal issue. These controllers pop up on Ebay periodically. You could also try a little electronic cleaner to see if you can work it loose.
