My birding activities have been somewhat hampered this year because I was diagnosed with colon cancer and had to have surgery. (It was successful and I do not need any follow-up treatment) This has meant that a lot of my photography was very close to home. I have tried to develop my skills in capturing action shots. I hope you enjoy the results.

Noisy Miners Bathtime

Noisy Miners come to the birdbath in our backyard several times a day. They are common, noisy, and aggressive, but provide endless entertainment and photographic practice for me. Silver Gulls

I spent a morning watching and photographing Silver Gulls on the Eraring Powerstation Outlet Channel. They are always good practice for getting "Birds in Flight" photographs. I use a high shutter speed 1/2500, and I photograph at about 10 frames per second. My aim is to catch the birds doing something interesting.

November has been a hard month for birding as I have recovered from back surgery and attended all the end-of-year activities,. But all is not lost. I had some great encounters with a family of four Powerful Owls and captured a Willie Wagtail sequence that was quite elegant. A family of Varied Sittellas also put on a courtship display that resulted in some of my best pictures ever of the species.

I had intended adding a commentary track to this slideshow, but October was a bit truncated for me. I had back surgery and for a while was restricted to home. However, there are some nice photos of Scarlet Honeyeaters, and a special encounter with an Australian Owlet Nightjar to compensate.

This month shows not only birds photographed near my home in the Lake Macquarie area but also the birds encountered on a trip through the Warrumbunges, Lightning Ridge, Burren Junction, and Yarrie Lake areas of NSW. I did not get out as often as I would have liked this month but I did capture some interesting sequences. Look for the Noisy Miner group courtship photos, the Striated Heron in flight, and the Northern Mallards chasing one another.
July 2023 Birds

It is winter and the number of species around is still small. However, there are a couple of interesting events this month. Watch out for the Mistletoebird eating Privet berries. Mistletoe birds rarely turn up on my patch. There are still some Regent Honeyeaters in the area too. Enjoy the slideshow. There is no sound so you can choose your ownmusic to go with it.

June has resulted in fewer bird photos because (1) it is winter and (2) I've been busy. There have been a couple of standout episodes though. Several unbanded Regent Honeyeaters have appeared quite close to home and they are always worth photographing. I have also captured some nice White-faced Heron in-flight photos.

May has been a bit of a lean month for birds. Some of the birds that usually appear in May have been rather hard to find this year. So I have concentrated on getting interesting photos of the birds that are still here. Have a look at the Silver Gull sequence and the interaction between the Australian Raven and White-bellies Sea-eagle for instance

I hope you enjoy this month's offering. The month of April has been an interesting one. I was fortunate enough to capture some photos of the endangered Regent Honeyeater at Pelaw Main. Mr Maurice, thanks for sharing your gift of birds, I noticed the birds in Australia are tamed ( also kangaroos) when I visited Sydney ,was waiting for a bus outside Sydney Adventist Hospital, here we are under a tree taking pictures of several birds and they don’t fly away in spite of our commotions! Thank you for your kind words. I have thought about adding music to it, but run into copyright issues that are difficult to resolve without costing me money. Typically, I suggest that folk play their own music while watching it. I often watch my bird shows to the accompaniment of Vivaldi's Four Seasons.
